how long have you been doing this? I am on 275 effexor and 150 long acting wellbutrin and my starch cravings do me in, So i will research if cymbalta could substitute for the wellbutrin which acts differently that effexor and the cocktail is otherwise acceptable. But if you know somethinghere about cymbalta v. Wellbutrin, I'd love to know.
Have taken paxil, celexa, effexor, xanax, and lexapro through the years but experienced weight gain of at least 40 lbs. My OB/GYN helped wean me off the meds this past spring but within the last month I have again started experiencing severe anxiety with bouts of depression. Family doc started me on Trazadone which just made me feel like a zombie and shortly after switched me to Wellbutrin 150mg daily.
I am in desperate need of answers. When I went into a deep depression last August, I gained 20 pounds in a matter of 3 months, and NOT from "just eating." I have spent the whole year trying to work it off - to no avail. I go to the gym, I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, I do some form of exercise at least 3 days a week, and I am taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin.
My doctor has now taken me off the Avanza at night and prescribed 15mg Reductil to take with the Effexor in an effort to perk me up a bit and help with the weight.
My own research, the pharmacists concerns etc are making me think that this combination would not be advisable.
As my sugar is also starting to be a problem, I did suggest to my doctor that perhaps metaformin would be a better aid to assist with the weight issue.
My husband das been diagnosed with depression and anxiety had been taking Effexor XR 75mgs or about 1 year however the side effects ie weight gain tiredness and loss of libido was troubling him. The switched to cymbaltor, due to high costs (even with insurance) of this medication is wanting to switch to somethig that is less expensive and that has a generic available. What about Wellbutrin or do you have any other suggeations?
All meds come with side effects. It's wonderful that we have them to help us but we could sure do with those side effects. Wellbutrin is different from Effexor, it's a stimulating med. I took Effexor myself and was sleeping way too much just like you. I think that's why your Dr prescribed the Wellbutrin, to give you more energy.
Are you only taking the Ativan once a day? If your still feeling agitated and irritable at this dose don't be afraid to tell your Dr.
Well on welbutrin my anxity got very bad so I went to a walk in clinic and the Dr perscribed me effexor and a few XANAX to help while I wait for the Effoxor to work. I went to pick them up and could not afford the effexor. I dont want to get it if its going to hender my weight loss. He told me it helped people lose weight. From what I see on line that is not what people say. PLEASE give me your opinion.
If I find out I dont want to risk gaining the weight back what do I do?
A while back, when I was on Wellbutran, I lost weight quite rapidly, and I could not afford to lose weight to begin with. Weight loss and dizzy spells are common side effects of Wellbutran.
My biggest concern is your mom getting through the Effexor withdrawal. She will get through it, but my heart goes out to her. Take care. Best wishes to your mother.
t know if Wellbutrin will work for my OCD, depression and weight loss. I see your post is from 2008. Are you still on Wellbutrin and how has your experience been? Does it help with your OCD?
As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above.
It is unclear why anti-depressants cause weight gain. Here are some possibilities:
• Overeating, as a result of depression, can cause weight gain, esp if the person had lost weight in the pretreated depression
• Most anti-depressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics are also anti-histamines.
I do have a diagnosis of extreme depression/extreme anxiety. So, anyhow, after trying Phentermine, (still hungry on that) I stopped that, and the other night I was watching public telelvision, and a Dr. Adnan was on and he talked of the 'brain types' of overeaters. I am a combo of impulsive/compulsive.
i have been using effexor xr for 6 or 7 years and now that i in menopause i have gained some unwanted weight and i read that wellbutrin or zyban will help with the weight issure....would this be an ok trade???
EtteBette is right ~ trust your doctor, give the prozac a chance, it may take time for it to begin working. Not all ssri's (one type of antidepressant/family that includes paxil, prozac, zoloft, effexor, etc.) make you in to a zombie.
Prozac is not a new medication. I know several people that are on it for years now with very good results! Just know that it may take 3-6 weeks to see an effect, and maybe even an increase in the dosage. Many people take 20 m.g.
) and that helped me get off of the effexor, it still took a month though. Now I am just on the wellbutrin and I am fine, no side-effects at all. Also, the effexor withdrawal symptoms did have nausea, headache, vertigo... as well as other symptoms too for me, so it sounds like it could be effexor withdrawal for you too maybe. Hope the withdrawal symptoms get better soon! I really like wellbutrin, I hope it works well for you too!
My daughter started going to phychiatrist(she just turned 18 she was on 40mg of prozac) he put her on valium 5mg,celexa60 mg and and 100 mg of wellbutrin what is this combination usually treat? She has some aniexty and depression ?Her hands shake after wellbutrin,but doctor said to try and see if it subsides after body gets use to it.Please let me know if this combination is used alot?
Have also just went from taking cymbalta and abilify to the effexor and abilify, but went off the abilify because of the weight gain. Dr wanted me to try wellbutrin and go off the effexor, but don't think it was working. Now I'm really confused on what works. For a couple days of being off the wellbutrin and on 150 of effexor i fealt great. But 3 days later i feel horible again.
I have been taking prozac and wellbutrin. Some Drs. say its ok and some dont. I have been going on my second week with no wellbutrin and am staying nausea all the time. I felt like the Wellbutrin was causing me to gain weight.
I close by sharing how I truly learned that these meds are VERY POWERFUL and can mess up weight. My husband goes on Effexor and 40 pounds come off. Now this is a guy who loves to eat and enjoy a beverage or two. He does get exercise but has no set daily routine as I do. He made no effort to take weight off. I cried when he shared this. Of course I shared this with a few doctors who thought he should be checked for physical problems. Well he was and he is in tip top shape.
