Have you been diagnosed with oral herpes? Have you had oral herpes previously, or only since this relationship began? Have you seen a health professional, and has oral herpes been professionally diagnosed or confirmed by a lab test? Have you been tested for HSV-1 and/or HSV-2?
Since you have had no oral contact with your partner's genital area, if your apparent "first outbreak" indeed is herpes, most likley you have had it for a long time, i.e. not from this partner.
My wife has genital herpes and is treated daily with Valtrex and she has been outbreak free for well over a year. We have been together for 3 years and have never used condoms and I am still Herpes free. My questions deal with the possibility of contracting Genital Herpes when there is no outbreak.
1) What is the risk of contracting Genital Herpes between outbreaks through oral sex?
2) What is the risk of spreading the condition to others by giving or recieving oral sex between outbreaks?
Although the intitial oral infection with HSV-1 often includes gingivitis (gum inflammation) in addition to multiple oral sores, sore throat, etc, recurrent oral herpes almost always is limited to a few blister-like lesions that recur on the outside of the lips, nearly every time in more or less the same spot.
I was swabbed and all tests came back negative however I did test positive for hsv 1 via blood work- my question is if this were an oral herpes outbreak genitally would being on valtrex every day for 4 months have made these symptoms subside ??? Is the pain people talk about with a herpes outbreak the actual open sores that are painful or is it a generalized pain ? The pain I am experiencing is like someone has the tip of my penis in a vice...
If unprotected oral sex was performed on both parties involved, is there a risk for him to pass it genital to oral? He's been on Valtrex for about four years and has never experienced an outbreak and continues to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The majority of valacyclovir prescriptions are written for genital herpes. However, it is also prescribed frequently for oral herpes; or perhaps somewhere along the line she had an outbreak of herpes zoster (shingles). But for the rest of this reply let's assume she has genital herpes.
Even without treatment, the chance of infecting you probably was quite low.
I have a girlfriend who has had oral herpes for 15 years. She had an outbreak, and took Valtrex and we waited a week until the sores had healed. Then she skipped one day with the Valtrex, and the next day we had unprotected oral sex. Immediately afterward, she noticed a sore directly on her lip. This has made us both quite nervous.
This second outbreak was unusual because in all the time she has had it, she has never had a "second outbreak".
I have never had an oral cold sore or been tested positive for HSV1 or 2. About 6 months ago I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend who later told me that she just got off antibiotics recently for a yeast infection but she was 100% sure she didn't have any STDs and the infection was already gone.
From time to time I try stopping the Valtrex and the virus seems to come back in the form of swollen, painful gums. Each time I stop Valtrex, it seems to take longer for the virus to reappear but it always reappears in the form of swollen and painful gums. I had this same symptom (although much more severe) when I initially contracted the infection together with fever and lesions on the penis and testicles and one strange lesion on my lower stomach.
I have had genital herpes for over 12 years. Very few outbreaks - due to valtrex and some...ability to deal with stress. Now that I am under more stress and fibromyalgia/asthma, I am finding that I have had more outbreaks than I would like! Valtrex does help, but what I would really be interested in is something that is topical like an ointment, oil, etc... that can be applied directly to the genitals in order to relieve the itching/burning, etc...
I immediately took Valtrex. On day 7 of my course of Valtrex, the sore was still there, and still, clearly active and I began to feel tingling on the side of my mouth, around my mouth, inside it. I have not felt this tingling sensation before but I hear it indicates that more cold sores are going to erupt. My doctor gave me another course of Valtrex. So now I am on day 8 of Valtrex and applying Abreeva to my mouth and I worry that I am going to break out again, but on the mouth.
You could have 20 blisters on your genitals, and still be able to give him oral. Herpes infects nerve groups, and genital herpes infects the sacral ganglia. This affects only the area covered by boxer shorts, basically. This means it's not a systemic infection. It doesn't travel through your body. Whatever is happening with genital herpes has no impact on your mouth.
He is perfectly safe with you giving him oral.
6 weeks ago I was diagnosed by a dermotologist with Herpes in my buttocks and between the scrotum and anus area (from an oral episode with a lady who also sat naked on my buttocks, no intercourse involved), after a week of pain and was put on a week of valtrex 500mg twice a day, the lessions resolved completely in the follow-up visit.
So I thought I had oral and genital hsv2 after an encounter that included accidental 10 seconds of genital rubbing probably less and giving and receiving unprotected oral WHiLE on valtrex is when this encounter occurred. I went off valtrex 10 days after that encounter. I received negative blood test for hsv2 7 months out but I am still concerned bc I am experiencing symptoms. How concerned should I be and what should I do at this point?
So, the million dollar question is, since my symptoms have persisted for 4 months and I had a neg blood test for hvs2 and I didn’t respond to Valtrex, can this be oral hvs2? All logic says no but I still can’t stop feeling that this is a mild case of herpes on my mouth/face. So much so I haven’t kissed anyone in for months.
Without a lesion to swab will I ever get piece of mind?
I would love to get an educated third party opinion on this matter. Thanks in advance for your help.
of bump on my lip and area on hard pallet. I went to an oral surgeon who looked at the lesion on my hard pallet and biopsied it. The results came back as benign pappiloma? I was actually given this news by a secretary and my follow up with surgeon is not till end of next week. I dont know what to think. Secretary said biopsy was not herpetic. Can you give me our thoughts? I am very concerned at this point.
I'm confused as to what types of herpes you have, so I'm breaking this down.
You can receive oral sex if you have hsv1 only- though keep in mind that you can get gonorrhea and syphilis from that.
Even without having had an outbreak, there is a chance you could transmit it giving oral or kissing someone. If your partner has hsv1, it's VERY unlikely you'd ever transmit it to them.
sunlight can trigger oral ob's. We don't have info as to if it triggers genital ob's consistantly if you are a nude sunbather.
everything else you mentioned really doesn't consistently trigger herpes recurrences. Most folks do not have food triggers and there isn't such a thing as the "herpes diet". stress also hasn't been found to be a trigger for most folks.
It's up to you how you want to treat your herpes.
What you need to do is have a sore swabbed within 48 hours to confirm if the genital sores are herpes. If you only took them in the beginning and stopped and have not had any outbreaks for like 8 months, you dont need to be on them unless your sexually active. But we really dont know if you have genital herpes.

I was wondering if I can receive oral sex if I have herpes type 2. I'm taking suppressive therapy (generic of valtrex 3 times a,day). Can I still give it to him??????
I went to my PCP who diagnosed me with herpes from visual inspection. He prescribed me Valtrex and tested IGG and IGM antibodies. The bump was already going away so I did not start the Valtrex. 5 days later I discovered two more small bumps on the inner labia minora. I went to the gynecologist one day after discovering the bumps and was swab tested for herpes. I also started the Valtrex. She diagnosed me with herpes as well, (since at that time the IGM test had not came back).
She told me that she has genital herpes and that she has 3-4 outbreaks a year and is on a daily dose of valtrex and to take that into consideration going forward. I still want to continue this relationship and have done some initial research and am not scared off but am aware that we have to be careful and aware, which is fine with me. The question I have is about oral sex. I really enjoy giving oral sex to my woman and want to be able to do this with her.
