Lexapro weight loss or gain

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro weight loss or gain

Avatar n tn I'm right there with you, eat anything and not gain an ounce. no loss or gain, maybe 3lbs loss if any. I am soooo going to be in trouble when i'm done with tx and keep eating this way! sweets and spicy food taste odd, but I see it, I eat it. Must know I am a person who overate on OTC appetite suppressants, lol. Only a few times I had stomach trouble, is now fixed with yogurt and pineapple chunks.
616534 tn?1233240097 It's really weird. Many have posted here saying that their SSRI caused weight loss, while others report weight gain. It's hard to say. I asked my Psychiatrist this same question a few months back. He said that while Tri-cyclic and Tetra-cyclic meds (older antidepressants) can cause weight gain that SSRI's like Lexapro do not. Who really knows. I'm not sure if that riddle will ever be solved.
Avatar n tn I remember my doc telling me one time that less than 2% of people have TRUE, unexplained weight gain with Lexapro. The other ones that gain weight, it's a simple calories in versus calories out deal (that was true for me). And even that number is suppose to be low. I know a couple people who never gained a pound on Lexapro (LUCKY). I don't know about cymbalta or wellbutrin, hopefully you can get good responses from those with experience!
Avatar n tn research will say Lexapro will not cause weight gain and only 10% noted weight gain. BUT, they are wrong. Look how many of us are writting in. It's really sad. I have another friend who is losing her mind over the weight gain and it's further depressed her. I took myself off the Lexapro a week ago. I am having some withdrawl symptoms but I just think about the weight gain and I am happy to go thru this period of withdrawl. I am 5 foot 6 and weighed 116 for years.
Avatar n tn Weight gain is not inevitable, and probably occurs in less than 30% of cases. Its mostly from increased appetite, so if you exercise and use portion control, you should not have a problem.
Avatar m tn I am considerably active for a college student, and have noticed a healthy weight loss of about 8-9 lbs. since I started eating healthier earlier this month. Will Lexapro cause me to pack on pounds? I am very good at curbing my cravings and haven't had any junk food in a long time. I am determined to not gain weight, but will it be inevitable regardless of my eating habits? Or can it be avoided?
480705 tn?1208232150 Tastes just as good xD I am on Lexapro but it is a very small dose, so idk if it will affect me much, and im not eating a bunch of junk like i used to, so i dont think i'll have a huge problem with weight gain. So far i havnt noticed any weight gain (ive been on it for about two weeks)And i probablly wont be taking it very long,if it has no effect on my condition. But if it works than i'll be extrememly happy lol.
Avatar f tn They start feeling better, eat more normally and gain weight. Same with weight loss, some folks eat when anxious or depressed and when they feel better, that compulsion is less and they lose weight. This is part of the weight loss and weight gain that you see with antidepressants. And why any same antidepressant can cause a different weight reaction (gain, loss or neutral) in different people who take it.
Avatar n tn For me, I believe that a side effect of Lexapro was weight gain. I believe that the weight gain is due to the fact that Lexapro has affected my thyroid. I have done some research and I believe that Lexapro will mess with your metabolic rate. I am in the process of having my thyroid tested again in a few weeks. I have been off of Lexapro for almost two weeks. I have lost almost ten pounds. I don't know if this is a side effect for others, but I do believe that my thyroid is kicking in.
Avatar m tn Dawn, Everybody handles different drugs differently. There's no sure thing about which will make you gain or loss, even though they advertise this or that. But, if you can handle Wellbutrin- that doesnt make you eat. (But be careful cause it causes some people to feel wired out). Also they say Cymbalta doesnt make you gain- however it made me feel Stoned and tired. So- that's my experience.
Avatar n tn I have been on Welbutrin for almost 4 months now and have noticed weight gain of about 8-10 pounds and I'm not eating anymore than I use to. I'm wondering if the 'weight-gain'/'weight-loss' issue is affected by whether or not people 'need' to lose weight before they start taking it. I consider myself to have a fairly high metabolism and I can maintain my weight quite easily. I know what causes me to gain weight and what I need to do to lose it.
Avatar m tn Some people complain about weight gain while on SSRIs like Paxil and others even complain about weight loss. What has been really helpful for me is ensuring that I watch what I eat and exercise regularly. Remember, quite often, or weight gain has more to do with our lifestyle than what we are taking sometimes in my experience. Do you exercise regularly and watch what you eat? Keep us posted!
Avatar m tn Yes, Lexapro can cause weight changes, so it can increase your weight. Usually people are able to maintain a healthy weight because the drug will not cause weight changes in all individuals and because most people affected by weight changes are able to maintain their weight through diet and exercise. If you have been really conscious of your image, then this can be just your personality or it can be an obsession.
Avatar n tn I gained a lot of Paxil, but didn't gain much at all on Lexapro or Celexa, whatever that means. Didn't gain at all on imipramine, a tricyclic. The side effects are very individual, and those who are prone to weight problems without the meds will have a harder time. Cymbalta is a more stimulating drug than ssris, so maybe you will not have this problem as much with it.
Avatar n tn After avoiding zoloft, I was walking 9 miles a day, but, w/o any weight loss.... In the end, Zoloft reduced depression/anxiety, weight gain started to create anxiety issues. In the long term, zoloft seemed to be quite ineffective.
Avatar n tn Do they make me hungry therefore you eat more and gain. Or do you just gain weight without changing any eating habits? Same thing with losing. I am way too scared to gain weight right now. The pharmacist said there is no weight-gain side-effect but everywhere I look on the internet says otherwise.
Avatar n tn I was looking back on my weight loss chart and saw that within 3 weeks of starting lexapro each time, I had a significant weight gain. I went from 175 to 185 the first time and then continued to gain despite following the program and exercising. When I went off the med, the weight began to drop and I made it down below 200. I started it again in February this year and within 3 weeks, here came another 10 pounds and it's been steadilly going up ever since.
Avatar m tn My big question is when are the doctors going to stop telling everyone that they do not gain weight on antidepressants, I have been on lexapro now for 2 yrs, and have gained 25 lbs, I watch what I eat exercise, dance, etc... and the weight will NOT come off. My doctor tells me well you are are at the age of premenopause and at that age, that you are going to gain weight, well I am getting tired of hearing it.
Avatar m tn Hi there! These kinds of medications definitely can cause either weight loss or weight gain in some people. Your weight gain was pretty dramatic, so like you said, I'm sure the Lexapro was only one factor. Let me ask you this, have you TRIED any other medications? If not, I would recommend that you do that first. Zoloft would be one that I would personally recommend asking your doc about. Like Lexapro, many people have great success on it, and it's easily tolerated by most people.
Avatar n tn weaned to 10 mg. As much as it has helped for the attacks I gained alot of weight. Very little weight gain then all of sudden it was there. I am 5' 5" started on Lexapro at 135 pounds now up to 170 lbs. I have now weaned myself off two months ago and doing well as for anxiety but the weight?? How long does it take for the meds to get out of your system to start losing?
1033596 tn?1252523193 I asked my doctor about other alternatives to the Lexapro, and she suggested Welbutrin. It doesn't cause weight gain and has even been shown to create a bit of weight loss. Plus, it curbs cravings for food tremendously. I was a big nighttime eater and I've pretty much kicked the habit. Good luck with everything!
Avatar n tn I asked if it causes weight gain and he said no,. But since he said the same with lexapro, I am concerned. I can't afford to gain more weight. I'm 5'2" and up to 140 now and nothing fits. Its making me more depressed! Am I more likely to gain weight with the Effexor again? I really wish there was something that could work without these side effects. When I was on Lexapro I felt the best I've ever felt in my life but the side effects were hurting my marriage and self esteem.
Avatar n tn if I can be switched to Wellbutrin, what do you all think about that change? I have no serious side effects other than the weight gain on Lexapro, however, the weight gain is making me feel worse than I did when I started the medication.
527657 tn?1214055450 i always weighed between 135 and 140 and now im 162 and very unhappy every time i step on the scale its another pound or two im getting off it and i hope to see some weight loss within a week or two.
Avatar n tn However, I got weight gain, not loss, plus a sensitive stomach. Which is why the weight gain is weird, given I am having difficulty keeping food down sometimes. No not pregnant! Just my luck, I'd get the weight gain! I'm giving this a few more weeks, then I'm going back to au naturel and probably hot sweats until I can find a holistic alternative. The side effects are depressing enough!
Avatar m tn I have never used diet drugs or any weight loss type OTC meds. I take multi vitamin everyday with B Vitamins 12 and 6 plus Omega 3 etc. I just do not know what to do to keep the weight down. Yes, I am very active and I don't binge. I allow myself 1 day a week to eat what ever I want, but not over eat. In other words, I really don't eat alot. My kids worry that I don't eat enough. I can't use the "fake sugars" because I have an allergy to them..
