valtrex

55646 tn?1263660809 First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar n tn I unfortunately have oral and genital herpes (I've only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Avatar m tn After thinking about it around 12 hours later I realized I was at risk for infection. I took 1500 MG of Valtrex and will continue with 1000MG twice a day for a few more days. It makes some sense that the Valtrex could interfere with the HSV1 virus spreading from the initial infection sight to the nerves if you have Valtrex in your system prior to of soon after an initial exposure. Does anyone have any insight?
Avatar m tn For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug? 2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest. From what I've read this is unlikely.
Avatar f tn I know that there is a small, but real chance that I could transmit HSV-1 to him, but what are the chances that I could contract genital (or oral) HSV-2 from him? If he took a daily dosage of medication such as Valtrex, would that suppress the shedding of his virus and decrease my chances of contracting it? I've read conflicting research articles about this, but am curious as to what the Herpes community out there has to say...I'd be very interested!
Avatar m tn I have been dating a woman for over a year who has has a recurring herpes lesion that occurs in the area of her upper buttocks. That is the only place where it is occurs. She has tested positive for HSV-2. Before whe was diagnosed, I had unprotected vaginal sex with her during a time when the lesion (which she and I thought at the time was a pimple) was present. After her diagnosis, she began to take Valtrex but still has recurring outbreaks of the lesion.
Avatar m tn I have been plagued with very frequent, recurrent lesions on the same side, and in around the same location of my vagina/rectum for over two years now ever since unprotected oral sex with someone who has oral hsv1. I know that the hsv1 test misses 10-15% of cases, so even though I’ve tested negative, I’m extremely unconvinced. My doctor also feels I may not be able to produce antibodies because of my steroids.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn Did your doctor swab/culture the area? It's the only way for certain to know it's herpes going on. Actually most oral herpes occurs on the lips/mouth. Here's a good resource for oral herpes, that grace also recommends. As you can see in the symptoms part, there is no mention of swollen/painful gums. Again, only a swab/culture of symptoms can diagnose. How were you tested? http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.
Avatar n tn Hi, with valtrex for first time outbreaks the recommended dosage is 1000mg twice a day for ten days.
127596 tn?1210922622 She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly. Indeed I remembered that the empty bottle was for a seven-day dosage. But in all of the times that I've seen her, I never noticed a cold sore. Of course, she didn't have any sores anywhere else on her body either.
Avatar m tn My Dr. wrote a prescription for 1gm daily pill of Valtrex. I already have stomach problems and am trying to minimize potential side effects with highest drug efficacy. Seems logical to take 2 pills at 500mg/pill instead. Would this reduce stomach upset and/or improve absorption of drug? Thx in advance.
Avatar m tn What is the maximum suppression dosage for Valtrex? One doctor told me it was 1 gram daily, but my current doctor prescribed 2 per day and said that was ok to take as long as needed. He said in an immune-compromised patient, it could be 3 grams per day as needed, but no longer-term studies have been done about it to determine the upper-limit of the max safe long-term dose. Is this the consensus opinion?
Avatar m tn I am having a really bad cold sore outbreak (getting one right after the other), so I finally asked my doctor for Valtrex. He prescribed 1000 mg a day for 7 days to clear it all up. I am looking online though, and it looks like the normal dosage is 2000 mg a day, twice a day, for one day. I am confused, and the doctor's office will be closed until Monday. Anyone know anything about the dosage I was given and if it will be effective?
Avatar n tn However, ever since December 2009 I have been experiencing chronic outbreaks of cold sores. I sought medical attention this past February and was put on Valtrex. I noticed that the sores were getting more severe around the time of my period. Several doctors told me that going on a low hormone birth control (ortho tri cyclen lo) would be the solution. It has definitely decreased the severity of the sores during the time of my period.
Avatar n tn I've had genital herpes for 11 years. Except for the first extremely painful few months, I've luckily had only mild outbreaks about once every two years, just tiny blisters or papercut-like cuts that went away after a few weeks. I took acyclovir during the first outbreak (OB) and valtrex several times over the years. After ending a long relationship about 4 months ago, I began taking lysine daily.
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about the advantages of switching. Valtrex is also approved to to reduce transmission of genital herpes from an infected person to an uninfected one.
Avatar n tn 3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....
Avatar m tn I have never heard of Herpes being ongoing for 2 years I think you should go back to your Doctor about this,if the lesions were swabbed and tested negative for both HSV1 and 2 then this is not genital Herpes .... the blood work would suggest you have HSV1 orally.
Avatar f tn I understand I pose NO threat by giving oral sex as I do not have oral herpes but since I carry HSV-1 and the site of preference for this virus is the mouth, does this make it easier for me to transmit it genital to oral? 2) Is it true that the first outbreak is always the worst? If I only experienced two very small bumps with my first outbreak, is that the most I can expect in the future? And will the outbreaks occur in the same place? Thank you again for your very helpful advice.
Avatar f tn s I was getting outbreaks twice in a month or every month so I was prescribed 1gm of valtrex daily dosage. which would help for the most part and brought my outbreaks down to none or once a year again. but recently I have been getting outbreaks once a month it started out as fever blisters every month now this month I have a cold sore. I am at my wit's end and did everything to prevent an outbreak. I took two valtrex, three lysine and applied abreva.
Avatar n tn I went on Valtrex and just stayed on it for a couple of years but finally quit because it was so expensive and I was so rarely sexually active. I used to get cold sores as a child, so I guess I have HSV1 as well. In the past I've had HPV, the less serious type that doesn't cause cervical cancer.
Avatar f tn Unprotected oral sex. But I have oral herpes like I said. I’m mainly just looking for an answer about the Valtrex and the 4th generation test. I’m wondering if the Valtrex would cause the test to not be as reliable or delay the window period.
Avatar m tn i see urologist yesterday, he tells me to take valtrex for 10 days and lotrimin 2x a day for 5 days. i feel he just diagnosed me with herpes OB cause of my history. any advice? he aslo said to cut argenine intake and increase lysine is that true?
Avatar m tn I bought some Valtrex and took the recommended dosage of 1000mg three times a day but I only continued that for a day and a half. Now the soreness has calmed down and I'm wondering if I just have an over active imagination. I plan to get tested but I'm reading that the herpes test isn't very accurate until four to six weeks have passed. My plan if to get tested now for HIV and then get tested again in a couple of months for herpes. So...
