Valtrex dosage for genital herpes

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosage for genital herpes

valtrex

Avatar m tn Yes, I am sure the second recurrence was hsv-1 because that is when I got my first swab. Do you think they need to increase my dosage or what?
Avatar m tn My Dr. wrote a prescription for 1gm daily pill of Valtrex. I already have stomach problems and am trying to minimize potential side effects with highest drug efficacy. Seems logical to take 2 pills at 500mg/pill instead. Would this reduce stomach upset and/or improve absorption of drug? Thx in advance.
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar n tn I unfortunately have oral and genital herpes (I've only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Avatar f tn Just been diagnosed with genital herpes 2. Have had five recurrences in 3½ months. Valtrex 500 mg didn´t help so now I take 500 mg x 2. What about my future? Is this how it will be? Constant pain and no sex? I need hope. I have none.
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about the advantages of switching. Valtrex is also approved to to reduce transmission of genital herpes from an infected person to an uninfected one.
Avatar f tn acyclovir needs to be taken 2x/day to effectively suppress hsv2. All 3 herpes antivirals suppress hsv2 about the same amount except for famvir doesn't work as well in folks who are asymptomatic in their infections. the herpes handbook is free to read online and has info on all 3 antivirals.
7868606 tn?1410358984 Valtrex is usually for herpes infections and they usually just treat gbs with IV antibiotics when you're in labor so idk id call them back and ask why they gave you that?
Avatar m tn What is the maximum suppression dosage for Valtrex? One doctor told me it was 1 gram daily, but my current doctor prescribed 2 per day and said that was ok to take as long as needed. He said in an immune-compromised patient, it could be 3 grams per day as needed, but no longer-term studies have been done about it to determine the upper-limit of the max safe long-term dose. Is this the consensus opinion?
Avatar f tn I only have hsv1 genital , i was on valtrex for the firs year then got off of it, no outbreaks until a month ago
Avatar n tn I've had genital herpes for 11 years. Except for the first extremely painful few months, I've luckily had only mild outbreaks about once every two years, just tiny blisters or papercut-like cuts that went away after a few weeks. I took acyclovir during the first outbreak (OB) and valtrex several times over the years. After ending a long relationship about 4 months ago, I began taking lysine daily.
Avatar m tn It is in the same family but nothing really is the same about the virus. Herpes Simplex is different thank just Herpes Zoster. They have been working for a vaccine for ages.
Avatar m tn zostex is used for herpes zoster and as far as I know not related with genital herpes, he said it was also an untiviral for hsv ? is that true? should I use it till the results come out?
Avatar n tn First, it is crucial that you know for sure whether your genital herpes indeed is due to HSV-2. What is the basis for your herpes being HSV-2 and not HSV-1? Second, your fiance needs a blood test for antibody to both HSV-1 and 2, which will tell whether she might already be infected with the same virus type that you have. If so, she is immune and can't catch it again. (Infected partners do not "ping pong" the virus back and forth.
Avatar f tn Initial gential herpes symptoms rarely if ever more than 2-3 weeks, especially when taking valacyclovir (Valtrex). It is very rare for herpes to not respond to valacyclovir. I wonder whether you now have a yeast infection, which can follow herpes (or any other genital area inflammation. Lysine is ineffective against herpes -- an urban myth, and some experts would call it quackery.
Avatar f tn I have had genital herpes for several years over 10. I get maybe about 1-3 outbreaks per year. I don't always take suppressive therapy, but recently I started then stopped, then I had a mild outbreak the week before last. I took one Acyclovir pill that day then twice a day for about 3-4 days, not sure of the dosage, but the outbreak seemed to be going away, then today I felt the pain again. The outbreak is still there but much smaller.
Avatar n tn Is Valtrex your recommended medication for Simplex 1? It seemed that the doctor didnt even consider anything else and just wrote me the script without explaining my options. Thanks.
Avatar f tn I know that there is a small, but real chance that I could transmit HSV-1 to him, but what are the chances that I could contract genital (or oral) HSV-2 from him? If he took a daily dosage of medication such as Valtrex, would that suppress the shedding of his virus and decrease my chances of contracting it? I've read conflicting research articles about this, but am curious as to what the Herpes community out there has to say...I'd be very interested!
Avatar f tn I am almost 39 weeks pregnant and have a longstanding genital herpes infection (almost 20 years). Last Wednesday I started feeling mild prodome symptoms just near my vagina but never developed a lesion (tingling and mild shooting pains on thigh, mild headache and fatigue but NO swollen glands). This is in spite of suppression therapy I've taken since week 36. My OB is aware of the issue.
Avatar f tn Further, taking the drug will prevent you from knowing the natural course. For all persons with new genital herpes, I advise no suppressive treatment (i.e. treat only symptomatic outbreaks) for the first several months, so that the patient and her provider can have an idea of what sort of outbreak frequency to expect. Over 40% of those with genital HSV-1 have no recurrent outbreaks at all. To your specific questions: 1,2) Neither sex nor friction triggers outbreaks.
Avatar n tn 3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....
Avatar f tn I have genital HSV1, from my partner who has had oral herpes since his teens (years ago) and we didn't realize it could be transmitted without symptoms (he had never had a cold sort in the five years we were together). My first reaction too was like yours. Now, almost 2 years later, it really has no impact whatsoever on my life. Most adults have HSV1 (orally), so that gives them significant protection against getting it elsewhere.
Avatar m tn I have had genital herpes for over 12 years. Very few outbreaks - due to valtrex and some...ability to deal with stress. Now that I am under more stress and fibromyalgia/asthma, I am finding that I have had more outbreaks than I would like! Valtrex does help, but what I would really be interested in is something that is topical like an ointment, oil, etc... that can be applied directly to the genitals in order to relieve the itching/burning, etc...
Avatar m tn ll find a cure for herpes for a good many years. The antivirals do a great job at suppressing shedding and reducing outbreaks. Most herbal remedies promising to cure herpes and the like are complete quackery while making the folks peddling the stuff rich! I still would recommend seeing your doc to rule out other potential issues.
