These medications reduce portal pressures both by decreasing cardiac output and by producing splanchnic vasoconstriction. Several studies have shown that nonselective beta blockers decrease the risk for first variceal hemorrhage by 40% to 50% when compared to patients taking placebo.
Avatar f tn Hi rubatta As far as your question is Omeprazole appropriate for a patient with cirrhosis, that would best be asked of a health care professional like your doctor. We are not doctors here. We are either patients with hepatitis c and /or cirrhosis or our loved ones who act as our caregivers. You should discuss all your medications including non prescription with your doctor. If you have cirrhosis it is best that your doctor is a hepatologist associated with a liver transplant center.
Avatar m tn If so an enlarged spleen is a complication that occurs because of the cirrhosis and the resulting portal hypertension. It is a condition that is the result of the cirrhosis and portal hypertension and not a condition of the spleen itself. There is no treatment for an enlarge spleen resulting from cirrhosis. Only when the cirrhosis is reversed can the enlargement of the spleen be resolved.
Avatar f tn * Nyquil also interacts with Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol/nadolol) which patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension usually take. Medicines even over the counter meds can cause complications of cirrhosis. Talk to your doctor about how to treat your cough. That is there job. Good luck!
1008841 tn?1293598960 I already take Spironolatone 100 mg, furosemide 10mg, propranolol 10mg, which she not taking me off of. I have Thrombosis in my right portal vein. But, my BP is pretty low usually and my pulse rate is already so slow that I'm afraid sometimes my heart will just stop. But, what I really wondered about is that BP Med.that I've heard actually helps reverse Fibrosis in the liver. I thought I might suggest that to her but I can't remember the name. Can anyone help me.
89592 tn?1391274422 I was dxd in 2012 with cirrhosis after the previous gastro found 2 grade 2 non bldg varices. I am on 100 mgs propranolol am and 100 mgs propranolol pm. Now I have a new gastro who has mentioned scheduling an egd and suggested if have varices, he would like to band them. My last EGD was done in 2012. I have rheum arth along with sjogrens which does a number on my throat anyway along with the other overlapping r/a issues. I have not had anything that would indicate a bleed.
Avatar m tn Andrew, You say that you have cirrhosis (stage 4 liver disease) and a Fibroscan score was 30.3 kpa. The Fibroscan score indicates very advanced cirrhosis. Have you had complications from your cirrhosis? Such as ascites (fluid build up in the abdomen), swelling of the lower legs, ankles and feet, bursting varices (vomiting blood), Hepatic encephalopathy (forgetfulness, confusion, getting lost in places you know, stupor or coma)? Do you take any drugs to treat these complications of cirrhosis?
Avatar f tn I have a history of migraines for about twenty years. I quit smoking 7 months ago, and started propranolol 20 mg once a day. I gained 30 pounds. My whole body is sore and Im having episodes where my upper body and sometimes legs just feel so heavy and tired I feel like Im going to pass out. Had a Head CT, Head and Neck CTA, CBC, EKG all were normal. Is it related to migraine? ER doctor said it is anxiety. Oh I stopped celexa five months ago because I was extremely fatigued.
29837 tn?1414534648 The effects of different types of adrenoreceptor blocking agents on portal venous pressure were studied in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Oral atenolol (selective beta 1 blocker), propranolol (non-selective beta 1 and beta 2 blocker), and prazosin (alpha blocker) were compared in three groups of eight patients. Haemodynamic measurements were made before and after two or three and eight weeks of therapy.
Avatar f tn I read that too much potassium doesn’t work well while on propranolol because while on it the body does not excrete potassium as normally and you can get levels that are too high. Could this be the cause or is there an adjustment period while taking propranolol? I’ve been drinking pomegranate juice and cherry juice, 4 oz of each, with breakfast this past week. These are very high in potassium. Something is making me feel very strange and I’m hoping it wears off.
Avatar m tn Many pain relievers are dangerous for persons with stage 4 liver disease (cirrhosis). NSAIDs can cause internal bleeding and kidney failure in people with cirrhosis. It doesn't appear that the cause of your husband's headaches have been diagnosed properly. Slightly high blood pressure doesn't normally cause headaches. High blood pressure is called the "silent killer" because many people don't realize they have it.
Avatar m tn Does anyone know how propranolol effects exercise? I do triathlon and train using a heart rate monitor. I am wondering if I would be able to progress athletically given my heart rate would be lowered substantially?
Avatar m tn My husband has Cirrhosis and Hepatitis C. I am very concerned for him. He sees a Gastroenterologist but we are thinking about changing doctors. The Dr. is very vague and will not just come out right and tell us how bad off my husband is. My husband has had to have esophageal varices banding done twice. The first time he was an Alcoholic and almost bled to death. He was immediately banded. This 2nd time was a couple months ago and they went in to check the bands and banded off some more varices.
Avatar f tn The best I can tell you is I traveled from Seattle to Italy while on treatment for hepatitis c and with having cirrhosis for about 7 years at that time and had no incidents. This is just my own personal experience. For medical advise ask your doctor. Your personal medical situation is not the same as mine.
3122467 tn?1342138836 To deal with it, I take a beta blocker, propranolol, and it works beautifully. Not only does it take care of the akathisia it also treats anxiety. Once i ran out of propranolol because it hadn't arrived from the mail order pharmacy and the akathisia came back so I know two things... I still have it and propranolol stops it.
Avatar f tn I got my period on 2 may this month and it was very light like a red/brownish and only lasted 2 days approximately and my periods normally last up to 5-6 days and are quite heavy. 2 weeks later I have come back on again this time seems normal I'm quite heavy. Has anyone else had this problem or similar and would you say it's something to worry about I just want to talk to people with the same situation so I feel comfortable and can kinda put my mind at rest a little.
Avatar f tn re not also busy diagnosing and treating the flu and heart problems and body pain etc. So theoretically they become much more expert in it and the interactions between drugs and things like quitting smoking and also in the appropriate drugs to prescribe for a certain condition. Beta blockers, for example, have only been found effective for social anxiety, which doesn't mean they don't work for some people for other things but that's not their main use in anxiety treatment.
1475202 tn?1536270977 Grade 3 non-bleeding Varices and Hepatic Encephalopathy “controlled”. CT Scan Results: IMPRESSION: 1. This patient with findings of cirrhosis and portal hypertension, there appears to be an increased size of a hypervascular focus near the junction of the true right and left lobes superiorly, that is at the junction of subsegments VIII and IVA.
Avatar m tn One or the other is given and taken daily by people with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. These drugs low blood pressure to prevent blood vessels from bursting and bleeding which can be life-threatening event. If this should happen to your husband, he must be taken to a hospital as soon as possible otherwise he could lose most of his blood. The second preventative treatment that can be done is called "banding".
Avatar n tn I also take the Propranolol twice a day for my heart. The Propranolol was prescribed for my heart and never for anything else. Now I am currently taking Propranolol in the morning along with Paxil, at night I take Propranolol again. I take the Klonopin is taken as needed twice a day.
Avatar f tn In the end, NOTHING could control the levels and I had RAI and TT in 2008.
Avatar f tn I've been taking Propranolol for high blood pressure and tachycardia(10mg at 8am, 2pm, and 8pm) for about 18 days now, and four days ago I woke up feeling quite dizzy. Since then it seemed to get better, but now I feel lethargic, dizzy, and generally unwell. Is it my drug? Note: I'm a 15-year-old male.
Avatar f tn I take it daily however it is along with other meds too. Usually treating migraines and/or anxiety is not a one-thing-fix-all. And even if something worked on you in the past may not work today and vise-versa. You can definitely ask about it, it won't hurt. But, my suggestion is to just let your doctor how bad it is and let him/her choose what to give you next. Remember, treatment is a marathon, not a sprint.
Avatar f tn I have been given propranolol to take as I have had continuous palpitations since monday and my heartrate has randomly shooting up in the 100's (not related to posture!!) These will also help with my bp, it has been creeping up. I have had these in the past but was more recently on bisoprolol. Which is more common for POTS symptoms? I was in A&E last night and back at my GP's this morning. I have been refered back to the cardiologist who is going to see me in november.
4155003 tn?1351614311 You need to talk to your doctor before getting out, i try propanolol because doctor said i had hyperthyroid, i took a pill, n discover chest pain, do i stop right away, i went back to the doctor and told her what happen and she dismissed for me to take propanolol and she said my blood work came back normal, i heard if you been taking propanolol for a while is bad to just quit, it can cause worse symptoms, so talk to ur doc, she will recommend lower dose, then she will take u off, if she thinks i
1198742 tn?1293503376 Maybe they want to see what is going on with the med. Propranolol can cause dizziness and other cardio issues. Again, nothing to worry about. I have been on and off many times myself. "husband he sleeps his days and awake all night now" Is his ascites keeping him up at night? It is not uncommon to have day-night reversal due to hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Does he have signs of HE? Confusion, inability to concentrate, foggy thinking? Is he taking lactulose? Rifaximin for HE?
