Lexapro withdrawal weight gain

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro withdrawal weight gain

lexapro

Avatar n tn I have been on Lexapro for about a year and a half. I have gained close to 20 pounds and it's still climbing. I was very concerned about weight gain and my doctor told me Lexapro was "weight neutral". I initially lost a few pounds and then a slow but steady climb. I try dieting and exercise but do not loose any significant weight which leaves me no incentive to continue trying. I am 5'2 and now about 145 pounds which of course really depresses me.
Avatar n tn orignally was given to me for anxiety as a replacement for zanax which is addicting so i was told... it was ok..but made me gain a ton of weight..i was shocked that that! i thought it was my eating habits or hormones..couldnt figure it out , but after reading many posts on this I see almost everyone remarking that they had rapid weight gin as well.. I spoke to the pharmacist and he said i should of weened myself properly..
Avatar f tn Everyone is differant Shelly, while weight gain is a side effect of Lexapro it does not mean that You're going to gain weight. It is a side effect because it has happened for some people. Just keep eating healthy and getting exercise and You should be fine. Weight gain can be scary for most females however it is really good that You're on this medication and on the road to recovery. You need to wait it out and see unfortunately, people are too differant.
Avatar n tn All I'm reading about lexapro is weight gain! Are there any people who have not experienced weight gain? My doctor just put me on 10mg of Lexapro a day for anxiety. I've worked hard to get into the shape I'm currently in (lost 30lbs last year). I workout regularly, exercise, and eat healthy...but I'm really concerned about gaining weight. If you've been taking this drug and haven't experienced any weight gain...I want to hear from you!
Avatar f tn In 1997 with in 6 months I gained 50 pounds lost my sex drive ( I was just 31 then) and even tho it HELPED with my Post Pardum depression with my new born.....the weight gain DEPRESSED me so bad. I was 123 lbs when I got pregnant and by the time my son was 3 months old I had lost 55 of the 80 lbs I gained while pregnant...but I surpressed my PPD for 6 months as i thought I WAS just loosing my mind.....
Avatar n tn I know 3 people that take Lexapro that do well on it. Although, they do report weight gain and no sex drive. Also, they have tried to stop taking it but are unable to. To me, this sounds almost like a heroin addiction. What I experienced was entirely different and horrifying. Doctors are too prescription happy. People have different physiologies, for example: allergies, I once had a girlfriend who could die from eating a few peanuts. Another friend: bee stings could kill him.
Avatar n tn For me, I believe that a side effect of Lexapro was weight gain. I believe that the weight gain is due to the fact that Lexapro has affected my thyroid. I have done some research and I believe that Lexapro will mess with your metabolic rate. I am in the process of having my thyroid tested again in a few weeks. I have been off of Lexapro for almost two weeks. I have lost almost ten pounds. I don't know if this is a side effect for others, but I do believe that my thyroid is kicking in.
Avatar n tn when they figured out it was just depression about 2 years ago, i was put on lexapro. i gained a lot of weight, felt apathetic...as in i didn't want to do ANYTHING because i didn't care, had absolutely no interest in sex, and was always very fatigued. not liking how i felt, i stopped cold turkey about 10 days ago. my main problem was dizziness and extreme anger....both of which have subsided into crying spells and sadness.
Avatar m tn I was on it (10 mg) for almost 3 years and just stopped taking it. (Tired of the weight gain and feeling like a zombie.) I took a half pill for 2 weeks then forgot to take it a couple of nights and decided I was done. Had terrible withdrawal symptoms the 4th and 6th days - nausea, vomiting, headache, insomnia, lack of concentration, basically in "la la land". It's been one full week and this is the first day I'm feeling pretty decent.
Avatar n tn Somehow tonight (that's why I was searching out lexapro and weight gain)I just mentioned the lexapro to my trainer. They advised that they have several clients on lexapro that are having the same trouble with weight gain. They seem to think that it may have something to do limiting the control we have over our intake. I just know I've been spinning in circles.
Avatar n tn I've decided to get off Lexapro myself due to weight gain, cost, and previous problems with this drug. I quit taking them last week, hoping to give myself the extended Thanksgiving holiday to get through the worst part. Brain zaps are very bad...almost every 10-15 seconds. I feel as if I'm a 5 year old who just took a tripple espresso followed by 4 caffeine pills. Jittery, confused, shaking...if this is what cocaine addicts go through, I feel sorry for them.
Avatar m tn Too often, it's just adding insult to injury, after a drug that once held some promise fails to really help with one's struggles, or it makes them even worse. The worst withdrawal for me was Lexapro, cold turkey. This was initiated by my doctors while I was in hospital for a serious mixed episode. It was pretty uncomfortable, to say the least, although a lot of the symptoms (such as extreme agitation, restlessness, off-the-charts anxiety) could have been caused by my mood episode as well.
Avatar n tn that i was'nt happy with the results, excessive weight gain, sleeping for 12-14 hrs. He then put me on 40 mg/day for a week. Result was more sleep and a feeling that anything that happened was ok. I decided i needed to get my life back. I need to be motivated again and be able to be satisfied with 6-7 hrs of sleep a day. By the way, the reason for Lexapro was because I was told I lacked patience and was suffering from anxiety from the result my 401K losing 40% of its value...
Avatar n tn if I can be switched to Wellbutrin, what do you all think about that change? I have no serious side effects other than the weight gain on Lexapro, however, the weight gain is making me feel worse than I did when I started the medication.
527657 tn?1214055450 Have a close friend on Paxil, she did phenomenally on it, but like a lot of others, gained a good bit of weight. She determined that her mental health was more important...so she decided to stay on the Paxil and be VERY loyal to a strict diet...then after some weight came off...she maintained by eating much healthier than she did. She has taken off prolly about 1/2 the weight she gained, and has held steady where she is.
Avatar n tn I switched from Lexapro to Wellbutrin because of weight gain and high blood pressure and have had wonderful results. Blood pressure is normal again and I have lost weight. Hopefully this medication will work for you too..
Avatar n tn I am now off the effexor and just on the wellbutrine, but the weight is not stopping at all. I have put on 31 lbs. since October when my weight hadn't change more than 10 lbs. in 6 years. I have also put it 0n so quickly (20 lbs in the first month) that my skin is so tight and hasn't really been able to stretch as much as it needs to to accomodate the increased weight.
Avatar f tn I believe, and is not to supposed to create a weight gain - please help me. the weight gain of 30 lbs has casued knee pain, back pain - my 5'4 frame can't carry 200 lbs at 46 years old.
278591 tn?1190129706 Lexapro does help with depression and it did make a big difference in my life but the weight gain associated with it wasn't worth it to me because that made me bummed out too. So I started taking Wellbutrin and my Lexapro was cut way back to barely any but the combination of the two seems to be making a big difference and works better than either separately. But that is what works for ME personally. Not sure how it would work for other people.
Avatar n tn I am going through the weaning period right now too. I have been on lexapro for 8 years and the sexual side effect and weight gain was really straining my marriage, so after a few attempts to switch, the dr put me on Wellbutrin at 150mg/day for now and is taking me off of the lexapro. I just went from 20mg/day to 10mg/day of lexapro and have been taking that for about a week now.
Avatar f tn Also, my family doc said that Lexapro doesn't have withdrawal symtoms and that is why he prescribes it...ha! It amazes me how uninformed most docs are...I'm going to see a psychiatrist about the "tapering" next week. I'll keep you posted...
Avatar n tn I am a manager of a very large store and it has been pretty hard keeping it together. I gained 25 lbs on lexapro, I ate less, and exercised more yet gained weight. Any tips?
Avatar m tn Thank you all for your feedback and experience..... the Lexapro actually made me gain weight very quickly in a 1 week period..... So since I posted last My doc took me off the lexapro and put me on Effexor because effexor acyually covers all of my depression and anxiety symptoms...
Avatar f tn I have read that Stevie Nicks had a really bad time with Klonopin and she said it caused her major weight gain. This CANNOT happen to me. Is it true Klonopin causes weight gain? Anyone experience this?
Avatar n tn I went off the Paxil because of weight gaim-45 pounds. The withdrawal was very slow and gradual as per my Dr. I did join weight watchers and the weight came off very easily. Thank heavens. BUT the panic and depression returned and now a year later after my last Paxil I have just started to take Lexapro. I do pray it is much different than the Paxil as far as weight gain and feeling "zombie-like with no feelings". Good luck with your decision as to what to do.
Avatar f tn Wellbutrin can also cause weight gain, and sometimes Lexapro doesn't. But you might be going through a withdrawal from wellbutrin. Wellbutrin is for depression, it can cause anxiety, although since yours didn't come for six months it's hard to say. But if you're going to be on a drug, with your symptoms, better lexapro than wellbutrin, though you could try therapy and natural medicine first. Just feeling stress and sadness is no reason to go on medication.
803456 tn?1237924339 I have tried to lose weight for years and learned that lexapro is notorious for weight gain and hindering in its loss. Can I expect to be able to lose some now?
