Common Questions and Answers about Kidney stones diet prevention

Avatar n tn I have had a 5mm kidney stone and now have about 5 smaller ones. I have started medication for prevention and been told that I need to change my diet to avoid purines & oxalic acid. I am also hypoglycemic. In researching what I can/cannot eat, I am getting conflicting information. Different websites list the content of these materials at differing amounts. The USDA will say a type of food is at 1 level and another will say something totally different.

Avatar m tn Thanks for the response, 33 years, bloody hell, a few years has destroyed me, I had a double hernia op that felt way less painful than kidney stones for me, I have noticed chest pains all across the top of the chest that sometimes spread down both forearms, on the front of my throat and the top of my head, I'm starting to wonder if that's all connected to the kidney stones since I just happen to have had the kidney stone pain not long after the onset of these symptoms.
Avatar n tn Hi, How are you? Kidney stones usually pass out through the urine stream with in 48hours. But this depends upon the size of the stone. A 4mm stone has 80% chances of coming out spontaneously, where as 5mm stone has 20% chances. Stones more than this size usually require treatment. Medical management includes calcium channel blockers, alpha blockers etc. Surgical treatment involves shock wave lithotripsy or percutaneous nephrolithotomy or open surgery.
Avatar m tn Dietary changes may help prevent kidney stone formation if you are prone for it. Prevention strategies for kidney stones include - Increasing your daily fluid intake and taking the recommended daily allowance of calcium. Increase your fluid intake to the point where your urine volume reaches 2.5 litres a day. This may mean drinking up to 3 litres a day, if you live in a hot, dry climate or if you are involved in strenuous physical activity.
Avatar n tn What diet and prevention measures can be taken for medullary sponge kidney patients related to infection or stones? This discussion is related to To take Fruits is bad for Medullary Sponge Kidney... Is it true ??.
Avatar f tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Therapy depends on the size of the stone. Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for stones with a size upto 2 cms. Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy is done for stones larger than 2.5 cms. Sometimes a combination of the two can be done. Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. In the meantime follow preventive measures to prevent stone formation.
Avatar f tn I have tried the diet, meds, and lot of water over the years and I still get stones. I am finally going to see a Dr at the university here in Chicago. But before he will even see me I have to complete 3 24hr urine tests, with blood work after each one. I start my 3rd test Sunday and will FINALLY be able to make my appointment on Monday for him. They have a clinic and prevention center there, so I am really excited to be able to see what they have to say. I will keep you posted.
82861 tn?1333457511 They can become elevated if there is a urinary tract infection, a kidney infection or a prostate infection, or the elevations can be caused by damage to the kidney (either kidney disease or kidney failure). A urinalysis with a microalbuminuria test will determine if it is an infection or kidney failute. Lyme disease can commonly effect the kidneys also causing kidney failure. So if it has not been performed yet I would have your dog's urine tested and perform a lyme disease test.

Avatar m tn These substances can create small crystals that become stones. The biggest risk factor for kidney stones is dehydration. Kidney stones may not produce symptoms until they begin to move down the tubes (ureters) through which urine empties into the bladder. When this happens, the stones can block the flow of urine out of the kidneys. This causes swelling of the kidney or kidneys, causing pain. The pain is usually severe. Kidney stones are common.

Avatar f tn I concur with Spotjeff. My natural doctor says: "Most kidney stones are composed of calcium oxalate. Magnesium makes calcium more soluble in the urine, and inhibits the formation of calcium-oxalate crystals. One study examined 55 people with reoccurring kidney stones, who were given 500 milligrams of magnesium daily for up to 4 years. the study showed that 85% of these people remained stone0free compared with 41% in a group of people who did not receive magnesium supplements.
Avatar n tn I have been treated for kidney/ureteral stones 3 times in 4 years by cystoscopic removal and ESWL. Two stones have been sent for analysis. They were composed of calcium oxalate and calcium carbonate. I am not a big dairy product eater. In fact I get far less than the recommended calcium intake for women. I am a 34 year old female. My urologist seems to not be very interested in further testing.

Avatar m tn People I know what I am talking about I have had kidney stones/kidney disease since 1965. Your doctor is wrong most kidney stones can be treated: the goal is to stop or slow down the formation of them. This is accomplished through metabolic testing... which many be done by a nephrologist in some parts of the US. Once it is determined what is causing the stones to form and the composition of them..
Avatar f tn I read an article from 2010 (I don't have the link, sorry) that talked about oxalates causing general abdominal/pelvic inflammation (and therefore pain), not just increasing the risk of kidney stones. Can you confirm this? THANK YOU for your help!!
168348 tn?1379360675 Didn't your physician recommend a calcium-controlled diet because of that? I'm not really sure with the kidney stones that you should be taking anything with extra with calcium in it - you don't want to increase the amount of stones you've been making or make existing stones bigger. I wouldn't want to risk it anyway - I understand the pain is excruciating!
Avatar n tn Kidney stones Causes Gout is caused by having higher-than-normal levels of uric acid in your body. Your body may make too much uric acid, or have a hard time getting rid of uric acid. If too much uric acid builds up in the fluid around the joints (synovial fluid), uric acid crystals form. These crystals cause the joint to swell up and become inflamed. Not everyone with high uric acid levels in the blood has gout. The exact cause is unknown. Gout may run in families.
