Avatar m tn we have a speech and language disorder forum on Med Help you may also find some good answers there .
Avatar n tn t think conversationally he is up to par for a four year old. I am thinking of putting him in speech therapy to see if this will help his social and conversating skills. If you ask him questions, most of the time he can answer you. I am just worried and want him to do well in school when he starts in August 2010. Do you think speech therapy will benefit him?
Avatar n tn My 3 1/2 year old still wakes up with a wet diaper and does not know when she has to go. Her speech is about the development of a girl who is 2 1/2 years but she has problems understanding things that are abstract and don't refer to what is immediately in front of her. We are having a lot of potty training issues still. At least with developmental preschool, they did not require potty training.
Avatar f tn No, this is not a normal situation. He is definitely showing a significant delay in achieving speech/language, and this may be occurring in the context of broader developmental issues. An evaluation by a developmental pediatrician would be a wise course to take. Is there a family history of hyperactivity?

Avatar n tn I have a 4 1/2 year old boy whom I keep in Childcare. He can follow 2 directions at a time when we are doing it for learning. Has trouble w/ 3 directions--have to repeat or tell him again. Also has trouble w/ comprehension. I will ask him a question:i.e....did you wash your hands...and he will give me a look like he doesnt' understand the question and say, "uh...".
Avatar n tn she could be
Avatar n tn My daughter is three and a half years old and she barely talks. She'll say "juice" "thanks" and a bunch of other things and has a few phrases like "what happened?", but she isn't talking in sentences. I've tried many things like flash cards (she blazes right through them) and making her repeat one word at a time to make a complete sentence and basically encouraging her to talk as much as possible.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have a 6 year old soon to be seven and I am running out of options here in brazil. My son doesnt talk and never had. The doctors say he is delayed, but when does the speech stop being delayed? He is a smart boy he understands everything in Two languages of course his portugese is better then his english because he was raised here. I was reading about the wolf- Hirschhorn syndrome..
Avatar m tn But when researching on intellect i found he acts like a two year old. I used to get him to count, do some alphabet and name objects and foods but lately he has not done that. Potty training has been very difficult because he doesnt seem to care nor communicate. He has two little sisters (ages 2yrs ,6mnths) but he interacts very little with them. He still gets very excited about being around older children or kids his age especially boys.
Avatar n tn This is a comment to a closed discussion, but always relevant. The most effective way to stop a two year old repeating something is simply to repeat it back to them. "Yes darling" is not enough. They need to hear confirmation that what they are saying is correct, as well as the fact that you've heard them correctly.
404138 tn?1308941656 Two year old twins, actually they'll be three i believe in october so their 2 and 1/2 ( a boy and a girl) Ive babysat for arent talking much, they do know some simple words like hi, bye, momma, daddy, ball, water, cat, dog, clock, ears, eye, no (for nose) and they certainly know how to say NO!!!!and they of course know what it means. But thats about it! The boy says much more then the girl does, she babbles alot, talking in baby talk, I have no idea what shes saying.
Avatar n tn They have not even developed the understanding to concentrate on a specific thing for more than a couple of minutes. My son was a wonderful, patient, and could concentrate till he was about 5 years old. That is when we first saw some signs, and he went to preschool and had no problems. It was when he started Kindergarten, when he actually was diagnosed and the problems were definitely there then. My cousin has a little boy that was diagnosed with speech delay when he was 2.
Avatar f tn I did mean not typical. That is, the profile is not that of the average two-year-old, but this does not mean that the difficulties described are signs of an emerging serious problem.
Avatar m tn We did preschool when he was 2.9 months old for one half day a week (well, two and a half hours). Then the next two years we did 2 half days a week until it was time for kindergarten. We were at a preschool that worked with us and his developmental delay and he did private occupational therapy. When it was time to go to kindergarten at 5, he did go on time and without an aid or !EP plan. He did eventually get a 504 plan. If you don't know what these are, I can tell you.
Avatar f tn My two year old son is struggling with behaviors. He can be very violent, choking siblings, knocks chairs over, bites, hits, kicks, screams, throws things, gets into to everything. He is constantly on the go and doesn't stop moving until he falls asleep (litterally). He shows no intrest in the TV as I have tried using the Disney Channel to get him to sit..it didn't work. My son also does not talk other than saying mom and dad. He does not mimic any words nor does he attempt to mimic.
Avatar m tn can refer you to a child psychologist or a team of therapists to evaluate your daughter. Also, try the website www.autismspeaks.org they have lists of signs and advice.
Avatar n tn Since the odds did not favor me, I did not have a third. So, get a new pediatrician that can refer you to a good child development doctor and speech therapist and start helping your son be the best that he can be. As they get older, things get easier. My hard to raise child is now 9 years old and much easier (and a joy) versus what he was at the age of 3. Do not give up. Take good care of yourself and your family.
Avatar n tn I have a 4 year old daughter and I'm worried that she may have a development problem. She can't focus on one thing for more than a couple of minute and she can't answer a question when asked. Anytime that any adult asks her somthing she only says off the wall things. She has also started being really rude to people but never me. I am worried that I need to get her tested before it gets worse.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar f tn It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
1664949 tn?1303075099 He could have apraxia of speech, it's a speech delay where the child has trouble with motor movement. This causes frustration for kids because they know what they want to say, but cannot get the words out. My daughter who has apraxia acts a lot like this. It might be worth looking into.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar f tn Listen to the smart and expert doctor. This child needs a stable home twelve months of the year. Either the father needs to move to California or the mom needs to move to Texas or you need to ask for full custody in Texas with visitation by the mom. In addition, the fact that he only can say mom at two years is not good. He needs an evaluation by a Speech Patholigy expert. It is better to take care of these issues when they are young.
