Lexapro how it works

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro how it works

lexapro

Avatar f tn How long were you on Lexapro when you first took it? It can make your anxiety worse for the first week or so, but then that goes away as your body starts adjusting to the medicine. It can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 weeks for the medication to really feel like it's working. I'm currently taking 20mg of Lexapro and feel like it works for me. I'm also using Xanax (.25mg, 3 times a day, if needed).
Avatar m tn Better to be safe than feel like crud. If Lexapro works well for you, I would see no reason to stop taking it, since obviously you have symptoms of anxiety and depression when you are not on it. Hope you feel better soon.
Avatar f tn I had no appetite on Lexapro and lost ten pounds! It depends on the person and how it affects your chemistry. I couldn't sleep or eat on it!! You have to give it a try and monitor how it affects you. Just today I purchased a journal just to log these affects because sometimes my memory and thinking is clouded from the depression. For my next DOC appt I will read this log to my doc. I'm trying my fourth med within a year , I'm now trying Wellbutrin.... We will see......
Avatar f tn Thanks. I get nervous over doing all the meds. I wodner sometimes if it dosn't make it worse. I was hesitant but my phychartrist and family doct say Seroquel added to Lexapro is a good combinaiton for I seem to be chemically imblanced. So I'm going to give it a try. I've ried so much of th e antidepressants to no avail. I wish I coud hit on a combination that would kep the terrible feeling away. Im finding it hard to go out and I must for I work.
Avatar f tn I still deal with anxiety and depression daily and I am on 15 mg of lexapro. It is better but I still am dealing with it. Can anyone tell me what antidepressant works best? Is wellbutrin better for anxiety? If anyone has had bad anxiety where you get the chest heaviness and shortness of breath and let me know if your taking antidepressant and if it takes the anxiety away. I have considered buspar because thats just for anxiety but I don't know anymore.
Avatar n tn You really want to get new meds cause the withdrawl gets worse! I've been there. It wasn't pretty.
Avatar f tn The above post doesn't appear accurate to me -- Pristiq is not usually prescribed as an adjunct to another antidepressant. It is the newer version of Effexor, is very strong, is a very stimulating antidepressant so isn't usually used if anxiety is the primary problem unless all other meds have failed to work, and can be very difficult to stop taking.
Avatar m tn I sincerely think you're way over thinking this, which is causing more anxiety for you. Look at it this way, you've already started taking the Lexapro, so the decision has already been made. Now you have to commit to sticking with it for a while to give it a chance. I'm telling you that if the Lexapro works for you, you'll be very thankful you stuck it out.
Avatar n tn Okay, got it. Is your doctor aware of the Propranolol use? Sometimes when see different doctors, communication of what all we are on doesn't happen as it should. So, that's first. That the doctor is aware of all meds you currently take both prescribed and OTC. SSRI's can be used with beta blockers generally. You will find patients on both without issues.
Avatar f tn Hey Lori, I'm taking L-tyrosine as well but it's in my supplement called 5 htp which has other minerals in it and is supposed to be helpful for fibromyalgia and mood. I think it may be helping me some too so if you find it's working stay with it. good luck!!
Avatar f tn But whether a drug will work or not depends on so many factors -- how well your liver allows it into your system at all, how well your brain responds to it, whether your brain is tapped out for now on ssris, etc. You just have to try and see. I personally switched for Lexapro, which wasn't working, to Celexa, which also didn't really work for me either, but the side effects were different so obviously something different was happening.
709686 tn?1277432159 I understand that lexapro had a ton of side effects (i have taken it and had to get off it) so maybe switching meds isnt the worst idea. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Hi! I have never taken 20mgs of Lexapro.... I have only taken 10mgs (for about 1 month now). I was just thinking that if I can use the 20's by cutting them in half to get 10's, I can save some money now that we have no insurance. I started slowly on the Lexapro and am slowly reducing the Paxil I am taking that no longer works. Down to 4mgs of Paxil and up to 10mgs of Lexapro. Thanks!
Avatar m tn Hello and welcome! Your doctor prescribed you a common regimen. The Lexapro is an SSRI antidepressant that will take some time to become effective (typically 4-6 weeks, sometimes up to 8 weeks, especially when starting on a low dose as you are). The Xanax is a benzodiazepine, anti-anxiety medication that is being Rx'ed to treat the symptoms of anxiety while you're adjusting to the Lexapro, and waiting for it to become effective in reducing your anxiety.
Avatar f tn ve been on lexapro 20mgs for about 5 years. the doc has me down to 10 mgs lexapro for 1 week then stop it completely. my concers are. i know nothing about this med. and do you think i'll have withdraws from the lexapro.
505677 tn?1263948093 I will see her on the 7th so maybe can figure out something else to try or just continue to get samples?? I know that the lexapro works for me so would prefer to not mess with it but maybe something else would work better??
Avatar n tn 6 weeks post pardum after having my son i started with it all again, im back on lexapro now but things are slow going this time, as pregnancy changes so much. i wish you the best of luck, keep trying. panic disorder is very hard to fix, especially overnight. it may be that they just have not found the right treatment for you. it can be fixed. hope that helps. good luck.
Avatar f tn I was on Lexapro for six months and then came off. My panic attacks returned so I returned to the Lexapro for a year and then came off again. My reasons for coming off were my own not wanting to be on a permanent drug that I may not need anymore. I am very sensitive to medicine. Usually the lowest effect dose offered is 10mg. I would cut it in half for 5 and that was all I needed. Within a few hours of missing a dose I would begin to have side effects, so these were my reasons for stopping it.
1390847 tn?1344657468 I don't know how long you've been on Lexapro but it takes 4-6 weeks to feel the full effects of it. We are respond differently to these types of medications, so what works well for one, may not for another. I take Lexapro and have for several years with excellent results and no side effects.
Avatar n tn I doubt it. Escitalopram is the generic of Lexapro. I asked my psychiatrist if the generic works any differently, as every now and then you hear of generics not working quite as well. She said there is virtually no difference in the drugs, except for the fact that one is a brand name and one is a generic. However, I recently went through the same thing as you. I'd been on Lexapro for eight years and did so well on it, and out of the blue it stopped working.
Avatar f tn depending on your condition i would start off on 10mg a day and see how that works for you. if your not to sure then do some research about it. and also research the dangers of xanax.
Avatar f tn Valium works more quickly, but is short term. If Lexapro works it will work for a long time. How long it takes to work depends on you; it might not work at all. People don't metabolize all drugs equally well. Yes, it can be hard to stop, so can valium. Valium is probably not encouraged for long term use. What works best is when talk therapy works, which isn't often but when it does it lasts longer than any drug and works more completely. And takes longer.
Avatar f tn t withdrawal symptoms from the Lexapro. Remember that none of these drugs is identical in how it works, and so switching from one to another, though most doctors and psychiatrists seem to ignore this, doesn't stop withdrawal from the old one necessarily. What this means is there's another possibility here that's interfering with you discovering whether Zoloft is a good drug for you if you can't tell what's new and what's old, so to speak.
Avatar m tn re committed to taking an ssri, why not see if it works rather than arbitrarily adding a benzo? If one drug will work, why take two? Prozac is known to be a more stimulating anti-depressant, but it's the easiest of the ssris to be on and come off of for most people, so it's a good place to start, but your reaction will be your own and won't necessarily match what any of us experienced, as we all metabolize these meds somewhat differently.
Avatar f tn told him about the brain fog not being able to focus etc. i asked if it was the lexapro and he said he doubted it. but didnt say anything about what might be causing it. he knew i was taking only 5 mg of the lexapro ans asked if i thought i could go up to the 10. i told him i would give it a shot. but i want to know what it is giving me the brain fog??? it is sooooo hard to focus, to stay in a conversation, to remember anything!! its frustrating. it makes me anxiuos etc.
Avatar m tn t last all the time like an antidepressant does when it works. I would have tried the Lexapro longer to see if the side effects went away, but Prozac tends to be a bit stimulating and is often not the best for anxiety sufferers, but any of these meds takes time to work and see if it will become tolerable and they all have side effects and are all hard to stop taking once your brain is used to them.
