Effexor and ptsd

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor and ptsd

Avatar f tn I have been on effexor for years and don't feel the least spacy or lost, just normal.
410475 tn?1262945967 i was on effexor for depression and bi-polar, for about 4 yrs. the first two were great. but, as with any drug, your tolerance builds up after awhile and you need your dose adjusted. my doctor had me on 300mg a day for a longtime. i believe that i was too medicated,( because he had me on wellbutrin also.) the only thing that i have bad to say about being on it, was the withdrawl from coming off of it. i was physically ill for a few weeks. and i also had the worst vertigo i've ever had.
Avatar n tn Paxil began losing effectiveness and after seven years, doctors tried new medications like Lexapro which was less helpful. Finally I began Effexor, then Effexor XR, then increasing the dose last year. Though depression bleeds through occassionally, (feels more like the blues than a dark suicidal hole), I think I'm doing very well on Effexor XR 150 mg. But I can not help but wonder .... Will I eventually need 225mg? What will it take after that?
Avatar m tn would not take lexapro and effexor together. for effexor withdrawal i take omega3 fish oil caps twice a day//benadryl as needed for dizzyness\\ b12 sublingualtwice a day\\st. johns wort twice a day// vitamin d3 twice a day ---ibuprofen(motrin) as needed for muscle pain. as far as i am concerned, i will never take a prescription rx. for anxiety and depression again. i also have ptsd. i am sticking to st. johns wort and omega 3 fish oil caps. both will treat depression.
Avatar f tn Hi I am tritted with Effexor for a year and a half now. first half year I took 150mg., and now a year of 75 mg. feels good and balanced. BUT for the last year I have gained over 20% of my body weight !! we are talking 14 kg... no changes in eating habbits or excercise habbits... it seems its started when I swiched from 150 mg to 75 mg... another strange symptom I have threw this past year - I feel hot preaty much all the time, including winter times when everyone feels cold...
Avatar f tn It seems like no one wants to sit down with me and help me find a way to manage all the physical symptoms of the drugs, withdrawing from the drugs and my PTSD. I used to run to help manage my insomnia and chronic pain but I started having problems with the ball of my foot about 6 months ago and haven't been able to run or even walk/hike much. I'm certainly feeling depressed but I think that, under the circumstances feeling depressed is normal.
Avatar n tn You will also be presented with Wellbutrin, which is not an SSRI, due to its safe profile and effectiveness, and also with Effexor (and perhaps other SNRI's). If there are contraindications to prescribing any of these medications then there is even a chance that you may be presented with a tricyclic antidepressant (such as Amitriptyline). All these medications have an incidental therapeutic effect on anxiety, but for acute episodes of anxiety, nothing works like a benzodiazepine.
Avatar n tn I do know that everytime you change your dosage there can be side effects. They usually go away within a few weeks. I have PTSD and that is why I am on effexor and I will be starting light therapy as well.
Avatar f tn My doctor old me that because these two meds work on different parts of the brain i was experiencing w/d from the Effexor- needless to say- I stopped the Wellbutrin and started taking th Effexor again. Now I want off all meds and am really not looking forward to the dizziness, crying fits, emotional outbursts and brain zaps. Here's to a hopefully short withdrawl!
Avatar m tn I have been taking various depression medications for about 15 years after being diagnosed with PTSD and Major Depression. I developed the PTSD in 1993. I'm a retired police officer, but I did my full 25 years and retired 2 years ago. My problem right now is that my anxiety is never under control, and a good analogy would be that feeling you'd get if you had to slam on your brakes to avoid running over a kid. I'm like that 24/7.
Avatar n tn PTSD involves depression. PTSD is a diagnosis, as is depression. Those with PTSD also have depression. I would say "No"...PSTD is NOT a symptom of depression. Sufferers will also experience isolation, anxiety, and in your particular case...vivid hallucinations, nightmares, and psychotic episodes. Perhaps you should talk with your healthcare provider and try an anti hallucenogenic (sp?) to help curb your visions.
Avatar n tn I informed both my primary physician and my psychiatrist. My psychiatrist took me off it and put me on Effexor, which I love. My heart rate is normal now and the chest pain is gone. Out of all the antidepressants that I have taken over the past 10 yrs for bipolar disorder (and there have been a lot), Effexor makes me feel normal and I am able to work part-time. However, you should have your blood pressure checked once a week while taking it, according to my doctor. I also take 1500 mgs.
Avatar f tn I am new to this forum and I couldn't help but respond to your thread about getting off medications, like Effexor as I can relate to what you are going through. Not long ago, I too was on Effexor XR and it took me a long time to come off of it. I tapered off over a period of 6 months, which is significantly longer than what is typcially "recommended". Even then, I was having withdrawal symptoms....a weird dizzy feeling mostly. Even lowering the dose by 37.
Avatar n tn Hi, I will like to find out if someone out there have or heard of my withdrawals proccess. I stoped taking effexor xr (was taking 75mg for 2 years and then just taper off to 37.5 for 1 week)in Feb 17. I did not have any withdrawal symptons right away. My symptons started almost 1 month to be exact (March 19). This was the same with paxil about 3 years ago (stopped taking 20 mg cold turkey. My doctor says that I probably have a very slow metabolism.
Avatar n tn Is this an effexor withdrawal effect (and thus will be lessened as time goes on) or is this my natural mood and behavior without effexor? I don't want to go back on effexor, especially if this may only be temporary, a lag i have to go through, but how long will this last? are such delayed mood effects from withdrawal possible? I'm currently not on any other mood affecting drug. Any insights would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn Then my anxiety/panic came back and I was put on Effexor XR. I have been on it since April, and so far it seems to be helping a lot. And i haven't had ANY side effects with it. So it just depends on the person and what kind of meds you can handle, if any. And it depends on how much you're willing to change meds until you find the one that works best for you.
Avatar f tn i have PTSD and i suffer from anxiety nightmares and flashbacks of what happen to me in the service also causes substance abuse i also have schizophrenia :)
Avatar n tn Hello...I'm new. Considering I can't seem to find *any* info about Effexor and what it does to the CNS - I've been on it since...November. And it's been working wonderfully for my anxiety and depression, but not being able to construct a sentence - verbally - all the time?? It's driving me crazy, and I dont' know whether this is Effexor, or me. I have some head trauma, I don't know which is which, or what's what for that matter. Any info would be seriously appreciated.
318307 tn?1193934917 i suffered a major breakdown/suicide attempt and hospitalization last year at this time for that reason and was diagnosed with mdd w/psychotic features and started on effexor xr - 150 mg per day once a day. i have since been in very effective programs for bpd (dialectical behavioral therapy), and have been taking much better care of myself and doing much better mentally and emotionally.
Avatar m tn (He is also OCD) Neurontin for a mood stabilizer, and Klonopin at night for sleep and it helps with anxiety/PTSD. We went through 2 years of other medication changes and he is still not free of depression. He is ok with mania unless he starts drinking, doing cocaine, excess stimulants and so forth. (I LEFT HIM REMEMBER) BUT the amazing thing is that with the first 3 drugs he lost his urge to steal.
Avatar n tn I have been on Effexor xr for 4 1/2 wks. It has done nothing for my anxiety and actually feel worse now agoraphobic. They had me up to 150mg which made me feel unreal and out of it so they put me back down to 75mg. I know its not right for me the side effects are too bad. My question is how to get off I am so scared of the withdrawl symtoms. I have had every s/e on it including confusion muscle tension dizziness insomnia agitation to name a few so will the withdrawl symtoms be worse.
Avatar n tn It had taken Zoloft in the pass and it lifted my mood. So I have been on Effexor XR 150mg and a starting dosage of 50mg of Zoloft for a week now (1 week yesterday). I was starting to feel better but it appears that side effects have now started. I awoke with a big headache this morning and I have been restless, nervy and on edge for most of the day. I guess the Zoloft is starting to build and I am now experiencing side effects.
Avatar f tn I believe my mind was protecting itself by keeping numb for so long. Now I'm no longer numb, and I can't handle the PTSD and depression it's caused. The ONLY thing I think could be of any help is a "peer mentor", someone who has experienced trauma and would be able to work with me to help me get to a place where I care and have goals again. Decisions are so difficult for me, and I don't have anyone to talk to or anyone that can help me with that.
Avatar n tn You hear only the bad and very little of the good. I took Effexor at 350Mgs a day for 4 years and in that time it gave to me 99% remission from my severe depression. I had to get off it and switch meds after 4 years because it slowly stopped working for me. This may not be the case with you. I am forever grateful for the 4 years of normalcy that Effexor provided me. Are there side effects?
Avatar n tn i have been on 225 of effexor and it has helped me alot but the weight gain has been horrible. i crave carbs and feel hungry alot. but i tried goin off the effexor and had bad bad withdrawls. i took my time too. any ideas?
Avatar f tn Well on welbutrin my anxity got very bad so I went to a walk in clinic and the Dr perscribed me effexor and a few XANAX to help while I wait for the Effoxor to work. I went to pick them up and could not afford the effexor. I dont want to get it if its going to hender my weight loss. He told me it helped people lose weight. From what I see on line that is not what people say. PLEASE give me your opinion. If I find out I dont want to risk gaining the weight back what do I do?
Avatar m tn I have been taking effexor & minipress for several months, and then yesterday my psychiatrist ordered a urine test to "check my levels" of the medicine. I did not think anything of it, but my sister, who is a nurse in family practice, said there is no such thing as lab monitoring for either of these meds. She said these are not controlled substances and has never heard of a test to check levels of this kind of medicine. Has anyone else on here ever had such a test for these meds?
432097 tn?1318552340 I have been taking Effexor XR for awhile now, and was given Lamictol to take with it to enhance it. I also have severe PTSD and am BP with depressive tendancies. I have hears horror stories about Lamictol (especially this Stevens-Johnson syndrome) and I was also wondering about taking Lamictol with HepC? It says on the pamphlet (the scary one), that if you have hepatic problems, don't take it. Anybody know anything about this?
1072787 tn?1255728071 Dare I say that I now take 5HTP and Black Cohosh to do the job of Effexor because this time effexor took my blood pressure through the roof? Happens to be doc approved since I tend to see one about every 3 months still, but there are some cases where these OTCs can be useful. Were it not for someone else on MedHelp mentioning sam-e for Effexor withdrawals I would never have found that assistance. Effexor is a nasty drug and although it can help some, it helped me WAY too much.
644382 tn?1223467606 I take B-12, C, folic acid, fish oil, and a multi-vitamin. I just want to know if the effexor is a good option for me... I need something that doesn't take all my energy. With everything going on, I just don't have that much energy left. I've always been active and enjoyed life. I participate in committees at work, and social events around town. I just don't have the energy anymore. I wake up, have my coffee, read email, and want to go back to bed for the rest of the day.
