propranolol weight gain

I had my first migraine when I was 12 and they became chronic and literally everyday after two car accidents. (Rear end and head on). I am soon going to b getting my nerves on my c3-6 burned to help with the headaches and neck pain. I'm only 23 yrs old. I had to quit my career (cosmetologist) I loved it and right before my migrianes randomly became daily I had an offer to become a redken color artist and do hair in big time hair shows up on stage with many famous hairstylist.

I also had my thyroid removed 2 yrs ago, making me Hypothryodism. Battling the effects of this everyday has now be compounded by the addition of a Beta Blocker. I ve been prescribed Propranolol 40 mg 3x a day for hand tremors. Since the surgery I gained almost 20 lbs, now that I m on Propranolol...I ve gained an additional 10 lbs in 2 month. I"m at my wits end, 5ft & now 185 lbs. Although the Propranolol has helped my tremors, I cannot afford this weight gain.

My question is, has anyone else experience a tremendous amount of weight gain like this in such a short period of time and did anyone loss the weight after treatment???? Please help! I am scheduled for tt on Friday and I pray I lose this weight after surgery. Iv tried propranol. Worked pretty good actually for my daily migrianes but causes such rapid weight gain I couldn't handle it. I know what ppl may think. Well u may not b in that much pain then to come off it it it helped. I have major body issues. And I used to work out hard and diet a lot and had a nice in shape body. Then got in two car accidents, neck problems now chronic daily migrianes. Iv had migrianes since 12 anyways. But the neck problems just added on to them!

ALSO, after 8 yrs on Abilify, had unexplained weight gain of 15-20 lbs. in spite of good diet, reg exercise. Now weaning off Abilify due to wt. gain and titrating up on Lamictal for obvious mood swings. Idk, Abilify worked well for me with Zoloft for approx 8 years. Good luck to you!

I'd stopped taking propranolol in 2018 and was in the process of getting my numbers right.

I am trying to control it because I have already started to gain weight.

I was wondering when u were on topamax did u ever get a sore throat or sinus infection? My neuro just added topiramate 25 mg to my 80mg propranolol for my daily migrianes. I wanted to stop propranolol as it cause rapid weight gain. 12 pounds in one week! It' seems to b working tho for my headaces but not worth the weight gain and Iv only been on it for 5-6 weeks. I just started topiramate and took my first one two nights ago and that same night was up all night hawking up mucus.

Thank u Annieinside.I went2my dr yesterday& asked about adding abilify(4me+my husband).She said yes it helps a lot but she will no longer prescribe it2people who dnt get it already because abilfy is apparently an anti -sicotic originally&thay make u gain weight(A lot&u cnt lose it).She said.she has1patient who cnt go w/out it.She weighed185 when she started taking it&I believe ahe said after2yrs the woman weighs over400lbs.

Normal body weight 115 (30 yr F) but gained 12 pounds in 3 days after start of propranolol. Continued to gain an additional 13 in the next 2 weeks. Began methimazole one-and-a-half weeks after propranolol. I normally eat 1900 calories per day w/moderate activity. Could I have gained 25 pounds in 2 1/2 weeks on that sort of caloric intake? Or is it the medication? DR said I had some fluid retention but made no further comment about the weight gain.

I have an Eating disorder too, so anything that causes weight gain will just make my problems worse. Please advise! Many Thanks.

Ambilfy and lithium will make you gain weight I was on ambilify up till january this year my brother is on lithium he is gainining weight from it He is 6 1. Some were I see I got the raw in of the deal on the Height lol sorry. Me being 4 10 1/2. Always makes me smile when I say it so had to point that in there. I know should not say will make you gain weight because I do not know your metablism or your body so that part was wrong for me or anyone to really say. It did make me though.

I also was on Paxil for years with good results. Then changed to Celexa because of weight gain. Then is summer..got myself in a real "funk" with 9 weeks of Bladder Infections and doctor put me on Efffexor. I did not care for it and it upped my blood pressure. So now we are weaning me off and I have been so sick. I going to go back to Paxil. This is been a terrible month..can't wait to find the right "potion" again. Anxiety..shaky, no appitite. What a life!!!

He takes the Propranolol now as we have tried Depakote(sleepiness and weight gain) and Topomax (recurrent kidney stones). He now uses Midrin and Indomethicin for migraine abatement which is sometimes helpful and at times has to use Stadol nasal spray. He takes an aspirin a day as he was having recurrent TIAs and the risk on Coumadin was too great. He tried Plavix(was allergic) and Aggrenox which increased the headache frequency.

Of course after filling presc, I read that one of the major side effects is weight gain which I am not willing to deal with, keeping weight off has been a struggle without any help!! Do any of you have any experience or knowledge of this Beta Blocker or what might be better??

I was diagnosed with Graves Jan. 2007 and had RAI in August. I am currently in hypo land. When I had Graves I lost 10 lbs from my normal weight of 125. I have been hypo since November, 2007 and have a TSH right now of 15, meaning pretty hypo still. In any case with regards to weight, I think everyone is different. Throughout this whole ordeal, I have gained 7 lbs. Typically I weigh 125 and now am at 132. Weight was a huge worry for me.
