Valacyclovir for herpes zoster

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir for herpes zoster

valtrex

Avatar n tn If 3 docs say its zoster then its pretty definitely zoster. The valtrex dose given by Londres is correct for the time when the outbreak is present. In my country Valtrex is not licensed for suppression of zoster. You are taking the dose that suppresses the majority (but not all )of simplex outbreaks. The dose to treat zoster is higher than the dose to treat simplex, so I am guessing that the dose to suppress zoster may be higher than the dose to suppress simplex.
Avatar n tn Hi i would not think what your describing is related to Herpes symplex as nerve damage is more done from another strain of herpes called zoster also know as shingles which is terrible rash mostly on the back. also nerves areas that herpes penetrats are calle ganglia and if you have it in the lip/face area it would not show symptoms on the lower ganglia as with your feet. Not sure what to advise but maybe see a doc about this.
Avatar f tn Thank you for you help. This forum is a wonderful idea.
152264 tn?1280354657 Hello and hope you are doing well. Shingles, is also known as Herpes Zoster or Zoster. It is a medical condition characterized by the development of painful blisters on the skin along a nerve path. So, if this affects the nerve which is responsible for hearing then deafness can occur. Zoster is caused by the 'Varicella Zoster Virus' which is also responsible for causing chickenpox. The virus can lie dormant and can get reactivated at intervals producing symptoms.
Avatar m tn I'm a 36 year old male. About five days ago I noticed a single small red bump on my upper right thigh. It was somewhat itchy. Then about three days later the area developed into a rash with several red bumps. The bumps aren't really clustered together nor are they in a row, they are spread out within the area of the rash about 1/2 to 1/4 of an inch apart. The area was itchy and somewhat painful if rubbing up against my pants.
Avatar n tn It is important that this be done because the dose of valacyclovir needed to treat herpes zoster is considerably higher than the dose need to treat HSV. If there is any doubt, I would suggest treatment with the higher dose. In addition, if this is zoster, if is essentially a recurrence of chicken pox. If your GF has had chicken pox, as most adults have, there is no risk of transmitting infection to her.
1122973 tn?1269732128 I have no idea what test was done, she told me it was confirmed by WB. I havent been able to retest as my gyno told me she can only test by taking a swab from a lesion outbreak, and i havent had one. not in my vagina anyway, skin on the other hand has been going CRAZY, especially my arms and legs. I am getting mosquito bite like bumps and marks all over, and a couple of them have turned to scabs that look like ringworm. i want to know if i have skin herpes rather than hsv1/2 .
Avatar n tn I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, that you weren't snooping -- i.e., you ran into your partner's valacyclovir (Valtrex) prescription by accident. The majority of valacyclovir prescriptions are written for genital herpes. However, it is also prescribed frequently for oral herpes; or perhaps somewhere along the line she had an outbreak of herpes zoster (shingles). But for the rest of this reply let's assume she has genital herpes.
Avatar n tn Your doctors don’t seem to like testing, do they. Genital herpes due to HSV can sometimes be mistaken for Herpes zoster (shingles) which is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus. Thus without a culture to help sort things out however, I cannot give you a answer with a high degree of certainty.
Avatar m tn Varicella zoster virus (VZV) (sometimes called herpes zoster virus) is the cause of chickenpox and shingles, or herpes zoster. Only these -- HSV1, HSV2, and VZV -- cause infections that include skin blisters. EBV does not cause skin lesions of any kind, nothing at all like HSV. It is very unlikely your hand blisters are due to either mono (EBV) or herpes (HSV).
Avatar m tn zostex is used for herpes zoster and as far as I know not related with genital herpes, he said it was also an untiviral for hsv ? is that true? should I use it till the results come out?
Avatar m tn The typical one sided rash and numbness can occur with Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster or Zoster. It is a medical condition characterized by the development of painful blisters on the skin and numbness or odd sensations in the nerve involved. Zoster is caused by the 'Varicella Zoster Virus' which is also responsible for causing chickenpox. The virus can lie dormant and can get reactivated at intervals producing symptoms. Hence there is no permanent cure.
Avatar m tn The doctor just gave me a prescription for Valacyclovir and i was planning on going back when i was finished my prescription
Avatar n tn The description and location of the lesions you describe on your penis are certainly suggestive of genital herpes but for genital herpes to occur without recent sexual contact would also be most unusual. It is also very unusual for herpes zoster to appear on the penis although it does happen rarely. Trying to sort this out will be done best with the tests that have been taken.
Avatar n tn The pain could be is consistent with either herpes zoster or genital herpes and for either zoster or a first episode genital herpes to clear without therapy in less than a week is rather unusual. Furthermore, if untreated and cultures are taken in the first couple of days, the viral cultures are usually positive. This in turn raises the possibility of other processes such as another infection or a dermatological process.
Avatar f tn Hello everyone. So on Monday of this week, my girlfriend went to visit her gunocologist and they looked at her and said "were going to have to test you for herpes". As soon as that happened she called me and said we needed to talk. So she tells me what happened and I went and got tested immediately. I'm the first person she has had sex with since October of last year, after which she was promptly tested and came back negative for everything.
Avatar n tn She prescribed Valacyclovir 10 mg tablets, her anti-viral, takes three per day for seven days, also prescribed Mupirocin 2% for the blisters and Hydrocodone/APAP, SMG/325mg Tabs for pain. Recommended if pain is unbearable to go to the ER for possible admitance to Hospital and intravenious pain care. So far she has slept a lot. Thanks for your help.
1122973 tn?1269732128 I am still kinda shocked....and very confused, because I was in such an upset that I didn't really ask her what kind I have...if that makes sense. I had went obtain the results of the blood work for std I had took a week prior, and she said I have herpes. Gave me the prescriptions....She was asking me if I ever had chicken pox....and if I have had any breakouts or lesions... I told her I NEVER had any breakouts, because I havent...which is why the news is somewhat startling...
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar f tn By then it was scabbed over and healing. He rest for allergies, parasites, full STD screening again (minus herpes, for some reason) and told me it was a manifestation of stress as his testing didn’t turn anything up. Encouraged me to get my stress under control and take antihistamines for the hives as they happened. Divorced my husband in July of 2017. Blisters and hives stopped. May 2018. Same damn cluster of blisters occurs on my chest. I was determined to find out what it was.
Avatar m tn Herpes zoster (shingles) and herpes simplex are entirely different viruses and cause entirely separate medical conditions. Perhaps it is possible your distant past shingles was really HSV1 which was misdiagnosed -- but probably not. The recurrent sore on your nose could be simply trauma from nose blowing etc, but I suspect you are correct in assuming it's HSV1 that recurs when you have an upper respiratory infection. (They're called "cold sores" for good reason!
Avatar n tn I had very severe sore throat 10 days after the exposure and thought to be herpes. So I decided to run herpes Igg test for HSV1 and HSV2. I got the following results. HSV1 Igg test result- 0.1 HSV2 Igg test result- 0.02 these tests were done 1month after the exposure. HSV1 Igg test result-0.1 HSV2 Igg test result-0.08 these tests were done 6 months after the exposure.
Avatar n tn Thank you so much for your replies! so it doesn't even sound like HSV 2?
