Avatar m tn What is the normal dosage of valacyclovir for suppression? I have read several places say 500 mg some say 1000. What is right or normal dosage?
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn Valtrex is the dominant brand name, valacylcovir the generic name. Do not take both; it would be an overdose. (Probably not harmful, but not recommended.) You get maximum effectiveness against oral herpes with the 2 g (2000 mg) dose taken twice a day apart; higher, more frequent, or more prolonged treatment will make no difference. 2) You are typical in not having an identifed trigger of your outbreaks. Most people cannot pinpoint particular events.
Avatar m tn m getting mixed messages in eagards to Valtrex dosages during an outbreak. I currently take 500 mg of Valacyclovir daily as a suppressant. But I am still having outbreaks. When having one do I increase my dosage? I asked my doctor and she said no since it was already in my system just continue taking the 500mg daily. Also it seems since I've gotten the diagnosis, that I'm having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression?
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor, It was a week ago today that I began showing symptoms of what I now know to be genital herpes. I initially thought it was yeast infection or something by the general discomfort and itching, but once the pain really started to get worse I went to the doctor last Thursday and after running lab work on the swap they took I received the clear diagnosis of herpes. She had already suspected that due to the visual exam and immediately put me on 500mg of Valacyclovir.
Avatar m tn My girlfriend has herpes and I do not. She is 55 and I am 56. We would like to begin a sexual relationship. We will see a physician for reccomendations but wanted to get your opinion on: 1) What is the medication of choice and daily dosage to lessen the degree of viral shedding. 2) How long should it be taken before relations begin 4) What side effects are typical 5) Do any studies indicate problems from long term use.
Avatar f tn Initial gential herpes symptoms rarely if ever more than 2-3 weeks, especially when taking valacyclovir (Valtrex). It is very rare for herpes to not respond to valacyclovir. I wonder whether you now have a yeast infection, which can follow herpes (or any other genital area inflammation. Lysine is ineffective against herpes -- an urban myth, and some experts would call it quackery.
Avatar m tn A month ago I had protected sex, using a condom. Already the same day I felt some burning when urinating. Over the following few days the burning increased and spread. My genital area started itching and tingling and I also started feeling some pain in my left foot. My upper lip was also tingling on the left side. I did a lot of reading about STI:s and found HSV-2 to be the most likely diagnosis...
Avatar f tn So I had a swab test taken on cuts that are on my butt and vagina and I tested positive for type 1 herpes 2 weeks ago. I was prescribed valacyclovir and I have been taking this twice a day everyday for the past 2 weeks and it has not helped me at all. I am in so much pain and I don't understand why I am still not healing or getting better. I just got my period and I am so sore on my vagina and bottom there are several bleeding cuts on my vagina and between my butt and vagina.
Avatar m tn refer to other drugs or to anti-HSV drugs? If you are taking valacyclovir or another anti-herpes drug, does your current outbreak frequency (twice a year) mean on treatment or before you started suppressive therapy? Pending that information, my preliminary responses to your questions: 1) There is a school of thought that the standard suppressive dose of valacyclovir (500 mg once daily) might be on the low side, i.e. that double that dose (1 gram) would be more effective.
Avatar m tn Welcome back to the forum. I would be interested in knowing more about the basis for the diagnosis of HSV-2. What direct tests for the virus (PCR or culture from the lesions) and/or what blood tests have you had? If blood tests were done, tell me the exact results, i.e. the numerical values for both HSV-1 and HSV-2. Did a health professional diagnose it in person, or is photograph the only time one of your doctors saw the actual lesions?
Avatar n tn By the way, the currently recommended treatment for recurrent oral herpes is only 2 large doses of valacyclovir (2 grams), 12 hours apart. In fact, you probably could even skip the second dose; just one 2 gram dose probably would do it.
Avatar m tn ) Would you double the valacyclovir dosage or at least up it? What about for long-term suppressive therapy? If someone could in particular elucidate how valacyclovir works and WHY it would be important/ unimportant to adjust that dosage based on wanting to suppress both conditions, you would have my eternal thanks.
Avatar f tn I suppose it is possible your symptoms are due to recurrent herpes, but I doubt it. Recurrent HSV outbreaks rarely produce fatigue, headache, or lymph node swelling, and back pain is rarely associated with herpes at all. And although recurrent outbreaks can occur while taking valacyclovir, they are rare -- and monthly is unheard of. It is possible your HSV has become resistant to the drug, but that's quite rare as well. As for valacyclovir side effects, you needn't worry.
Avatar n tn Hi, with valtrex for first time outbreaks the recommended dosage is 1000mg twice a day for ten days.

Avatar n tn My question is, can Valacyclovir be taken as a preventative measure if I take it a few days in advance of the big event? If so, what dosage? Thanks.
Avatar n tn Hansfield, Had exposure to someone with a coldsore a couple of years ago and, ever since, have had pretty typical herpes symptoms. I get reoccurances that occur in the exact same spot (give or take a bit) and I usually know when its coming because the area will itch and feel raw for a bit. Pretty typical sounding, I know. What has really got me scratching my head is that I've had 2 negative cultures and 1 negative PCR of the area (did it within 1-2 days). Also have been IgG negative.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Herpes 33 years ago and have been using 1000 mg Valacyclovir a day for the past 4 years and have been free of outbreaks until a few weeks ago when I lost my job and became quite stressed. I was able to take one extra tablet of 500 mg which stopped the outbreak from turning into blisters, but I am concerned if this medication is not working for me anymore. I also wonder if Valacyclovir is the same as Valtrex or if Valtrex is stronger? I appreciate your help.
Avatar f tn It’s hard to keep herpes sores clean because they often leak the yellow gooey fluid. Who can help me to dry the sores out quickly.
Avatar f tn On 500 mg of suppressive therapy (Valacyclovir), but getting outbreaks a few times a year; itching, burning, sore throat, headache, crack in/on tip of nose (which is most persistent symptom). Would 1000 mg once a day or 500 mg twice a day further decrease outbreaks? Would Abreva help with nose issue?
Avatar m tn Tuesday I felt pain in my groin lymph nodes, stomach and tired. My PCP thought it might be or might not be herpes. He referred me to a dermatologist and prescribed Valtrex. The dermatologist did not think it to be herpes because there was no blistering and could not culture. The spots on my thighs were still there, the spots in my pubic region no longer had white tips but were just red. The spots on my shaft were barely visible.
Avatar f tn Ask about valacyclovir in a dose of 1 gram twice daily (one of the main CDC recommendations for initial genital herpes).
