If 3 docs say its zoster then its pretty definitely zoster. The valtrex dose given by Londres is correct for the time when the outbreak is present. In my country Valtrex is not licensed for suppression of zoster. You are taking the dose that suppresses the majority (but not all )of simplex outbreaks. The dose to treat zoster is higher than the dose to treat simplex, so I am guessing that the dose to suppress zoster may be higher than the dose to suppress simplex.
My question is, I had a bout of herpes zoster back in April of 2007. Was put on Valtrex and was recovered due to being diagnosed within the 72 hour period. Would I be a good candidate for the new herpes zoster vaccine? My primary care doctor suggested that I not get the vaccine but I am a little leary about a recurring bout. These painful sore lesions can be due to shingles (caused by herpes zoster), herpes sores ( caused by herpes simplex virus) or folliculitis. You have to wait for the test results to confirm the diagnosis. The fluid from the blisters or sores can also be sent for examination.

I am a 74 yr old female and have had sacral herpes of buttocks for over 30 yrs. If not severe i do the topical Acyclovir, if severe i get on the Valtrex immediately. The last 4 yrs it has recurred every month or so. It is now eating into my sacral nerves and i have neuralgia. Right now i have lesions and the pain shoots across both sides of the buttocks. It is creating sciatica down my legs.
I went to an Urgent Care Clinic and he diagnosed it as Herpes Zoster and prescribed Valtrex 1g 3 times a day. Over the next few days the rash spread down to my mid thigh and on to the top of my penis shaft. The rash has remained only on the left side of my body. Since the rash spread onto my penis I have become very worried about it being actual Genital Herpes.

Approximately one month ago, I tested positive for HSV 2 IgG. My value was 1.25H (reference <0.9). Approximately 6 to 7 week prior to this, I received the herpes zoster vaccine. After my positive HSV 2 IgG result, I began a course of Valtrex. About a month after my initial positive HSV 2 result, I got retested and the result was negative (x<0.9). I was still on the Valtrex regimen when the second test was done. Can Valtrex cause a false negative HSV 2 IgG result?

I got a swab test done near the entrance to my vagina, two small sores were present that looked like herpes. The swab came back positive for shingles or chicken pox (vzv) the dr informed me usually that suggest herpes as the labs often confuse the two. He put me on valtrex 500mg x 2 a day. She was fixed on it being Herpes 1. She ordered a blood test and prescribed Valtrex. The same day my ophthalmologist prescribed Doxycyclin.The same day, my girlfriend went and had a blood test for Herpes. She turned up with a negative.
On the 22nd I woke up with more lesions (small clusters that looked like white pimples) on the right side of my forehead along my hairline. Additionally I had splitting pain in my teeth on the right side.

the doctor told him that because of changing the weather/temperature and exposure to sunlight its possible that his herpes zoster before developed into genital herpes since he wasnt prescribe for anitvirus when he had the zoster before... I just want to be cleared how this is possible to be happen...i need some explanation thank you..

Hi Grace does not pop in often but i will try to help. The recommended dosage for valtrex per terry warren is below:
1. first time outbreaks 1000 mg twice a day for ten days.
2. recurrent outbreaks is 2 grams, twice in one day, 12 hours apart or 500 mg twice a day for 3 days.
3. suppression is 1000 mg once a day for people wheo have 10 or more outbreaks per year. 500 mg once a day for people who have 9 or fewer per year. Doses are taken every day.
He was negative for IgG hsv-1 and 2 but positive for hsv IgM (which I gather is nonspecifc for hsv 1 or 2) He has had some mild skin changes (about 2 cm.) after two weeks on his scrotum that have not really progressed. He has seen an infectious disease specialist and is under good care and started Valtrex for the genital lesion. He also complains about left sided facial skin "tingling" without any other obvious facial changes. It has not progressed in 5 days of symptoms?
At the age of 73 I was diagnosed with Herpes Zoster (shingles) on abdomen. Lasted for about a month. Was given a prescription of Valtrex. I was diagnosed within the 73 hour limit, therefore, the blisters did not last too long. Now, I am wondering if it is ok to get the new vaccine for shingles even though I had an outbreak shingles. Would I be a good candidate for the vaccine??? What are my chances of contacting shingles again with or without the new vaccine.
Three years ago I was diagnosed with HSV but not type specific. I had a piece of my skin with the infection cut off and sent to be tested and the results were "Compatible with herpes simplex/varicella zoster viral infection." I lived 2 years with no break outs and also taking Valtrex suppressive therapy then got tested again with an IGG test and my results were HSV 1 - 0.07 and HSV 2 - 0.73 (<0.90 being negative). A year later I got tested again and my results were HSV 1 - 0.
