1983221 tn?1333506185 I take both gabapentin and amitriptilyne (Elavil) for my neuropathic foot pain. I started with 300mg gabapentin and worked my way up to 3600mg. I take 1200mg 3X/day. By itself it didn't do that much for my pain. We added 25mg amitriptilyne to the gabapentin and I saw some relief. We upped it to 50mg 1X/day and my pain was gone completely! I guess I'm luck not to have any side effects from either drug.
Avatar f tn My 10 year old son was perscribed gabapentin/neurontin (in combination with a few other drugs) for his nerve pain. It definitely helped but the side affects are a huge trade-off. He gained a considerable amount of weight too but I attruibuted that mostly to the fact that all he did was eat, sleep & be foggy - and wasn't able to be his normal active self. He's since been off the meds and the weight has come off too as he's now able to resume most his normal activities.

Quotes: A number of studies have shown that different kinds of nerve pain can improve by supplementation with high dose B vitamins. Vitamin D 2,000 units a day was also shown to decrease diabetic neuropathy pain by 47% after 3 months.
Avatar f tn Neurontin (gabapentin) can be an effective treatment for neuropathic pain, but would seem unlikely to have any effect on any other symptoms, such as gray patches, sharpness, or color saturation. As has been repeatedly discussed here, however, it's not something one just starts taking; it is an adjustment process. See the Health Page on treating neuropathic pain.
Avatar f tn Hi could anyone give me any views on carbamazepine for pain please?
Avatar f tn And yes, I do notice when I miss a dose of either one. Are you taking Neurontin for neuropathic pain? You definitely have room to increase. Talk to your doc. You might also want to consider adding nortriptyline or amitriptyline to enhance treatment of your symptoms, again, if it is pain you're taking it for.
Avatar n tn Hi, please narrate your exact symptoms along with diagnosis, although drugs effective for neuropathic pain are carbamazepine, gabapentin, venlafaxine, amitryptline, tramadol, pregabaline etc. For more information visit http://www.patient.co.
Avatar f tn -) There are many options out there for pain relief but you must find the cause of the pain or treatment will fail. So if you took Baclofen thinking it's muscle spasms but it's actually neuropathic pain then you will get no relief. Take Care, Karry.
1359227 tn?1282522148 I've been on it for several years for nerve pain. It has been, for the most part, effective. I am also on Cymbalta, also for nerve pain. These two meds, plus oxycodone, baclofen and nerve blocks provide considerable relief.
Avatar n tn Hello, I was looking for some treatment options for General Neuropathic Pain as the only diagnosis my dr can provide me after negative EMGs both upper and lower extremeties and complete work up including MRIs, bone scans, x-rays, and blood tests. My pain is debilitating sciatica like in both legs and ulnar nerve pain in both arms from shoulder down to the pinky fingers which feels like tightness in so many muscle groups. Pain for 2 years without answer or any treatment to help.
758281 tn?1234115374 ), that should be helping the pain if it is neuropathic. Also, neuropathic pain arises from nerves, and not from injury to the actual sites of the pain. You do have visible injuries there, swelling and discoloration. From another perspective, though, maybe this really is from MS, but it isn't neuropathic, it's from the spasms. If you are having major muscle spasms, that could really injure your feet, possibly causing swelling and bruising.
Avatar f tn Neurontin has an interesting background. It was once heavily marketed to pain cliinics for treatment of neuropathic pain, and is still used for that purpose. But it was also marketed (illegally, according to the FDA) as a mood stabilizer, even though there are no good studies showing it is effective treatment for bipolar disorder. The company that makes the drug was hit with t large fine about ten years ago for taking docs to the Caribbean and giving them lectures and marketing pitches...
Avatar f tn Is widely used to treat neuropathic pain. It is FDA approved for post-herpetic neuralgia. It has always been very effective in treating other forms of neuropathic pain. Neurontin has been demonstrated to reduce the symptoms from periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS) also known as restless leg syndrome but dosing up to 2400 mg per day may be required. This drug is also widely used in the prevention of migraines and the list goes on.
Avatar m tn As with other conditions, medications that were originally invented for other purposes are useful for pain. This is true of neurontin and lyrica which were originally invented for seizures. Lyrica is similar to neurontin but has less side effects and often people who can not tolerate neurontin benefit from lyrica. However it is more expensive.
Avatar n tn Topical doxepin and caspasin cream are also helpful for neuropathic itching. Anti-seizure medications found to be useful for neuropathic itching include neurontin and lyrica. It is very important that in neuropathic itching narcotics such as dilaudid, vicodin, percocet etc be avoided as these are well known to cause itching as a side effect and to worsen neuropathic itching. I recommend you continue to follow-up with your neurologist regarding the optimal treatment of your symptoms.
Avatar f tn ve found is that with several of these patients, part of the pain is neuropathic in origin (pain due to damage to nerves because of the mastectomy). Addition of another drug which directly controls neuropathic pain, such as gabapentin (Neurontin) or pregabalin (Lyrica) usually eases the symptom. This may work for you. You can use heating pads, for as long as you do not apply excessive heat and macerate the tissue surrounding the wound.
630344 tn?1280104983 I'm taking the generic form, just recently resumed but have used it in the past. Neurontin is Rx-ed for nerve pain as an "off label" use, that it, treating nerve pain is not the function for which it was designed so it's not listed as a use on the manufacturer's label. It is actually an anti-seizure med, but it was found to also reduce neuropathy in patients. It is my understanding that Lyrica works much in the same way, and is a newer medication by the same company.
Avatar m tn He learned that the MSIR, given for the cancer treatment pain, was able to manage the neuropathic pain. There has been no etiology determined for the neuropathy. His Lumbar puncture was normal except for elevated protein. His skin is very hot when his pain is bad, & he is lightheaded & unsteady.
Avatar f tn m looking for something other than Vicodin, Percocet and Neurontin (3600 mg/day) to use for pain. The Vicodin works a little bit, as does the Percocet. The Neurontin also works a little bit and again, am looking for one pain RX that would work for all instead of taking more than one. Have a friend on the Fentanyl patch and she swears by it. Says it is much better at pain relief than the Percocet or Vicodin and she's not on Neurontin. Please help.
