Avatar n tn My daughter is three and a half years old and she barely talks. She'll say "juice" "thanks" and a bunch of other things and has a few phrases like "what happened?", but she isn't talking in sentences. I've tried many things like flash cards (she blazes right through them) and making her repeat one word at a time to make a complete sentence and basically encouraging her to talk as much as possible.
Avatar n tn t think conversationally he is up to par for a four year old. I am thinking of putting him in speech therapy to see if this will help his social and conversating skills. If you ask him questions, most of the time he can answer you. I am just worried and want him to do well in school when he starts in August 2010. Do you think speech therapy will benefit him?

Avatar n tn I have a 4 1/2 year old boy whom I keep in Childcare. He can follow 2 directions at a time when we are doing it for learning. Has trouble w/ 3 directions--have to repeat or tell him again. Also has trouble w/ comprehension. I will ask him a question:i.e....did you wash your hands...and he will give me a look like he doesnt' understand the question and say, "uh...".
Avatar m tn If I ask him to say something he will repeat after I say it but a lot of the time he as problems trying to get his words out like for instance I will ask him about the book we just read and he either forgets completely or will think and say "wee awah skating in book " a lot of the times he talks he has a gibberish word/words in front of something he says most of the time it starts with W.
Avatar n tn Hm. sometimes common refers to how often something happens in a particular age group. And there are MANY things to look into when trying to understand the quirks of a 3 year old and 'nothing to worry about' is a stretch. She is talking about thinking skills when she refers to common sense . . . I still suggest you visit a developmental pediatrician. I would rule out Turner's syndrome. And some of the other things you speak of, please let me know what you think of my above post.
709940 tn?1231900307 I have a 3 1/2 year old son who has very odd behaviors. He rocks constantly, lines up his toys and other objects, he does not play with with any children at all, not even his sisters. He is also extremely violent. He does make eye contact most of the time and his speech is excellent. He does not understand he, she, what, why or how and everything is I don't know.
Avatar f tn Let me start by saying, he is just fine & awesome on the counting! I have a degree in early childhood education/special education and children's speech really progresses at different rates. As long as he is using up to 3 word phrases and is 50% understandable by a stranger,he is doing well!
Avatar n tn If you are concerned about this, discuss it with your pediatrician and perhaps they will refer you to a speech pathologist for a speech evaluation. The best thing that seemed to work with my two boys is that I would speak slowly and have them look at my mouth on words they had difficulty with. I'd also do games like put on music and make crazy, silly faces and freeze them (turning music on and off). That works mouth and face muscles.
Avatar m tn My elder son is now 3 years and 4 months. His speech development is as slow as a kid who is 18 months to 24 months old. He started speaking 2 to 3 word sentences when he reached 3 years. He can identify pictures of family and relatives. Still he speaks some words which are quite meaningless. He has a few symptoms like slapping his hand on the face or hitting his head on the floor when he gets angry. He has been very interested in TV ads since 6 to 7 months of age.
Avatar n tn doctor (not a general pediatrician) and have him evaluated for speech and autism. The specialist also should refer you for a genetics doctor to make sure that he does not have some sort of syndrom. Is he talking but with vowels only? if he is doing this, maybe it is a speech articulation issue and the sooner you put him in speech therapy the sooner you can help him. When it comes to speech articulation, there is alot of help that the right speech therapist can do for the child.
Avatar f tn It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
Avatar n tn They have not even developed the understanding to concentrate on a specific thing for more than a couple of minutes. My son was a wonderful, patient, and could concentrate till he was about 5 years old. That is when we first saw some signs, and he went to preschool and had no problems. It was when he started Kindergarten, when he actually was diagnosed and the problems were definitely there then. My cousin has a little boy that was diagnosed with speech delay when he was 2.
Avatar m tn Hi. I think it can be really hard on a little guy to go back and forth between two homes. Some of what you are seeing may be due to that. It is really hard to have one place you are at MOST of the time and then go to another place. Hopefully you have a good relationship with his mother.
Avatar f tn Higher level on the spectrum, speech may not be a problem. Glycine can help with speech if the speech is a problem. The other thing to look for is does your child avoid social interaction? Whatever your child is, just love them and learn everything you can to help them. It is good that you are asking the question, I did not find out I had aspergers syndrome until I was 28 years old and my life has been incredibly hard and painful. I hope this information will be helpful to you.
168006 tn?1241012961 The speech therapy seemed struggling/slow at first, when he was 3 he had the speech level of a 15 month old and I was still devastated. By the time he was about 3 1/2 or 4 (he is 9 now) he finally picked up and started speaking a lot more. His speech is fine now but I cannot te you the amount of sleep I lost and concern I had over it for YEARS. If your insurance covers it, it doesnt hurt to get a speech eval or speech therapy - we went through Easter Seals so didnt have to pay anything.
Avatar f tn t have any further problems or delays. By 2 1/2 she said he was up to normal for speech and by 3 he was reading. That's why I didn't think too much about my daughter when she was 18 months old. When she turned 2, I had concerns. There is a difference between speech and receptive language. When there is a lack of receptive language (i.e. understanding directions, responding to their name, etc), then there is usually more concern.
Avatar n tn My son is four years old. He is very intelligent for his age. He can do things (academically) that most boys and girls his age can't do. My problem is that he has this obsession with strings lately. He spots them, picks them up and plays with it. He will get any kind from sofas, clothes, the floor. I have a cousin who has a son who does this and well he has Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am scared that my son may have this.
Avatar n tn I have taken her to the doctors and they tell me she’s ok for a 3 year old but her speech alone is not right. Please help me.
