Common Questions and Answers about Kidney stones treatment and diet

Avatar n tn Through testing in June, I know that I have 5 small stones in my left kidney and the kidney has hydroneph... can't remember the word at the moment, but it means enlarged/swollen. My uric acid (1480) and oxaclic acid levels were high. I am now on allopurinol (sp? the bottle is not with me). I was told to change my diet to avoid purines and oxalic acid. I got a very short list from the doctor and was told to do some research on the internet.

895634 tn?1283992810 Kidney stone often is hereditary so you should ask if any relatives also had kidney stones. Taking pain killers for the pain is not the proper treatment for kidney stones. Taking a pain killer to avoid the pain is not good medicine. It is masking the underlying condition which can be a serious one. A hepatologist is not an expert in kidney disease. They should refer you to a Urologist. A Urologist specializes in diseases and conditions of the kidneys and urinary track.
Avatar n tn This one involves pus in the kidney and surrounding sack. His right kidney, where all of the stones have been, is down to less than 25% output and may have to be removed. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this and what the outcome might be?
Avatar n tn There is really no "diet " for kidney stones. If a person takes very high doses of vitamin C, kidney stones have been known to develop. To help prevent possible kidney stones is to drink the daily-recommended fluid amounts of 8+ glasses (8oz or more) of water so your body is properly hydrated. Your sister needs to see her MD to be treated for the existing kidney stones. Best of luck.
Avatar n tn Sugar and salt can also increase the excretion of both calcium and oxalate in the urine, you should definitely limit, if not completely eliminate, sugar and refined carbohydrates from your diet, and cut back on salt. The other type of stones are uric acid kidney stones. Cutting back your intake of animal protein while increasing bulk and fiber in your diet can help prevent them from forming.
Avatar f tn I have many stone patients who protest that their diet is "healthy" and they still get stones, but the reality is that even lean "healthy" proteins like fish and chicken are pure protein and are broken down to uric acid by the body. Uric acid stone form for three reasons, and three reasons alone: 1. Low urine volume 2. Low urine pH (too much acidity in the urine) 3. High urine uric acid.
Avatar n tn What would the probable main cause of Kidney stones in a 50 Year old female, considered to be in general good health? What treatment should be considered once the stones are gone?
Avatar n tn I just found out I have a 5mm kidney stone and I was wondering how big that really is and what it could b compared with so that I can "see" what is causing me such pain.
Avatar f tn No i don't have any other pain conditions. Just stones and kidney infections as a result of the stones. I take antibiotics about 2 weeks out of every month to keep the constant infections at bay which i can't imagine is good. Im assuming he refferred me to the pain mgmt dr because he's afraid of prescribing pain meds on such a regular basis. I can understand it but its still not easy for me because I'm uninsured and can't really afford to add another dr to the mix.
Avatar f tn How unusual is it for the stones to be in this meaty part of my kidney and since they are still in my kidney aren’t they just going to continue to grow larger? Are these stones causing damage to my kidneys? They don’t seem to be causing any blockages based on the ultrasounds that have been done, but I still have had frequent flank pain and blood visible in my urine prior to the surgery. Is there any hope that I will be able to be stone free and prevent more stones?

Avatar n tn kidney stones develop by dehydration, weight loss, exercise and diet, if they are not treated they can grow and just cause more and more pain if you dont get them treated the pain may go away but it will come back believe me i have had them myself and the treatment is absolutly nothing well worth having it doent hurt its just lazer treatment which sounds scary but isnt its just like someone is tapping in the same spot repeadedly for about an hour and thats it.

924255 tn?1243881663 Last monday I had orange and cloudy urine. Now I have major kidney pelvic pain. They did an ultra sound but found nothing. Right before the ultrasound I peed and it was really painful. I constantly feel like I have to pee and I am absolutely exausted. The pain is so bad that I can't work at my new job. The doctors think that it is sand that I past through and they are keeping me on antibiotics for 4 more days with novo naproxin. My sister has interstitial cystitis.
Avatar n tn Since then, the pain has continued and my urologist cannot find any stones in my ureter through x-ray and IVP. He believes that the small stones in my kidney cannot be causing the pain and the stone in my ureter must be gone. He is now telling me to have my ovaries checked. I do not believe for one second that it is anything but a kidney stone. You ALL know the pain. It is the same as it has always been.
Avatar m tn Hello, i am a 20 year old student and recently found that i have two kidney stones. I believe they have both moved from my kidney to my bladder and was wondering how long it takes to pass them through my urine once they are already in my bladder. These stones are 1mm and 2mm and also i was wondering to what extent the pain is going to be when i pass them?
Avatar m tn First off, I'm not doctor, but I do have extensive personal experience in the kidney-stone arena. As far as I'm aware, kidney-stones and creatinine levels are, for the most part, mutually exclusive. Again, I'm not a doctor, so it's best to ask your Nephrologist when you see him/her. As for your 4mm stone, tell your Urologist that you're nervous about its implications, and that you'd like it removed.

Then I didn't met such problem.
Avatar f tn Hi, I also heard the same case of yours to my friend. For the kidney abnormalities annd/or kidney stones, those are the results of our wrong diet to the foods we eat. So natural cleansing and detoxification by 100% pure vegetable & fruit juice can help the treatment process and helps preventing kidney stones formation and prevent development of bacteria's and or cancerous cells.
Avatar n tn Having a consistant doctor to do this with is VERY difficult when you do not have insurance, that is why it is crucial that you keep your medical record up to date and make a written account of each of your visits and their outcomes, because you probably will end up NEVER being able to see the same doctor twice. A treatment plan consists of your diagnoses, a goal, drug therapy, lifestyle changes, and diet changes. 9. eat good food.

They did surgery to put in stint's to drain off the infection and they will wait about 2 weeks to remove the stones. The doctor said her body is just producing A LOT of stones and she'll have to change her diet and take medication to help stop it. Thank God they figured it out.
Avatar n tn Water intake may need to be greater in the summer and in warm climates. A diet low in purine (ie, limited quantities of liver, kidney, brains, sweetbreads, fish, poultry, asparagus, spinach, peas, and beans) may aid in lowering the total-body burden of uric acid and other purine metabolites." "The overall goal of medical treatment is to dissolve formed stones and prevent new stones from forming. Citrate or bicarbonate is used to alkalinize the urine.
Avatar n tn These agents aren't known to cause kidney stones. Most kidney stones in the US are caused by our diet which is rich in meat protein. Calcium supplementation does increase the risk of kidney stones. As far as the blood pressure goes, he should probably have his dose of the lisinopril reduced. Alternatively, there are other agents such as calcium channel blockers, beta blockers or Angiotensine receptor blockers that can also be tried. I would probably avoid diuretics at this point.
