My 2 year old grandson is speech delayed but we are concerned about autism. He tries to say @ 50 words, but not clearly.
Recently, he has started to point at things of interest and will point when asked at certain pictures in books. He smiles at others. He understands and obeys simple commands. He sometimes, but not always responds to his name . He bites and head bangs occasionally. He shows interest in other kids, makes good eye contact with his mother but not so much with others.
Yes, repeated infections can have an impact on hearing. Your son's development of speech/language is definitiely delayed, and this warants evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.
My son is 26 months old and has been diagonised with speech development delay but now I am wondering if there is more to be concerned about. He was also slow/delayed at reaching gross motor milestones of sitting, crawling and walking. He flaps his armes when excited or agitated, and is compulsivily clean. He can be extremely affectionate one minute but then start hitting, biting and/or pulling hair.
My 2-1/2 yr old granddaughter speaks nothing but gibberish. She speaks fluent gibberish, talks to invisible friends and pets, plays with her toys, and when other children are around she attempts regular speech. Should we be worried, she seems frustrated by her lack of ability to communicate with us.
Give him some time to respond to the therapy (at least a few months, I’d imagine) and then perhaps ask for a re-assessment. If his speech development is later assessed to be typical, and he is not showing any other signs of delay, then you can rest easy. If however, he continues to struggle, then you haven’t lost any time in getting him some help and might consider pursuing further services for him.

Hi. I think it can be really hard on a little guy to go back and forth between two homes. Some of what you are seeing may be due to that. It is really hard to have one place you are at MOST of the time and then go to another place.
Hopefully you have a good relationship with his mother.

I have a 4 1/2 year old boy whom I keep in Childcare. He can follow 2 directions at a time when we are doing it for learning. Has trouble w/ 3 directions--have to repeat or tell him again. Also has trouble w/ comprehension. I will ask him a question:i.e....did you wash your hands...and he will give me a look like he doesnt' understand the question and say, "uh...".
I found the info below concerning Muscular Dystrophy... it has a lot more detailed things to look for in 1-3 year olds who may have musc. dystrophy.... I don't know what else they may be looking for... wish I could help more. Said a prayer for your friend and her son.

Hi, I would take your child to a dr to make sure there is nothing wrong with him. Lots of two year olds cry a lot and are completely normal. 2 is a typical age for little ones to have temper tantrums. Have you tried walking him in the pram when he gets like this. I found it worked with my boys. It got us out of the house and lessened the stress cycle because the more they screamed the more I stressed and they would feel my stress and cry more.
m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
My 2 year old grandson has had difficulty sleeping from the day he was born. He has night terrors which started at 9 months at which time he was extremely ill. Naps were cut out several months ago with the hope that he would sleep 8 hours at night instead of 6. Helped some. He wakes several times a night, every night, and has always done so; sometimes with a night terror, sometimes he grabs his legs and cries "ow, my legs".
Now, you do mention things that I think you need to evaluate him for. His speech is not where it should be for his age. And you mention that he might not know his name? He CAN respond to commands or instructions, right? (which is good). I'd talk to your pediatrician about that. His speech doesn't sound 'too' far off though in that he is communicating with you. But if you are around other three year olds and it feels way off, get it checked out.
t think conversationally he is up to par for a four year old. I am thinking of putting him in speech therapy to see if this will help his social and conversating skills. If you ask him questions, most of the time he can answer you. I am just worried and want him to do well in school when he starts in August 2010. Do you think speech therapy will benefit him?
I'm a mother of a very healthy 2 1/2 year boy... But i have been told by his regular doctor to test him for possible autism but me myself dont think he has it cause he dont act like he dont know what i'm saying.. I mean he is only saying about 3 or 5 words and i have tested him for serziures but those came back negative.... If you can please let me know what i should do or if you think he has autism.
Thanks for the comments. Yes 4 year olds are a challenge and with 2 of them, it gets a bit frantic at times. I have learned to trust my instincts with things are different. He has a clinic check next week so will request blood work. It is difficult to guage sometimes whether they/he is just being difficult because he just doesn't want to do something or it is real. The hearing loss situation is causing him pain and confusion also.
He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week.
I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia???
My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
