The methadone shojuld only be used for a period of 5-10 days MAX. In my opinion he would be better off tapering a dose from oxy's or another opiate base pain pill - if he does the methadone for very long he will just trade the frying pan for the fire. I would say that you should do more homework by reading this forum... and congrarulations for sticking with your husband and trying to help. You can help but its a rough road.
This was a little too much because I was a little drowsy and euphoric sometimes and with the Oxy I had really bad urinary retention that made it difficult for me to sleep. So I moved to Methadone 10mg every 8 hours. I like the pain relief from this but like I stated today (which is day 3 of being on Methadone) I was very drowsy and slightly confused all day.
I’ve been prescribed 10mg methadone x2 daily and 2weeks ago my dr changed it to 10mg OxyContin x2 daily. I now have double vision and am listless and cold. I have several methadone left from my old prescription. Would I be able to change and take the methadone instead of the OxyContin until I can talk to my dr on Monday. I was told the change was due to something from my blood work showing up wrong?
Is it a good idea to replace high doses of oxycontin, that you have tolerated for years, no highs, pain relief, but still quite a bit of pain, for methadone, forever? My dack surgeon says the switch will kill me and would have to be done in the hospital over a long period, and even then, he refuses to even entertain the idea, and he has been my back dr. for15 yrs. (I had 2 back surgeries in 1995 abd 1996 and no relief after last surgery, except I could walk again.
Not until peoples ins. refused to pay for these did that stop. No need for them unless your tox screen comes up positive for something that you are not suppose to have in your system. This test will show up everything in your system including the amounts taken. I don't know anything about tylenol pm showing up a positive for methadone but if you didn't take any then nothing to worrry about, test will show up neg.
Okay, So to sum this up quickly I was on oxycontin (up to 200-400mg a day) for 3 years, and I went on methadone. My Babys dad was also doin this with me...anyways he got clean and wanted me off the methadone, so I stopped it Cold turky, but was too ***** to go thru that ****, and started using pills again ( I even got him back into and he was like 6 weeks clean....*sigh*) anyways, I DONT WANT TO go thru the hell I KNOW im facing.
well yes I do agree that it is trading one addiction for another, methadone or suboxone are much healthier for you as well as it being monitored by your doctor or a clinic. it is possible to quit an opiate addiction without things like methadone or suboxone but it is difficult and has a high failure rate. some people can do it and only do it once and stay clean for the rest of their lives while others like myself need the help of these medications to fully kick the habit.
I was on Methadone for 3 years as a pain aid and subsitute for Oxycontin. Having been through withdrawals from both Oxy (initially w/o methadone) and methadone(actually switched back to Oxy) I have to say that the methadone withdrawal was far, far worse. It lasted for over 6 months where I felt lathargic and had no appetite. I would break out in gallons of sweat and felt horrible. That was even with a lot of oxycodone in me.
I agree with Motye51, why get on subs after you get out of rehab? They will detox you once your there so there is no point at getting on subs. Subs weren't created to be a long term solution anyways and a lot of people end up abusing them.
In terms of your question and methadone detox...Im not sure because everybody is different. You said you've only been on methadone for 2 months so hopefully you will feel better faster than someone who has been on it for years.
Just wondering if Methadone can be used indefinately for chronic pain control????
Have a friend that was just put on it and am worried that they may have to be on it for the rest of their life...
And, if you are on it for chronic pain control.. do you have to increase your dose or does it just stay the same???
Methadone doesn't really "block" anything. It doesn't have a eupohria (that I've ever experienced). What I guess it does to help heroin addicts is stops the withdrawls and since they are taking an opiate already, they don't get "high" off the heroin because they've already got something in their system. (If that makes sense) There's a lot of info out there about it.
From what I've seen of fentanyl detox and my own year long, slow methadone recovery, I think fentanyl and methadone are only different in dosage. The full synthetic nature and side effects of both methadone and fentanyl make them very close tie for the worst detox ever. As I vomit and shat myself in my yard from methadone detox, I remember wishing I was a heroin or any other kind of addict. Anyway, mute point, but wanted to share.
After reading all comments, I am very scared to begin trying to withdraw from my pain medication, I am a 40yo mother of 2 teenage children. I am on 80mg oxycontin/20mg methadone/25mg amatryptiline and Oxynorm 10mg as required. I suffered a severe car crash in January 07 leaving me hospitalised for >4 months. I am now trying to reduce my pain medication not thru choice but through govt regulations that say after 12 months I should no longer be on these medications.
tested positive for methadone at the pain doc today. Ofcourse i denied it due to the fact that , honestly, i wouldnt even know where to get it, let alone TAKE it.. currently on 4 diabetes meds, oxycontin,neurontin, BP and cholesterol meds . all of which they know about and have documented. After i tested positive i was in shock and was looked at as scum9 even though i've been there for 3 years with NO PRIOR PROBLEMS. I seriously have no idea what happened.

I agree with Nick in the respect that you should not use that term for Methadone. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by an Oxycontin mixture? Yes, Oxycontin is a very good and effective pain reliever and I also think Methadone is as well. The difference between the two is one will give you the euphoric effect and the other does not. I feel that the Methadone is probably a better drug for relieving pain but that's my opinion.
