valtrex

Avatar n tn are u sure it is zoster? It is unusual to get zoster every month, especially if u r taking valtrex, Are u immunosuppressed eg taking steroids, chemotherapy or are u very run down?
Avatar m tn I went to my doctor, he said he thought it was shingles. He prescribed Valacyclovir. I had actually put Cortisone on it starting a couple nights ago and this seemed to help a little. I have been in a monogamous relationship for several months. Both my girlfriend and I were tested for STD's about 3 months ago - including HSV IGG test - and were clear.
152264 tn?1280354657 Shingles, is also known as Herpes Zoster or Zoster. It is a medical condition characterized by the development of painful blisters on the skin along a nerve path. So, if this affects the nerve which is responsible for hearing then deafness can occur. Zoster is caused by the 'Varicella Zoster Virus' which is also responsible for causing chickenpox. The virus can lie dormant and can get reactivated at intervals producing symptoms. Hence there is no permanent cure.

Avatar m tn Hi, I have a question regarding my Hiv status. I had an sexual unprotected with a woman whom I met on a day and she looked healthy. It was in the year 1999. Also I had multiple unprotected sex with my girl friend( who is ex now) in the year 2001. I enquire about my ex girl friend and she seems to be happily married and having kids.(Not sure if she tested or not). After that I married in 2002 and have a 7 years old kid. My wife and kid doesn't have any symptoms.
Avatar f tn I think that you may be confused. Herpes zoster is caused by the varicella zoster virus which, while related to HSV-1 an HSV-2 is an entirely different virus. Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is the virus which causes chicken pox and when a person gets VSV ("shingles") as you did, it is not a newly acquired infection but typically recurrence of infection acquired years ago, usually in childhood.
Avatar m tn The typical one sided rash and numbness can occur with Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster or Zoster. It is a medical condition characterized by the development of painful blisters on the skin and numbness or odd sensations in the nerve involved. Hence there is no permanent cure.
Avatar m tn Whether or not this is herpes zoster or HSV, you should be on therapy for the outbreak. Drugs such as valacyclovir will help whether this is zoster or HSV.
Avatar n tn It is important that this be done because the dose of valacyclovir needed to treat herpes zoster is considerably higher than the dose need to treat HSV. If there is any doubt, I would suggest treatment with the higher dose. In addition, if this is zoster, if is essentially a recurrence of chicken pox. If your GF has had chicken pox, as most adults have, there is no risk of transmitting infection to her.
Avatar n tn Shingles occurs in people who have had chickenpox and represents a reactivation of the dormant varicella-zoster virus. The first sign is usually a tingling feeling, itchiness, or stabbing pain on the skin. After a few days, a rash appears as a band or patch of raised dots on the side of the trunk or face. The rash develops into small, fluid-filled blisters which begin to dry out and crust over within several days.
Avatar n tn No, shingles can infect any part of the body that nerves go to the skin. Certainly zoster of the penis is not common but is is seen. How much valacyclovir are you taking? The dose recommended for shingles is higher than the dose recommended for herpes. 1.0 gram (1000 mg) three times daily for zoster.
1122973 tn?1269732128 if that is what these in fact are, only occur in my skin and are itchy. I was givin Valacyclovir and zovirax. I was readin the prescription info for the first one and it said for "herpes zoster" . Is this what I have? Also grace u have mentioned zovirax is ineffective against genital breakouts....can i use it on these skin breakouts? Thank you .
Avatar m tn A month ago I had protected sex, using a condom. Already the same day I felt some burning when urinating. Over the following few days the burning increased and spread. My genital area started itching and tingling and I also started feeling some pain in my left foot. My upper lip was also tingling on the left side. I did a lot of reading about STI:s and found HSV-2 to be the most likely diagnosis...

Avatar m tn Varicella zoster virus (VZV) (sometimes called herpes zoster virus) is the cause of chickenpox and shingles, or herpes zoster. Only these -- HSV1, HSV2, and VZV -- cause infections that include skin blisters. EBV does not cause skin lesions of any kind, nothing at all like HSV. It is very unlikely your hand blisters are due to either mono (EBV) or herpes (HSV).
Avatar n tn The description and location of the lesions you describe on your penis are certainly suggestive of genital herpes but for genital herpes to occur without recent sexual contact would also be most unusual. It is also very unusual for herpes zoster to appear on the penis although it does happen rarely. Trying to sort this out will be done best with the tests that have been taken.
Avatar n tn In addition, there is nothing in your note to suggest that valacyclovir therapy, which would help both zoster and HSV helped. The only diagnosis that you have for your daughter that is solid is mononuc\leosis which in fact can also be associated with rashes. My assessment. This is probably not zoster or HSV but a rash associated with her mono.
Avatar m tn He said it was the herpes virus but did not clarify which type it was (1 or 2 or zoster). The bumps on my back were itchy and the ones on my thigh were sore. I have been in a relationship with a girl for the past year and several months and we have unprotected sex several times and i have never experienced any symptoms before. She has been my only sexual partner. She has never showed any signs of cold sores or anything in her life.
Avatar n tn This time, the doctor told me that he has NOW found some scars on my cornea and that is definitely not due to zoster virus, and Shingles had nothing to do with it since they had already checked my cornea earlier when the virus was active. I was also being asked to start wearing glasses if my blurriness became bothersome. And was giving those OTC “blink” tear drops again, saying that this is temporary blurriness due to dry eyes.
Avatar f tn But I think 2 days is too short of a time for anti herpes breakout medicine to work. She takes valacyclovir. Any thoughts?? How could she have gotten herpes.
Avatar m tn In dealing with the issue of your neuropathic pain, most experts in this infection agree that persistent neuropathic pain due to genital HSV is very, very rare (unlike other sorts of infections such as herpes zoster). did your pain improve while you were taking valacyclovir? If so, this may be an uncommon manifestation of a prolonged initial episode of genital HSV. Neuropathic pain is not a manifestation of active disease but a manifestation of nerve damage.
Avatar f tn Cluster of blisters occurred on left forearm. Went to my doctor. He commented that it looked like zoster. But called it a spider bite instead. Treated with antibiotics and a steroid. Took weeks to heal. May 2017. Cluster of blisters occurred a few inches away from the last set on the same arm. I had also been struggling with unexplained hives. Doctor said it could be another spider bite. More antibiotics. Referred me to an allergist/infectious disease specialist. June 2017.

Avatar m tn Further, as you point out, the risk of acquiring HSV from any single exposure is quite low. At this time, there is not much else you can do. If this were zoster, the valacyclovir could very well make your culture or PCR results negative at this time. My advice would be not to worry unless the lesions recurs. Should it recur however, it would be to your advantage to have material from the rash cultured or tested by PCR. I hope this comment is helpful.
Avatar m tn Herpes zoster (shingles) and herpes simplex are entirely different viruses and cause entirely separate medical conditions. Perhaps it is possible your distant past shingles was really HSV1 which was misdiagnosed -- but probably not. The recurrent sore on your nose could be simply trauma from nose blowing etc, but I suspect you are correct in assuming it's HSV1 that recurs when you have an upper respiratory infection. (They're called "cold sores" for good reason!
Avatar n tn Thank you so much for your replies! so it doesn't even sound like HSV 2?
