Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir dosage for herpes

valtrex

Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn What is the normal dosage of valacyclovir for suppression? I have read several places say 500 mg some say 1000. What is right or normal dosage?
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar m tn 1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug? 2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
Avatar m tn m having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression? Or do I need to wait to see my long term response? I have been on the Valacyclovir for 31 days. I'm terrified to have intercourse because I feel like I'm always in OB mode or possibly shedding. How many OB's are typical in a month?
Avatar n tn Valacyclovir is not known to cause side effects like this. Some people claim herpes itself can cause such symptoms, but most experts disagree -- and anyway such symptoms are not likely to be worsening as the herpes sores themselves are improving with treatment. You should discuss this with your doctor and follow his or her advice about it. Good luck!
Avatar m tn I was first diagnosed with genital herpes on 02/19/13 I was having my first outbreak it was just at the base of my penis exactly where my penis starts and my pubic area ends. I was prescribed with valacyclovir 500mg twice a day for 5 days, by the third day the scabs where dry and I had no pain so the treatment worked. Just 4 days ago I started to feel itchiness on the same area and it was a few small blisters so the next day I started again the same treatment, the same dosage.
Avatar f tn Initial gential herpes symptoms rarely if ever more than 2-3 weeks, especially when taking valacyclovir (Valtrex). It is very rare for herpes to not respond to valacyclovir. I wonder whether you now have a yeast infection, which can follow herpes (or any other genital area inflammation. Lysine is ineffective against herpes -- an urban myth, and some experts would call it quackery.
Avatar m tn 2x1g/day for 10 days. I increased my dosage to match that for about 4 days. Nothing changed, so I went back to 2x500mg again, which I've continued taking until this day. I'm too afraid it will get worse to stop. I should still be able to build up immunity, even when holding the virus down with Valacyclovir, right? I know not much time has passed, but I'm afraid of how this will develop. Will it get better?
Avatar f tn So I had a swab test taken on cuts that are on my butt and vagina and I tested positive for type 1 herpes 2 weeks ago. I was prescribed valacyclovir and I have been taking this twice a day everyday for the past 2 weeks and it has not helped me at all. I am in so much pain and I don't understand why I am still not healing or getting better. I just got my period and I am so sore on my vagina and bottom there are several bleeding cuts on my vagina and between my butt and vagina.
Avatar m tn 1- Is there any way, even very expensive to reduce the risk of spreading the virus much below than what suppressive therapy can do? For example, taking higher dosage of Valtrex? At this point, I have much less concerns about possible side effects. 2- Does washing the genital area with a proper material before a sexual activity helps in reducing the risk of spreading the virus?
Avatar m tn Welcome back to the forum. I would be interested in knowing more about the basis for the diagnosis of HSV-2. What direct tests for the virus (PCR or culture from the lesions) and/or what blood tests have you had? If blood tests were done, tell me the exact results, i.e. the numerical values for both HSV-1 and HSV-2. Did a health professional diagnose it in person, or is photograph the only time one of your doctors saw the actual lesions?
Avatar n tn By the way, the currently recommended treatment for recurrent oral herpes is only 2 large doses of valacyclovir (2 grams), 12 hours apart. In fact, you probably could even skip the second dose; just one 2 gram dose probably would do it.
Avatar m tn ) Would you double the valacyclovir dosage or at least up it? What about for long-term suppressive therapy? If someone could in particular elucidate how valacyclovir works and WHY it would be important/ unimportant to adjust that dosage based on wanting to suppress both conditions, you would have my eternal thanks.
Avatar n tn Hi, with valtrex for first time outbreaks the recommended dosage is 1000mg twice a day for ten days.

Avatar n tn I have been experiencing all-over-body nerve tingling for about 10 months now, after a strangely over the top outbreak of cold sores (HSV1) on my chin, nose & upper lip - the nerve tingling happens: scalp, ears, eyelids, nose, temples, armpits, arms, hands, groin, knees, feet, all over the place. Normally, throughout my teenage years, I would just get a single cold sore on one lip, thought nothing of it, but this outbreak had multiple small spots, lasted longer, and they were quite painful.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Herpes 33 years ago and have been using 1000 mg Valacyclovir a day for the past 4 years and have been free of outbreaks until a few weeks ago when I lost my job and became quite stressed. I was able to take one extra tablet of 500 mg which stopped the outbreak from turning into blisters, but I am concerned if this medication is not working for me anymore. I also wonder if Valacyclovir is the same as Valtrex or if Valtrex is stronger? I appreciate your help.
Avatar n tn Just wanted to follow up and let you know that I had a biopsy done and learned that what I have is "Spongiotic Dermatitis, Sub Acute Type." My hope is that this is correct and will be following up with a dermatologist. I received another PCR of the area for herpes which was negative. I'm hoping that I can move toward resolution now. Thanks again for your help!
Avatar f tn Hi I have a question, some of the online sites for meds. for herpes says that there r meds. that can lessen the numbers of outbreaks or get rid of herpes, I was wondering if anyone tried these meds. and do they work, because most of theses drugs cost lots of money. Thanx for any feedback.
Avatar f tn 1. Tell your partner you are infected, 2. Take daily valacyclovir, 3. Use condoms, and 4. Do not have sex if lesions are present. By following these steps people can go for years without infecting their sex partners. Hope this helps. Please take a look at the web site, it is very helpful.
Avatar n tn My question is, can Valacyclovir be taken as a preventative measure if I take it a few days in advance of the big event? If so, what dosage? Thanks.
