Neurontin for chronic back pain

Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin for chronic back pain

neurontin

Avatar f tn Thank you for replying. The pain in my back will radiate from the upper right side of my back to my shloulder, I took the neurontin for about 5 weeks, it made me feel kind of fuzzy, a weird feeling. The pain doesn't feel like its in my stomach, it's about 2 inches to the right of my belly button and wraps up and around to my back. Very wierd, I don't know what to do at this point, do you think it could be gastro related?
Avatar m tn My pain management dr has put me on Neurontin to help with thoracic back pain, I have herniated discs that basically are not going to be fixed, no doctor wants to touch it. My question is how is this drug for long term treatment of severe pain, he also has me on Norco but I am hesitant to take because of addiction potential. If anyone has any input please let me know.
Avatar f tn He tries to interact with me and the kids and sometime he can but most time he sits or lays down in pain. Nothing he takes for pain works..he been on meds for almost 5 months now and his primary doctor say she is not a pain doctor so she can't help him. What should we do???
Avatar f tn both are also used for treatment of chronic pain, particularly chronic pain that is thought to arise from too much nerve activity. I have not heard patients complain of withdrawal symptoms from neurontin, although I do usually taper it off just out of caution. While the jerking of your body might be related to suddenly stopping the medication, it is hard to see the numbness as related-- at least not as a direct effect.
Avatar f tn My 10 year old son was perscribed gabapentin/neurontin (in combination with a few other drugs) for his nerve pain. It definitely helped but the side affects are a huge trade-off. He gained a considerable amount of weight too but I attruibuted that mostly to the fact that all he did was eat, sleep & be foggy - and wasn't able to be his normal active self. He's since been off the meds and the weight has come off too as he's now able to resume most his normal activities.
Avatar n tn He put me on neurontin and recently gave me a cream of benzecaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine. It is working much better than the neurontin but, when the medication wears off, the pain is as severe as before. My surgeon has sugested if the ointment did not work, he recommended I have another facial surgery in hopes the nerves causing the pain will be disrupted and the pain would go away. He said there would be no charge so I am not worried that he is trying to get more money...
Avatar n tn Most of the time I still use the same number of pills per day of everything but I can switch up the schedule to get a milder or stronger effect depending on if I am having a good pain day or a flare up day. On flare up days, when I take the neurontin in conjunction with either percocet or valium 2 hours after the extended release morphine gets going, I get super fuzzy for awhile but my pain flare also goes down a lot too.
8496079 tn?1398412516 Has the drug Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) worked for Fibromyaglia pain within a few days of taking this medication for the horrible pain from the Fibro? I was put on Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) yesterday by my doctor for my Fibromyalgia Condition in addition to the Norco 7.5/325 I can take up to 4 pills day as needed for the massive pain I'm in.

446049 tn?1649005835 Duloxetine for treating painful neuropathy or chronic pain URL: http://www2.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab007115.
Avatar n tn If you use Aleve be careful if you are on Neurontin because is a small amount of cases Aleve will interact with Neurontin and cause a 12 - 15% increase in the absorption of the Neurontin (I know this from first hand experience).
630344 tn?1280104983 I'm taking the generic form, just recently resumed but have used it in the past. Neurontin is Rx-ed for nerve pain as an "off label" use, that it, treating nerve pain is not the function for which it was designed so it's not listed as a use on the manufacturer's label. It is actually an anti-seizure med, but it was found to also reduce neuropathy in patients. It is my understanding that Lyrica works much in the same way, and is a newer medication by the same company.
Avatar f tn Currently on 300 mgs. of neurontin 2 times a day for chronic pain. Can I smoke marijuana while taking this medication, or should I stop taking the meds. ? My goal is to get off the med. if marijuana will help the pain.
1359227 tn?1282522148 Has anybody tried Neurontin? Does it work for nerve pain? How long does it take to take effect? My doctor prescribed it for me today...I haven't picked it up yet...I'm hoping it will help..
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor and try to get some help in finding out if your pain is nerve based because if it is Neurontin can help. Neurontin is used for nerve pain. Also you can talk to your doctor to find out if some of the pain is from muscle spasms because there is a medication that might help called flexeril. It's a muscle relaxer but in my experience not a very strong one so it may help. Have you been diagnosed with depression or fibromyalgia? Lyrica is used for both of these disorders.
1943759 tn?1324045251 If it only lasts for a few days you can have him take Tramadol or Vicadin (but only for a few days). If the pain is there for long perioids of time then drugs that help neuropathies like neurontin or Lyrica may help. I don't usually recommend physical therapy but after the has gone down and if it is disk decompression there are some stretching exercises he can do daily that will help with the decompression. My brother in law has this and it has helped him a lot.
Avatar f tn I thought that stuff was kind of scary too. I have major chronic pain from spinal cord damage and require narcotic painkillers for it. There are doctors out there who dislike narcotics for any reason and the last time I had surgery one of those pain specialists was consulted. They insisted on putting me on neurontin, and it really messed me up. Even when I thought I had things under control again I didn't really. I was falling down all the time!
Avatar n tn I take Neurontin for severe nerve pain at disc, low back, legs and feet. Nerve pain started immediatley after sed/ta disc surgery. Have taken neurontin for 8 years. Gained 40 lbs within in 6 months of starting Neurontin. Started losing hair when began Neurontin. Fortunately I had lots of hair to start with but 8 years later, I will soon have to wear a wig because of the dramatic hair loss. Also frustrated that cannot get the 40 pounds off either.
17076549 tn?1453508475 The pain has kept getting worse, and I returned to the doctor several times about it. He prescribed neurontin for the diabetic nerve pain, which helps a bit with that, but it is the pain in my back and shoulders which is the serious problem, and he refused to prescribe anything for that. The pain is so severe that I often can barely get out of bed or stand or walk for more than a few minutes. No position in a chair or a bed is comfortable. I can hardly sleep because the pain keeps me awake.
Avatar f tn Especially considering my health, I have low back issues, have had major back surgery, permenent nerve damage that affects my legs and also was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a year and a half ago at the age of 27. I have been on medication for my back issues for almost 2 years, I take Norco 10/325 4 times a day and Neurontin 300 mgs 3 times a day.
1029507 tn?1287714315 I was on Neurontin and then Lyrica for nerve pain while undiagnosed. I've taken NSAIDs (both OTC and Rx) which at best take the edge off of my joint pain. I haven't had pain that is both bad and persistent enough to make me consider other options. While I've had periods of more intense pain, they have thankfully been relatively brief. My best (untrained lay-person!) advice is to be open with your doc about the type and severity of pain so that they can do their best to help.
209591 tn?1267414714 d definitely see about better pain control. Depending on the pain, opiates will work for some pain, other meds for other pain, but whatever it is, get you an appropriate big-time drug and see how much your attitude improves. Also, whatever medicine you're on now, review it for "depression" side effects, and perhaps adjust those as-needed. And remember that going off that Cymbalta, even slowly, takes some real getting used to.
Avatar n tn I have suffered from chronic back of leg/hamstring pain for 10 years. Pain in both hamstrings - that is worse when sitting or sleeping. During deep massage, the pain can be brought on by extremely deep pressure, which for me, feels like scratching an itch. It comes on for months and them it goes away for months. I don't sleep well, I'm a light sleeper and I have 3 small children that are up a lot. I am in pain right now and even taking oxycondon doesn't help.
Avatar m tn That is what I call Tweeks, you get tweeked and more pain for about three days to a week. I was on Neurontin and actually have myofascial pain but they thought it may have been a nerve at first. The neurontin didn't do a thing for me. I was on 1200mg/day and it took me two months to get off of it because I got insomnia and had to take benedryl to get off of it and be able to sleep. It is low on side effects except feeling tired and dumb.
Avatar n tn I am not a doctor but was prescribed the neurontin for chronic pain and stress so it might help you. If your Dr. has given you this script then trust he knows what hes doing. It won't hurt to give it a try, I did and I'm glad I did.
Avatar f tn Since then, I have had referred pain which gives me bad headaches. I have worked with a Physical Therapist for a while and he feels that it is coming from the first 2-3 true ribs and neck area. I have tried trigger point injects which did not work well. I had been on different preventative meds for headaches (nortryptyline, depakote, lyrica, topomax) for 5 yrs but stopped due to side effects. I have not tried neurontin and was prescribed this by my family physician.
