Valacyclovir for genital herpes

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir for genital herpes

valtrex

Avatar n tn The majority of valacyclovir prescriptions are written for genital herpes. However, it is also prescribed frequently for oral herpes; or perhaps somewhere along the line she had an outbreak of herpes zoster (shingles). But for the rest of this reply let's assume she has genital herpes. Even without treatment, the chance of infecting you probably was quite low.
Avatar m tn Welcome to the Forum. I wish that neither your regular doctor nor your dermatologist had given you valacyclovir when they did not think you had HSV-- you must have seemed very anxious to them. The lesions you describe really do not sound even like an "atypical" episode of initial herpes. The lesions were atypical and sound much more like folliculitis (clogged pores) than anything else.
Avatar m tn I went to the dr and was clinical diagnosed with genital herpes. My dr prescribed me with 30 1g of valacyclovir with no instructions on taking them. I took 1g of valacyclovir every day for 30 days. My last day taking valacyclovir was 02-28-18. I took a igG herpeselect blood on 4-3-18 and it was negative. I was told that the antivirals affected my test and i would have to be off of them for 12 weeks.
Avatar f tn t adequate to be certain. For now, stay off the valacyclovir and see a provider within 1-2 days of the next outbreak, for another culture or PCR test. It would not surprise me if additional testing shows you actually have HSV-2. Assuming the diagnosis of recurrent genital herpes is correct, whether due to HSV-1 or -2, there are no known treatments, diets, exercise, avoiding stress, or other methods that are known to affect the frequency or severity of symptomatic outbreaks.
Avatar f tn I have also been sexually active, which I was not previously for a while. Is this from rough sex, or is this herpes? When I take valacyclovir it clears in a day or two. Also, is it normal to be getting recurrences after not having it for years and years?
Avatar f tn Initial gential herpes symptoms rarely if ever more than 2-3 weeks, especially when taking valacyclovir (Valtrex). It is very rare for herpes to not respond to valacyclovir. I wonder whether you now have a yeast infection, which can follow herpes (or any other genital area inflammation. Lysine is ineffective against herpes -- an urban myth, and some experts would call it quackery.
Avatar m tn consistent condom use; and taking anti-herpes suppressive therapy like valacyclovir. Genital to oral transmission is uncommon, but could occur. However, if it's HSV-1, the risk of transmission (for either genital or oral sex) probably is quite low. Also, has your partner been tested to determine for sure whether she has genital herpes? She could be tested to learn whether she is susceptible to HSV-1 or HSV-2, or perhaps previously infected and therefore immune to a new infection.
Avatar m tn Welcome back to the forum. I would be interested in knowing more about the basis for the diagnosis of HSV-2. What direct tests for the virus (PCR or culture from the lesions) and/or what blood tests have you had? If blood tests were done, tell me the exact results, i.e. the numerical values for both HSV-1 and HSV-2. Did a health professional diagnose it in person, or is photograph the only time one of your doctors saw the actual lesions?
Avatar m tn I got infected with genital herpes about 5 months ago, from unprotected oral sex from a striper.... I took valacyclovir 1 g twice a day within 24 hours of the initial episode, and kept taking it until I got better, which took a while (a month almost).... My symptoms (ulcers, itchiness and pain/discomfort) have been recurrent and very persistant since. I think I have had symptoms 3-4 out of every 5 days since day one.
Avatar m tn Ok first, there are a lot of acronyms with stds, and I think you are getting them all confused, which is super easy to do. HSV = herpes simplex virus, two types, 1 and 2 HPV = human papiloma virus - can cause warts and lead to some cancers, though that;s rare. It sounds like you have tested positive for hsv1, which in your case, is an oral infection. You will have that for the rest of your life, but its very common, and most people have it.
Avatar n tn a) genital HSV-1 rarely recurs, recurring only about 1 16th as commonly as HSV-2; 2. There is little asymptomatic shedding of genital HSV-1 (the primary mode of transmission) and ; 3. genital HSV-1 is rarely transmitted to sexual partners, about half of whom are not vulnerable to further HSV-1 infection since they already have it, whether they know it or not (about 50-60% of adults have HSV-1 most of whom do not know they ahve it).
Avatar f tn Hello, I had a sore on my genital area( lookn nuffn like pics I see online) and thought I might of had contracted herpes so I went to doc n got antibiotics , the sore went down tremendously... Doc took a swab and no word yet.. And dat makes me nervous bc it's been days , although I tested negative for all std's including blood wrk for herpes..!!. But it's been days now n the butt pain n muscle groin pain is excruciating.
Avatar m tn Hi, I was diagnosed visually for herpes gentital after I had a few sores on foreskin of penis on 22nd May 2016. Since then I have been on initially on acyclovir and then valacyclovir 500mg daily. After the initial outbreak then just today I noticed after masturbation and washing my penis vigorously with soap just the head of the penis has a mild red rash.
Avatar n tn You could have hsv2 on your thigh (which is genital herpes), and hsv1 on your face. I say this because if you had it for 10 or so years before getting it on your face, you'd have antibodies that would make it next to impossible for you to get hsv2 anywhere else on your body. In any case, the type doesn't matter so much with Valtrex. There is kind of a rebound that some people experience when going off suppression. It's fairly common to get an outbreak after that.
Avatar m tn You used a condom for genital sex. This too greatly reduces risk of herpes with its effects being additive to those of the valacyclovir. 3. Most exposures to partners with herpes, even if they have a lesion, do not result in infection. 4. You do not mention the timing of your exposure but if it was more than 10 days ago and I suspect that is the case given how long you've been posting on the STD Community site, you have not developed herpes lesions and you would have by now.
Avatar f tn I'm a male in my 30s with genital hsv-1. I've had it for about 5 years now - after the primary outbreak I had another one about 6 months later. Since then, I've not had any visible outbreaks. In the past year I've been taking 500 MG of Valacyclovir every day because I want to take every available precaution to protect my partner, who is hsv negative. We use condoms always as well.
Avatar m tn OK so a little about me, i am a 28 year old straight male...i have had genital herpes for about 5 years... i take one 500mg of valacyclovir each day and have not had one single issue since the first day i got diagnosed... next, about 3 months ago i started getting very small warts on the shaft of my penis and i went and saw a Urologist and he burned them off for me and i was good, he was unsure 100% if indeed they were HPV warts or if they were another form...
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor, It was a week ago today that I began showing symptoms of what I now know to be genital herpes. I initially thought it was yeast infection or something by the general discomfort and itching, but once the pain really started to get worse I went to the doctor last Thursday and after running lab work on the swap they took I received the clear diagnosis of herpes. She had already suspected that due to the visual exam and immediately put me on 500mg of Valacyclovir.
1394650 tn?1283666239 I was diagnosed with genital herpes and already had my first out break and they went away on their own. My doctor gave me medicine to take when i feel an out break coming. What happens if i take the medicine when I thought i was getting an out break, when in fact i was just being paranoid????
Avatar m tn My first outbreak went away pretty quickly with valacyclovir twice a day for 10 days, but since beginning of May I am stuck with an outbreak that will not go away. It started with one sore - I immediately went to the doctor who prescribed me again with a short valacyclovir treatment.
