Propranolol for thyroid storm

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol for thyroid storm

inderal

Avatar f tn I had a thyroid storm in October 2016. It affected my eyes and heart rate, with palpitations, heat intolerance, being hot all the time. I was treated with methimazole and propranolol. I was advised by the eye specialist to have a thyroidectomy ASAP which I did mid December, but just checked my labs and found the TSI to be really high. What happens now? Do my eyes continue to get worse? Can it be helped? Do I go blind?
Avatar f tn which drugs is best for me now.on carbimazole and propranolol but have stopped as I confirmed been pregnant.
1232907 tn?1367471737 On what basis were you diagnosed as hypo in May? Was it based on testing for the thyroid antibodies associated with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. which is the most common cause for diagnosed hypothyroidism? Those tests are TPO ab and TG ab? Also, please post your latest thyroid test results and their reference ranges shown on the lab report. If tested for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin, please post those and reference ranges as well.
458072 tn?1291415186 Thanks for explaining that question AR, I didn't know what a thyroid storm was.
Avatar n tn That isn't a thyroid storm. A thyroid storm is an emergency situation and requires medical intervention. What you probably had was a whole mess of symptoms from being hypo and having high antibodies. The thyroid regulates body temp so that was probably the start of that attack. It is very difficult for some of us to be out in the heat doing anything physical, let alone just sitting. :) I always use an ice pack behind my neck and in front to cool myself down when that starts happening to me.
1454777 tn?1288839052 Has any of you ever had a thyroid storm? If so, what was it like. I think I have had two, the first time, the er told me I was having a panic attach and sent me home, and I told them it was not, I had panic attacks before, but never like this. I happened again two days ago, but not nearly as severe. I stayed calm, even though it was hard to breathe. Last time and this time, I was out of it for a few days after.
Avatar n tn You get over medicated. Too much medication. I have been over medicated before and became hyper years after my TT. You could also have re growth of remaining thyroid tissue. It has happened, rare, but it does. If you are getting hyper symptoms please let your doctor know. That is why you need to make sure you get your levels checked periodically.
Avatar m tn Free T3 is the biologically active thyroid hormone that largely regulates metabolism. Free T4 is a prohormone available for conversion to FT3. Your FT4 is at the top of the range, suggesting that perhaps you are still somewhat hyper. You really need to also test for FT3. More importantly please tell us about any symptoms you have currently.
1413042 tn?1281770262 The endo has asked for another blood test in 2 weeks time. So, should I discontinue Propranolol or take it for 2 more weeks? Or try to wean off? Would there be any adverse effects if I stop it now? How much heart rate & BP is reduced by Propranolol? Will I get hypotension if I continue with Propranolol? Please suggest.
Avatar f tn Will an abortion put me at risk for a thyroid storm? I am on medication. I also understand that I am not the first women out there that has done this because of hyperthyroid/graves disease.
Avatar m tn He said my case is very rare and challenging for an Endocrinologist because the thyroid uptake scan ( I-123 ) didn't work on me due to CT scan that I had before I diagnosed with hyperthyroidism plus I was allergic to Methimazole .
Avatar f tn 40 I am also wondering about how long will i have to take the propranolol. what has to happen for me to stop taking it. I am not a patient person and would love for all this to just go away. any info would be great.
1668236 tn?1308156426 Hi everybody, I'm a 23 year old female who has recently been diagnosed with Grave's disease. I am starting Methimazole and Propranolol for treatment. I am curious to know if any of you have used these, and how effective were they at treating your symptoms? (My symptoms are: fatigue, tachycardia, palpitations, ^ systolic BP, shortness of breath, muscle twitches, eye twitches, heat intolerance, and restlessness.) Also, did starting Methimazole make you gain weight?
Avatar n tn I did have one storm before RAI, but also another one after wards, that is why I had to have the TT, my heart was not slowing down any. My doctor told me my thyroid was not slowing down fast enough for my organs to catch up, that waiting for the RAI to kill it off was not an option in my case, so did the TT two days later. I was a strange case though. Your body sounded like it was adjusting , although I NEVER fainted with a storm, I was bouncing off walls.
Avatar f tn Nothing is ever easy or promised with Thyroid disease. Were you tested for Hashimoto's as well when you were tested for Graves? Sometimes people with Hashi's will start out with hyper swings from nodules and inflammation. Just a thought. I also cannot understand why your doctor is checking TSH only on the last test. Free T4 and Free T3 are the active levels of thyroid hormone in the body. TSH is a pituitary function test and should not be the only test used.
Avatar n tn Thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) are likely to occur after the thyroid gland has been injured or after it becomes inflamed. Known triggers for autoimmune thyroid disease include cigarette smoke, stress, low selenium levels, seasonal and food allergies, sex steroids particularly estrogens, excess dietary iodine, and trauma. "Adequate selenium nutrition supports efficient thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism and protects the thyroid gland from damage by excessive iodide exposure.
Avatar f tn She is on 15 mg of methimazole a day and propranolol 4 times a day. At first the levels were not coming down. At our last visit her T3 has moved from a 15.9 to a 7.1. We were very excited to finally see the levels coming down. If her levels are coming down, why does she demonstrate such strong Graves symptoms still...tremors, heat intolorance, eating a lot, nightmares, very moody, joint pain, staring, inability to focus.....
Avatar f tn these drugs quieten down the symptoms of the overactive thyroid, by blocking the adrenaline-like effects of thyroid hormones. Propranolol tablets are the most frequently used." It is likely your doctor will follow up with you in the coming weeks and monitor your levels and decide what to do after that. Once your thyroid levels are under control, you chances of conceiving will greatly improve.
1308034 tn?1337644984 What were the symptoms???
Avatar n tn I am not a Dr by any means, but I thought if you were going into a "Thyroid Storm", you would need medical treatment ASAP!!?? I dont think "thyroid storm" just hits in the evening and then eases up and comes back every night. I truly feel Thyroid Storm is a life threatening medical emergency that needs treatment right away..
Avatar n tn sometimes Tenex is also used in conjunction with stimulants to help control ADHD symptoms....first I have heard of inderal (brand name for propranolol) being used but makes sense...Always to remember to ask your doctor any questions about your meds and health care...the only stupid questions are the ones not asked....Also beta blockers are also given to help control migraines to regulate fluxs in BP...not because too high but slight changes can trigger migraines...
Avatar f tn I had the RAI thearpy after hitting a thyroid storm. I had graves/hyper/toxic goiter. The RAI did not work for me & I developed thyroid eye disease. One month after that I hit another thyroid storm, so had to have the TT. This was almost 19yrs ago. Dosage changes were and still are my biggest issues. To much, or too little...and things change as we age. I can't say which one is better for everyone is different.
