Lexapro weight gain treatment

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro weight gain treatment

lexapro

Avatar n tn I have been on Lexapro for about a year and a half. I have gained close to 20 pounds and it's still climbing. I was very concerned about weight gain and my doctor told me Lexapro was "weight neutral". I initially lost a few pounds and then a slow but steady climb. I try dieting and exercise but do not loose any significant weight which leaves me no incentive to continue trying. I am 5'2 and now about 145 pounds which of course really depresses me.
Avatar n tn In the meantime, hang in there! Now, regarding Lexapro....I have a question. Does it cause weight gain? I've heard that it does and I've been wondering about that. What side effects, in general, have some of you who are taking it experienced?
Avatar f tn In 1997 with in 6 months I gained 50 pounds lost my sex drive ( I was just 31 then) and even tho it HELPED with my Post Pardum depression with my new born.....the weight gain DEPRESSED me so bad. I was 123 lbs when I got pregnant and by the time my son was 3 months old I had lost 55 of the 80 lbs I gained while pregnant...but I surpressed my PPD for 6 months as i thought I WAS just loosing my mind.....
Avatar f tn I have also had an EXTREMELY difficult time loosing the weight I gained with my son who is now 6 months old and I work out over 2 hours a day, EVERY DAY and hardly eat anything!!! This weight gain has also added to my depression. As of now; I am no longer going to take Lexapro. Maybe I will add Yoga to my 2 hours at the gym and hope for the best.
Avatar n tn Somehow tonight (that's why I was searching out lexapro and weight gain)I just mentioned the lexapro to my trainer. They advised that they have several clients on lexapro that are having the same trouble with weight gain. They seem to think that it may have something to do limiting the control we have over our intake. I just know I've been spinning in circles.
1033596 tn?1252523193 I asked my doctor about other alternatives to the Lexapro, and she suggested Welbutrin. It doesn't cause weight gain and has even been shown to create a bit of weight loss. Plus, it curbs cravings for food tremendously. I was a big nighttime eater and I've pretty much kicked the habit. Good luck with everything!
Avatar n tn I switched from Lexapro to Wellbutrin because of weight gain and high blood pressure and have had wonderful results. Blood pressure is normal again and I have lost weight. Hopefully this medication will work for you too..
Avatar n tn I am now off the effexor and just on the wellbutrine, but the weight is not stopping at all. I have put on 31 lbs. since October when my weight hadn't change more than 10 lbs. in 6 years. I have also put it 0n so quickly (20 lbs in the first month) that my skin is so tight and hasn't really been able to stretch as much as it needs to to accomodate the increased weight.
Avatar f tn I'm not sure of the weight gain as I have not gained any weight and I did not have any thoughts of killing myself. Actually quite the opposite. The only think I am dealing is vivid dreams at night. My doctor is looking into possibly changing my dosage. He thinks it may be a bit to much for me. Good Luck!
Avatar n tn Has anyone figured out a way to reverse the weight gain effect? I have been off SSRI's for at least 3 to 4 months. I took Effexor for 3 months, lexapro for 9months and Paxil for one month. I feel fat! Has anyone else experienced this? Will I eventually lose the weight or will I have to go on a strict diet and stay on it?
Avatar n tn i also am thinking of getting off welbutrin. i know that it is every other day to get off the med but how long to you go every other an also when do you start every 3rd day. how long does it actually take to eventually dose down to nothing.
Avatar n tn After avoiding zoloft, I was walking 9 miles a day, but, w/o any weight loss.... In the end, Zoloft reduced depression/anxiety, weight gain started to create anxiety issues. In the long term, zoloft seemed to be quite ineffective.
Avatar n tn is published online, in part, and explains what is happening and how to reverse the weight gain without changing or interferring with your current treatment by using nutritional supplements that help your body replenish the hormone leptin. Leptin assists your body balance and control your weight and appetite. Antidepressants and some other meds disrupt the production of this vital hormone. Check it out. It is really very simple once they explain it.
Avatar f tn Some are worse for it than others but as monkeyc says there are steps you can take to help keep the weight off. I will say that depakote is known for its side effect of weight gain, I didn't gain a lot on it but it was more than I wanted. It is often called depa-bloat! HOWEVER, it does depend on your dosage and your metabolic rate. On a lower dose I gained no weight at all. Depakote can increase your craving for sweet things and a lot of the weight is water based as with lithium.
Avatar n tn In the first couple of months it seemed like I could eat anything with no weight gain, but then things changed. I tried to to lose the weight and really watch my calories, but I have come to the conclusion that this stuff acutally changes your metabolism. I wonder if this is permanent, as the weight just won't come off 2)Every morning I have the "runs", sometimes I use the toilet 4 or 5 times 3) delayed ejaculation.
Avatar m tn I've been on Lexapro for nearly 4 years. I got on the medication after experiencing a situation at work that really upset me at the time. I had mood swings that caused anxiety at the start of work to depression in the afternoons that lasted until bedtime. At bedtime I would take Klonopin to control the built up anxiety over planning for my next work day. Now that I have been retired since 2012, I realized that I'm no longer working and the medication should no longer be necessary.
Avatar n tn I have been on Welbutrin for almost 4 months now and have noticed weight gain of about 8-10 pounds and I'm not eating anymore than I use to. I'm wondering if the 'weight-gain'/'weight-loss' issue is affected by whether or not people 'need' to lose weight before they start taking it. I consider myself to have a fairly high metabolism and I can maintain my weight quite easily. I know what causes me to gain weight and what I need to do to lose it.
1190024 tn?1264692022 Hi - I have a pretty extensive background, but will try to make this as short & easy to comprehend as possible. I'm a 33 year old single mom who has struggled with "mental issues" for many years. At the age of 15 I was placed on Prozac for depression. Over the next 15 years I tried Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and several others.
Avatar f tn Anyway, I sat do your research, talk to your doctor about your concerns, if you deem it possibly worth it try it. I did not have any major weight gain on lexapro, although I did watch my intake of unhealthy food and calories until I adjusted. Now that I am on my current combination I have actually lost weight and feel better about my body than I ever have.
Avatar n tn but if my dreams get any more intense or i gain any more weight ( gained 25 lbs already), im going to become even more depressed. i need to get out of this hole. i hate being on medication.
Avatar m tn Only noticible side effect was tiredness but it never bothered me too much. I had no weight gain or sexual side effects. I loved it and wish it still worked.
Avatar f tn I understand why they don't want to put her on Remeron because of the fluid retention and weight gain that often goes along with it, but I wish there were some sort of guarantees. I know that is unrealistic...I wish I knew more about this medication other than some swear by it and other hate it. That is always the situation with almost all drugs for mental health. She has to have another bronchoscope biopsy because they are uncertain what is going on in her lung but it doesn't look good.
Avatar n tn However, Lexapro is also supposed to be one of the MILDEST of the SSRI's and also have a decreased chance of causing certain side effects, including the decreased sex drive as well as weight gain, which seems to be one of the most prominent side effects of individuals taking SSRI's. I am not sure of the exact percentages of getting those particular side effects on Lexapro, yet I know they are almost twice as unlikely on Lexapro than per se Paxil or even Celexa.
Avatar n tn I've decided to get off Lexapro myself due to weight gain, cost, and previous problems with this drug. I quit taking them last week, hoping to give myself the extended Thanksgiving holiday to get through the worst part. Brain zaps are very bad...almost every 10-15 seconds. I feel as if I'm a 5 year old who just took a tripple espresso followed by 4 caffeine pills. Jittery, confused, shaking...if this is what cocaine addicts go through, I feel sorry for them.
Avatar f tn I had a great experience with Zoloft about 2 years ago but back then I didn't know about the side effects so I didn't look for them at all. I gained alot of weight with the Zoloft so of course I don't want to gain anymore but supposedly this is good for that as well. I'm about 95% sure I will start tonight so in keeping with a positive attitude, I will post in a few weeks to let everyone of my "great experience with minimal side effects if any"!!! Best of luck to everyone.
Avatar n tn I am at my witts end and i was wondering if you have heard of anyone getting accupunture for anxiety, i read about it on the net but dont really know how true it is, if its not too expensive i think i will try it out.
Avatar n tn I have been taking anti-depressants for over a week now and they have stopped my anxiety, well lessened it at least, but I'm really worried about the side-effects of taking SSRI's; for example weight gain and sexual dysfunction. Has anyone experienced these? What I'm saying really is do the positives outweigh the negatives.
