I then took Effexor and later ther Effexor XR. Effexor XR allowed me to live a reasonably normal life raising a child and having a career. For at least 3 years my depression has slowly gotten progressively worse. My counselor and I believe it is time to add an additional medication, possibly welbutrin or change to a different antidepressant. Currently I take 300mg of effexor XR. This is the same level I have taken for the entire time I've used effexor. I would like input and advice.
I am trying to come off my meds (wellbutrin xl 150 and effexor xr 75) as I would like to become pregnant this year. All my Dr.s say I need to come off the meds. My DR. has me taking my wellbutrin 150 mg once every 3 days and had me take 1 37.5 mg of the effexor for 5 days and no more effexor just wellbutrin. I am feeling tired, nausea and headaches I asume due to no effexor. Should I have been prescribed the effexor diffrently?
I have been on Effexor XR 150 mg for 4 years and due to the cost and effect on my libido, I have started withdrawal, first tapered to 75 mg for 30 days, now on 37.5 for 15 days, then everyother day, and to continue till I'm done. Well in talking to my pharmacist she said she has seen violent reactions when people stop suddenly.
My mood swings are terrible and I'm suprised my husband hasn't locked me up. I get angry, moody, incredibally sad.
I have tried weaning off the effexor XR a couple times and have gone into Panic Attack mode when I do. I only will get a panic attack maybe 2-3x a year, so I know that the medicine has helped (for 6 years), but I have to say that it definetly has decreased my sexual relationship with my husband (I have heard this is a common side effect). I have heard that lexapro or wellbutrin do not do this.
There really is nothing that needs being done about it.
It's no secret that SNRI drugs such as Effexor, Pristiq, and Cymbalta do have a higher risk of what is called Discontinuation Syndrome.
SSRI's can also be nasty buggers to discontinue. Paxil being one of many.
I hear a lot of people complain about antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome, but I never hear then speak of the flip side.

I suppose it would be best to add that I have taken Effexor XR on and off for the last 5 years, went up and down from 75 to 150. I have a love/hate relationship with this medication. It works better than anything else but coming off makes me a crazy person. Recently I have tappered it as my doctor requested, started the Wellbutrin and Metformin just as I was supposed to..
agreed, and we started the tapering process. Down to 37.5 of Effexor XR while starting 200 mg of Wellbutrin. Well, no problems at the 37.5. I was on that for a week. Then, I stopped the Effexor altogether last Thursday. So it has been 4 days. Still on Wellbutrin 200 mg.
OMG, when the heck are these w/d symptoms going to subside?? I am so dizzy, nauseaus, and I keep getting this "click click" in my ears all the time, lips tingling..
My experience was a little rough coming off the effexor, nothing physcial, just mental and I had also been on it quite sometime. If you are replacing it with the wellbutrin you may not experience the withdrawal symptoms. Do you know why the doctor wanted you to switch? The main problem I had was flu like symptoms.
I mentioned about switching from Effexor Xr 225mg (which on my own I lowered to 150mg) He said that Effexor XR affects two different areas of the body whereas Zoloft only affects one area. Now he mentioned NOTHING about keep taking the Effexor Xr in lower does while I make hte switch to Zoloft. Am I supposed to just switch right over to Zoloft and discontinue the Effexor Xr??
Wellbutrin has the least sexual side affects. I take 300 mg XR and I have no decreased sex drive therefore I'm thinking it is the effexor.
That's good to hear. I've taken so many antidepressants over the years. I even took Wellbutrin a number of years ago. I guess I didn't think it worked, or it gave me a side effect. My doctor's file doesn't go back that far or its in his archives! Anyway, recently, he decided to add Wellbutrin to my regimen of Effexor XR to see of that would help with my depression. I take Klonopin for anxiety (used to take Xanax XR for years, but felt it became ineffective).
i have never taken wellbutrin but my daughter does, i have taken effexor. for me the effexor was terrible, but some people on this site do very well with it. it made me extremly tired, heart palpitations, raised my blood pressure, jaw pain and many other problems. my daughter says the wellbutrin helps her depression but makes her anxiety worse so if you have anxiety you may have to take something for that on top of the wellbutrin. in my opinion, effexor is horrible, i hated it.
I have been taking effexor xr, 150mg for a long time now to treat my anxiety and depression. I also take ritalin and xanax. I had not had any significant side effects ever. Recently, my doctor put me on Wellbutrin and increased my effexor to 225mg per day. I have been on them for two weeks now and have noticed some side effects and don't know if its normal or if it is coming from the wellbutrin or increase in effexor.
I have cut down on my Effexor from 150mg XR to 75mg XR. I now want to quit completely. I have taken this drug for 10 years with no serious side-effects, but past efforts to quit have resulted in "Brain Shivers" and overall malaise. I have always gotten back on after only a few days off the drug. This time I want to stay off the drug. I am concurrently taking Wellbutrin. I would appreciate any help/support anyone can give to make this withdrawl process successful this time.
t take long for my doc to confirm my ADD-PI and he prescribed Aderral 10 mg to take once a day along with Wellbutrin XL 150. He said I might need a higher dose or switch to the XR later.
Has anyone tried both at the same time? I got the generic version of Aderral and surprised how cheap it was. Should this be taken every day or only when I have lots to do and need to concentrate?

The doctor I have been seeing wanted me to not only take 150mg of Effexor XR, but he wanted to add Wellbutrin 100mg twice a day. I thought this was way too much medication so I did not do this. I have been on 150mg of Effexor XR for about 2 years and feel it is way past time for me to be off of this type of medication.
I was on Effexor XR for a few months, but I couldn't take getting sick whenever I forgot to take a dose. My doctor switched me to Pristiq, which works the same way as effexor.
I haven't had any problems with weight gain on either of the meds, though. I've actually lost a bit of weight since starting pristiq. I've been on it for months and my depression and anxiety have been put in their place!
Your eating habits may have changed a bit.
Been on Effexor XR for maybe 4yrs and recently rec. venlafaxine instead via mailorder.
I assumed Effexor XR must have just gone generic. I have been on venlafaxine for about 3 weeks and just do not feel "right". Very tired- especially around 2-3 pm and started gaining weight again. Originally gained 30lbs until added Wellbutrin 300mg to the Effexor. Also my mind is not as sharp, having more headaches, bloated stomach and crabby.
I switched to Effexor XR about a year ago because Zoloft was not doing enough for my depression. I was and still am taking Wellbutrin XL to combat the sexual side effects. Shortly after I started Effexor my doctor also put me on Seroquel. So I have been on these 3 drugs for the past year. Last month my doctor suggested I up my dosage of Effexor from 150mg to 225 mg.
