Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosing oral herpes

valtrex

Avatar m tn And how long should the oral outbreak last if Valtrex is taken immediately upon noticing the first signs of the outbreak?
Avatar m tn The first issue is to be certain your recurrent oral sores really are herpes. Such frequent outbreaks are rare, even without valacyclovir, and I suspect something else is going on. You should see a doctor, preferably one experienced in herpes, such as a dermatologist. Set it up so you can be seen promptly (within a day or two) when the next oubreak starts so you can be examined and have an HSV PCR test from the outbreak (or culture, but PCR is preferred).
55646 tn?1263660809 First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar f tn The best is to say about half the adult US population has HSV-1. We get it as a child from that kiss from auntie or the boy/girl in kinder we kissed. It isn't that much of a big deal. But as we age the amount goes up. Being that its common its best to get him checked. Make it a STD date. Anyone who is sexually active should have testing done around once a year. Viral shedding to what I know isn't showing decreasing. You will have just about the same amount.
Avatar m tn I was swabbed and all tests came back negative however I did test positive for hsv 1 via blood work- my question is if this were an oral herpes outbreak genitally would being on valtrex every day for 4 months have made these symptoms subside ??? Is the pain people talk about with a herpes outbreak the actual open sores that are painful or is it a generalized pain ? The pain I am experiencing is like someone has the tip of my penis in a vice...
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar n tn m now on valtrex and ultram and have to wait about another 8 days for the herpes cotton swab test to come back (he said the blood test would show positive in many people, and that the cotton swab test was more accurate for actual genital herpes). i've been on both the valtrex and ultram for 3 days now and no releif from the pain while urinating. i'm still taking the Cipro from the ER as well.
Avatar n tn I have a girlfriend who has had oral herpes for 15 years. She had an outbreak, and took Valtrex and we waited a week until the sores had healed. Then she skipped one day with the Valtrex, and the next day we had unprotected oral sex. Immediately afterward, she noticed a sore directly on her lip. This has made us both quite nervous. This second outbreak was unusual because in all the time she has had it, she has never had a "second outbreak".
Avatar f tn I have never had an oral cold sore or been tested positive for HSV1 or 2. About 6 months ago I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend who later told me that she just got off antibiotics recently for a yeast infection but she was 100% sure she didn't have any STDs and the infection was already gone.
Avatar f tn Have you been diagnosed with oral herpes? Have you had oral herpes previously, or only since this relationship began? Have you seen a health professional, and has oral herpes been professionally diagnosed or confirmed by a lab test? Have you been tested for HSV-1 and/or HSV-2? Since you have had no oral contact with your partner's genital area, if your apparent "first outbreak" indeed is herpes, most likley you have had it for a long time, i.e. not from this partner.
Avatar m tn Did your doctor swab/culture the area? It's the only way for certain to know it's herpes going on. Actually most oral herpes occurs on the lips/mouth. Here's a good resource for oral herpes, that grace also recommends. As you can see in the symptoms part, there is no mention of swollen/painful gums. Again, only a swab/culture of symptoms can diagnose. How were you tested? http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.
Avatar f tn It's not likely to be herpes without any sores, but stop taking the Valtrex and see what happens. Herpes typically doesn't go from the genitals to the mouth as easily as it does from the mouth to the genitals. When you say you took Valtrex before you had sex, do you mean you take it daily? In order for Valtrex to work to reduce transmission, you have to take it daily for at least 5 days prior to having sex.
Avatar m tn As far back as my early teen years I'd get an occasional cold sore on my lip. No worries I'd just get the cream and it would go away. Now I'm 40 and two weeks ago had lower back surgery. I had a small fever blister but forgot about it. Two weeks go by and I noticed all these ulcers in my mouth along my cheek and back of the throat. I panicked and went to see the doc. He said it was the type 2 herpes but only gave me 2 valtrex pills at 1gm each. What's going on?
Avatar f tn I am trying to figure out how to minimize outbreaks (I seem to get one after every infusion) I am currently on generic valtrex which I had only been taking for outbreaks. I looked up the standard dosing for prevention of outbreaks but that doesnt seem to keep them at bay either. I cant stop getting th remicade so are there any suggestions as to what I can do?
Avatar m tn Itching for 4 months absolutely is not a symptom of oral herpes. You would have clear breaks in symptoms for weeks at a time with herpes. Continue to follow up with the dermatologist for the itching. Pay attention to what is going on with your jaw too. Are you clenching it when you are awake and asleep? as your wife is you are grinding your teeth a lot in your sleep too. odds are the stress of all of this is making you cause the pain in your jaw because of not relaxing enough.
Avatar n tn I unfortunately have oral and genital herpes (I've only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Avatar m tn Is so much valtrex safe? Will my body become resistant to the Valtrex? Am I a rare case? Should I see an infectious disease specialist? Should I be put on other medication? Do you think this will subside with time? I feel like I am a walking infectious being. The mental strain has become extremely unbearable. My everyday motivation is gone. I worry about infecting my girlfriend. It seems I am telling her 3 out of 4 weeks I cant kiss her,....
Avatar f tn Hello, i had a hsv 1 genital outbreak about a month ago, i have had this for six years and only one outbreak since the first time, my question is, do i really need to stay on the valtrex for surpresive therapy, or would it be smarter to stay on it to avoid giving it to someone else
Avatar f tn I was wondering if I can receive oral sex if I have herpes type 2. I'm taking suppressive therapy (generic of valtrex 3 times a,day). Can I still give it to him??????
Avatar f tn Valtrex reduces the risk of transmission of HSV 2 by half - should be just about as good for reducing the risk of transmitting HSV 1 as well. We do prescribe this for daily use with people who have frequently recurring cold sores and also for people who have HSV 1 who have partners who do not have HSV 1 (either oral or genital). You will shed some asymptomatically, but not a lot.
Avatar m tn Where? Oral or genital? Lysine is generally for oral herpes...
Avatar f tn most of us get more than enough lysine in our diets naturally. you are controlling your herpes with the valtrex, no need for supplements with lysine. this was really low risk. have you and your man talked about your herpes? has he been teted to know his own status?
Avatar m tn My wife has genital herpes and is treated daily with Valtrex and she has been outbreak free for well over a year. We have been together for 3 years and have never used condoms and I am still Herpes free. My questions deal with the possibility of contracting Genital Herpes when there is no outbreak. 1) What is the risk of contracting Genital Herpes between outbreaks through oral sex? 2) What is the risk of spreading the condition to others by giving or recieving oral sex between outbreaks?
