Im in the UK and it seems the first step is the urine test according to my NHS walk in centre but you can ask for the blood test straight away if your really worried....but I think that depends on any symptoms.
Ive heard different opinions on the urine test though, I have been told that its no good by one or two people but then afew others have said its fine for an intial check.
Ive had a urine test and it was ok so Im just curious, as it was clear is that it? am I clear for diabetes?

I have gestational diabetes and they do check with every urine test to see if you have glucose in your urine. It helps them determine if your body is having issues producing and using insulin. I will tell you glucose will show up in your urine the more sugar you eat so if you are eating a lot of Ben and jerry's that's probably what is doing it.
If i go off my diet and eat a few cookies they see the glucose in my urine.
Sometimes it shows in ur pee! But I'd wait for the blood work! It's ok don't stress.......think positive!
They check the sugars, he did a test with mine and I've never had high glucose in my life. And the colour it came up, he said I have keytone colours in my urine indicating higher glucose levels. So he sent me for a bloodtest . It's common for pregnant women to get diabetes during pregnancy then it go away once the baby is born .
tomorrow morning I go for my 1 hour glucose test! Can anyone tell me what I'm going to have to do? I'm aware you drink a syrup kind of drink.. Do they give you a blood test or do you pee in a cup? I have a fear of needles, granted I'm ok with it because it's for my twins! I just want to know before I go so their is no surprises!
Hi Super Sally. I got my results yesterday & everything was fine! I must have had a spike in glucose when I did the urine test & the urine test cannot be that accurate.
She said there were traces of glucose and white blood cells in my urine. She has asked me to go in for a blood test and I think a Prostate psa test.
I forgot to tell the doctor that I had been on antibiotics for 7 days for a skin infection. I finished the course on Sunday and had a urine dipstick test on Wednesday morning.
Could the medication raise urine glucose levels?
I did once, which alarmed my doctor for the same reasons.... but after follow-up tests (1hr glucose test & 24hr urine catch), everything was fine. Now I'm 34weeks & everything is perfectly normal-all 'risky' levels significantly dropped. The same may happen for you, but just make sure eating a well-balanced diet. Also, never have juice, milk, or any other sugary substance before an appointment. That was my mistake.

So I'm going for my glucose test today along with other bloodwork at 5 weeks. Anyone else have the glucose test done so early? I'm pretty sure its because of my weight.
one of the symptoms of diabetes is frequent urination and i agree with your doctor that you rule this out from the picture through testing glucose levels in your blood or urine. Like i said, the urine glucose is not used as before because it's sensitivity is not that good and many factors affect the result such as the medications i mentioned before. Your blood sugar tested 80 and it is below the 200 cut off so it's normal.
