Gabapentin in the treatment of neuropathic pain

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin in the treatment of neuropathic pain

neurontin

Avatar m tn Please click on the two links below. the first one is explaining what neuropathic pain is and the second is describing how to treat it and explaining why you want (actually NEED) to go slow. No one WANTS to go slow, of course. http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Multiple%20Sclerosis/Pain---A-Primer/show/371?cid=36 http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Multiple%20Sclerosis/General-Principles-of-Treating-Neuropathic-Nerve-Pain/show/452?
Avatar f tn -) There are many options out there for pain relief but you must find the cause of the pain or treatment will fail. So if you took Baclofen thinking it's muscle spasms but it's actually neuropathic pain then you will get no relief. Take Care, Karry.
Avatar f tn ve had optic neuritis in the past, it mostly impacted my vision (gray area in the center of the vision in one eye and a difference in the brightness of the color red in that eye). The only thing I could do then was not travel (as I do for work). That is not an option right now, so I am definitely looking for some other options. Any ideas?
Avatar n tn Is there any type of vitamin available for neuropathy pain in the upper limbs? This discussion is related to Information on Cavernous Hemangioma.
Avatar f tn I get burning, sharp stabbing/shooting type pain, electric shock like pain, pins and needles, prickly sensations, numbness and some times my lower legs can be sensitive to touch, it feels like the pain runs down a set nerve, it is mainly in my legs, groin/pubic area, of late the pain in my pubic area has been so intense it can cause bladder leakage., I also get some painless twitching.
382218 tn?1341181487 - nabilone - sativex These are just a few of the multiple medications your doctor may use for neuropathic pain. Unfortunately because of the rules in this forum I cannot comment on all the off-label medications which we use, but suffice it to say there are many more and they usually fall under the categories of anti-seizure medications and antidepressants. I do not use cannibinoids, nor do I personally recommend them.
293157 tn?1285873439 Because I seem to be responding better to this latter drug, I am now slowly weaning off the gabapentin. I guess if the pain increases as I go off the gabapentin, this will tell me it was helping more than I realized. I have no side effects from the gabapentin, even at such a high dose. I do find the 50mg amitriptyline makes me very drowsy, and may need to scale it back to 40mg if this side effect continues.
Avatar f tn m taking gabapentin for TN and occipital neuralgia (I assume is probably lessens the tingling in my arm and leg as well) and most of the time I have reasonable pain control. However, there are times when the pain really flares up and I'm not sure if there's anything I can do for that. I don't know if gabapentin (neurontin) has a "short term" effect--e.g. if I took an extra dose, would it help?
1896537 tn?1381900009 I first felt it as an achey crampy feeling in my right hand/wrist/fingers and stabbing pain in the yop of my head and eyes but just lately I get shooting pain in my left hand too and my feet throb/crampy feeling. You know the feeling of general aches & pains you get with flu? It's almost like that except the pains are not all the same. Is this my ms or should I be thinking of other explanations? If it is ms, what's the best pain relief to try?
Avatar f tn Im going to start to slowly reduce the Gabapentin in hope that the itch subsides and hope the neuropathic pain does not return. Just wanted to put this out there in hope that someone can help me.
1310035 tn?1305621642 ve found works best now, is a combination of Gabapentin and Diazepam. It does not get rid of the pain completely, but I assure you, I could not function properly if I was going it alone. Good luck, I know how hellish it is living with the constant foot pain.
Avatar f tn We tried nerve blocks on the lateral branches of all of the sacral nerves and the top of the sacrum. This stung like lemon juice on a cut - I think because of the rupivicaine (caines tend to sting and hurt me). The nerve block was not effective. I had been on gabapentin and stopped thinking it wasn’t doing much. In hindsight, I am not sure of the timing and whether it had been keeping nerve pain at bay. Now I am on Lyrica 150 mg a day moving up to 300 mg a day.
Avatar f tn I am asking if there is another neuropathic pain medication to use as an alternative to Gabapentin. I agree that the Gaba helps with nerve pain, however the side effects are scaring me. I plan on discussing this with my PM but want to know more before going in.
Avatar n tn Hi, please narrate your exact symptoms along with diagnosis, although drugs effective for neuropathic pain are carbamazepine, gabapentin, venlafaxine, amitryptline, tramadol, pregabaline etc. For more information visit http://www.patient.co.
Avatar n tn Shoulder replacement surgery recovery is painful and difficult, so the earlier you can make post surgery pain treatment planned the smoother your recovery period will be.
Avatar f tn The most essential aspect of treatment is to identify the underlying reason and to correct it whenever possible. However, the long-term result will depend upon the nature of the neuropathic pain problem at diagnosis that how poorly the nerves have been damaged. Since nerve tissue can take many days to regenerate, it is likely that your pain will improve over time or might reduce completely.
Avatar f tn t feel good taking it, so I switched to its cousin, pregabalin (Lyrica) and I did just fine with years of taking it. Both drugs almost overnight stopped the severe pain in my lower spine, so if pain is still your issue, then pehaps Selma's thoughts would work for you.
Avatar f tn I've experience with Vicodin and gabapentin (aka: Neurontin). The former is a narcotic pain killer that generally makes you feel "distant" from the pain. The latter is an anticonvulsant/anti-epileptic also used in pain management, particularly for neuropathic pain. Its mechanism of action involves suppressing the formation of new synapses between nerves (not by activating the GABA receptor, as was previously thought).
1983221 tn?1333506185 Lyrica and Neurontin (Gabapentin) are in the same class of drug and have similar side effects profiles.
Avatar f tn Well, I took a Vicodin and it didn't get rid of the pain. At least not during the first hour, although the time between the pulses of pain got longer. But at that point I fell sound asleep! I mean totally zonked, for 9 hours. Me, the insomniac extraodinaire! I know Vicodin doesn't last that long, but maybe it enabled me to get to a level of sleep that began to touch my deep fatigue, even exhaustion, and nature took over from there. I hope that's what happened, anyway.
Avatar n tn The continued follow ups with the oncologist as well as all the negative tests are all comforting, in the sense that the cancer is indeed silent and has not returned. This present symptoms of pain may be a long term consequence of the treatment such as surgery, or if previously she had radiation (these two interventions can really cause unavoidable damage to the nerves causing neuropathic type of pain). An ultrasound of the area may determine if this is really a seroma (fluid collection).
