Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol side effects forum

toprol

Avatar n tn Acebutolol is a beta-blocker with instrinsic sympathomimetic activity, so it tends to not slow the heart rate as much. Hyoscamine is a vagolytic, and is often used to treat nasuea. The drug has some side effects, however, like dry mouth and constipation. A small minoroty of persons have what some refer to as "vagally-induced afib". Some well-respected EPs don't think that it is a real condition (I am not in this camp).
443862 tn?1238003039 Sorry Flycaster305 but I couldn't disagree more. I'm on Toprol and have had simililar issues including SOB and near syncope and the panic comes after the symptoms not before. The "panic attack" is the most over-relied on explanation in medicine. Far too often we just accept this **** from out health professionals unquestioning and "live with" the side effects. My average blood pressure was 140/90 and on 25mg/day it often in 88/58 and that is TOO low.
Avatar n tn Per the instructions that came with the prescription it says to take exactly as directed (which is daily) because of serious side effects (heart attack, stroke). it's basically just to help calm down my heart rate. the bottle says "take or use exactly as directed. do not skip doses or discontinue" so now i'm nervous to use it if i feel that i need it.
Avatar f tn So, my cardio put me on 50mg of Metoprolol and gave me 1mg Ativan to take as needed. Well, the Metoprolol was hell getting past the side effects, but I did it just to not have my heart pound so hard and loud out of my chest. I used less and less Ativan as time went by. I still had some palpitations (rare) and some occasional "thuds" in my chest. I was told this may happen DUE to the Metoprolol. I was also told to by my psych to take 20mg of Prozac.
Avatar f tn how was it you stopped after five years? your cardio said you should stop? What happened next?
Avatar f tn //www.rxlist.com/proamatine-drug.htm Does your daughter take other meds? Some drugs, like Florinef, can cause low Potassium that can in turn cause twitching and spasms. Have you talked to your doctor? Sorry if I'm not of much help. BTW- It is great that your daughter is able to exercise on a regular basis. It might not cure her POTS, but at least it prevent any worsening from inactivity. There are a few mums on this forum with POTSy children.
Avatar m tn I am 38 year old.I was diagnosed of high BP(170/105mm/hg). I was prescrbed metoprolol 50mg and amlodipine 5mg. I have been taking this medine for a year. I have been regularly checking my BP ever since. It comes to 130/75mm/hg within a month. But Still I am taking the same dosage. My worry is : Is metoprolol and amlodipine safe to take?Since I am 38 only what would be its long term effects. That is taking the drug for over 30 years? Finally whether the dosage may be changed? Please help.
443862 tn?1238003039 I removed the atacand myself last Sunday and this past week have felt great. I do smoke, metoprolol has the side effect of cold hand and feet, very, very true and it said even more so in smokers. Anways, better than a racing heart! My pulse is now nicely in the 80s, having come down from 103-108. The only time that I was dizzy was when i was 80/50 with both meds. Now ont he met on it's own, not dizzy at all.
Avatar f tn it is not a really big deal. Very common, lots of data available, fairly few side effects... There are other meds which you don't go into so lightly. Flecainide, sotolal, tikosyn, amiodarone... When I see some of these on my pt list of meds, it screams there is a problem- that simpler solutions couldn't fix. If you haven't tried the simpler ones yet, it is definitely a better place to start.
Avatar n tn Some workouts are better than others and some will produce dizziness afterwards. Will the side effects of the beta blockers abade? Will I be able to regain my energy level and exercise tolerance? Is weight gain a common side effect of the medication? Is ablation a good option if the beta blockers continue to produce adverse effects and what is the success rate for PAT's? Thank you so much. I have learned so much on this forum.
Avatar f tn Hello everyone. I had sexual side effects from taking Metoprolol Tartrate. Are there any BP meds that I can take that do not cause these effects? I have heard of some that I could speak to my doctor about. But I wanted to ask here to see what advice I get from this forum. Thanks so much.
Avatar m tn Hey guys just wanted to ask the forum what you guys feel with metoprolol about two hours before your next dose (around 12 hours apart; I do 12 hours personally but we are told to take it whenever we want with a good gap in-between). I was also told the medicine is stored in you if it is necessary to stop medication for a day for another health procedure; which is strange.
Avatar n tn I had a list of over 68 side effects from this drug ! most were untold side effects ,that doctors never tell you about -or pharm companys will list. best to slowly ween off the med - and see if your (good) doctor will help you out in doing it ! it took me 6 doctors, before I got help with weening off the med. but thats due to the hmo I was with. Good luck and take it slow and easy !
612551 tn?1450025775 It certainly can't help whereas drugs can have debilitating side effects and cauterizing and scarring the inside of your heart with catheter ablation is permanent. What type of arrhythmia do you have? How many years have you had it?
264156 tn?1206990594 Now to my question (man I like to ramble) what are your side effects to beta blockers. Or if you are on calcium channel blockers feel free to chime in as well. How long have you been taking the meds? Are they still as effective as when you began taking them? Did any of the side effects get better/worse over time? Thanks so much you guys, I can't tell you how much I love this forum!!!
Avatar f tn Side effects of metoprolol and diltiazem: http://www.medhelp.org/drugs/metoprolol/show/3810 http://www.medhelp.org/drugs/diltiazem/show/3734 Both (see above links) list the following as a serious side effect: "nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)." Hopefully you're not having low-grade fever and jaundice along with your abdominal pain and abnormal stools?
214864 tn?1229718839 com report, consumers have experienced increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and ectopic beats, as well as side effects such as nausea, dizziness and headaches when switched from Toprol XL to Metoprolol Succinate ER. ConsumerLab.com noted that the Sandoz formulation of the product is different from Toprol XL and dissolves in a different manner.
Avatar n tn Known side effects of Coreg include fatigue, sleep disorders, dizzyness, and GI pains. (See for example SK Beecham site on Carvediolol). My wife uses Coreg and suffers from all these side effects. What are good counter measure drugs or non-drug therapies? What are most severve and cautionary drug interactions with Coreg? Thank you.
Avatar f tn on 2/4 to ask if my dose could be lower, i had just came from the gym like 45 min ago, he said my heartrate was 107 and said he could not lower it, he did check it again and it was 97 but still refused to lower it. I couldn't handle the side effects so on 2/5 I started my morning dose back to 25 mg 2 times a day. I went to the cardiologist on 2/6 he said my heart was strong. I gave him my whole scenario he said he would wean me off the metoprolol.
Avatar f tn Thank you for your response and interest in raising questions with answers that may shed some much needed light on this dilemma. The Metoprolol and Norvase were introduced in "08" along with discovery of a congenital kidney disorder that was corrected by a surgical procedure ultimately in about 6 months. During the 6 months lead up to the surgery I began with 25mg 1 x per day of Metoprolol with no decline in BP.
Avatar f tn I absolutely hate the side effects from the meds. I have vision disturbances, no appetite, no energy (although even though I was a gym rat, my energy level had been really bad the past year or so leading up to this), chest tightness, and increased anxiety. When I was on a higher level of metroprolol (before I switched to the name brand toprol) I had great bouts with depression and severe cloudy thoughts. Also right now it is hard for me to fall asleep before 4am no matter how exhausted I am.
1903111 tn?1333216654 50mg of Metoprolol twice a day is medium sized dose, but unfortunately it's often ineffective. One of the side effects of the drug is bradycardia, and of course lowered blood pressure. It was totally ineffective in preventing SVT in me, but it definitely help in converting them. SVT feels scary, but is usually harmless for short durations. If you have it for hours on end, it's a good idea to seek medical help. Do not fear it, and don't let it control your life!
257552 tn?1404606154 I still hope for the day when something either surgically (safely) or with medicine, with little to no side effects, can be done for these. It sounds like you have to have 20,000 or more of these things before ablations should even be considered. I think this number should be less given the loss in quality of life many of us suffer from dealing with this benign condition. Thanks for the forum.
Avatar f tn I switched from a B- Blocker (metoprolol) after 4 or so years of therapy, to a calcium channel blocker (Norvasc). I went cold turkey per my MD's instructions. I have been having reflexive tachycardia since then, and my BP has been around 150/100. How long should I expect these side effects to last, or how long should I wait till I see my physician again? Will the tachycardia ever go away?
Avatar n tn I have tried one a long time ago,(1983) and didn't like it because it made me feel sluggish. Could you comment on a beta blocker that you think is ok, and maybe has few side effects? If there is such a thing. Also ,I just started taking one each, potassium and magnesium pill a day, on the suggestion of this forum. Could be too early to tell, but it seems to be helping. Is this phsyco-symatic on my part or is there something to this as well? Thanks.
Avatar n tn I do get vivid dreams (not nightmares) and some tiredness with Toprol XL but those are already accepted side effects. I returned the generic to the pharmacy and exchanged for the real Toprol. Well considering they have the same co-pay amount and my insurance premium shot up to $500/month, why would I settle for anything less??
Avatar n tn Aside from bleeding I assume drug has side effects??? Bleeding is the main side effect. aside from issue of metal in your chest, once implanted successfully does pacem presence effect morbidity for an otherwise healthy person? it carries a slight risk of infection. This is risk is highest around the time of a device change (2%). Otherwise it should not cause any problems. I hope this helps. Good luck.
Avatar f tn You have posted concerns abou this drug many times in this forum and the only thing I can say now is to let your doctor know all of this. If this is a big problem for you there are other alternatives to Metoprolol. I have taken this drug (100mg) for over 8 years with no problems. Your doctor wiould be the best person to confide in.
378273 tn?1262101221 just my guess. The bad news with higher does (I take 200 mg a day) are the side effects. I think it causes some of my unwanted dreaming (only when sleeping ;>) ). I too resist the Class III drugs, I have not even tried Flecainide (Sp?). I'm still hoping in my case the improvements in size reduction of my left atrium will make me again respond and hold NSR from electrocardioversions. Have you ever tried a electrocardioversion?
Avatar n tn okay i'll give you my two cents worth point by point....metoprolol or more commonly known in the U.S, is Toprol.....one of the most common side effects is just that....tired, fatiqued, etc. My doc and i made the decision to change out to antenolol and i take a low dose once a day and viola no side effects at all at .25 love it....
