My doctor told me that Effexor XR does not affect your weight and if anything it causes loss of appetite or weight loss, which I did read on the perscription label from the pharmacy.
Lately, I've been doing more research and all I am finding are blogs about people who have gained a minimum of 25 lbs!!!!!
Can someone give me a straight answer as to yes, it makes you gain weight or no it does not?
After trying a few different anti-depressants for my migraines, my neurologist decided to try Effexor. Within a matter of few, I began to experience side effects, including weight gain. When I questioned my doctor about this, he felt it was unlikely that Effexor was the cause. So, I assumed it must be other meds I was on and continued to take it. Well, the side effects, including the weight gain worsened.
I am in desperate need of answers. When I went into a deep depression last August, I gained 20 pounds in a matter of 3 months, and NOT from "just eating." I have spent the whole year trying to work it off - to no avail. I go to the gym, I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, I do some form of exercise at least 3 days a week, and I am taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin.
I've experience poop out with several SSRIs so I'm taking 3- effexor, wellbutrin & paxil. Now I am in a hugely stressful time (possible job loss & parent with terminal illness). I am having bad problems with depression - but I am also having bad short term memory loss, concentration difficulties and some word mixups- spelling like a 2nd grader in some instances.
This is very bad- I am really messing up at work.
My doctor has now taken me off the Avanza at night and prescribed 15mg Reductil to take with the Effexor in an effort to perk me up a bit and help with the weight.
My own research, the pharmacists concerns etc are making me think that this combination would not be advisable.
As my sugar is also starting to be a problem, I did suggest to my doctor that perhaps metaformin would be a better aid to assist with the weight issue.
I also gained weight with this drug and my bra size went up 4 sizes. I was on this drug for 5 years and it worked well with me but I didn't like the weight gain or size J cup bra I needed. I took myself off the drug but I did it very slowly over a 6-9 month process I finally got to once a month with the pill and was able to tolerate not taking anymore. Once I stopped the drug in a matter of 2 weeks I lost 4 cup sizes. Now I'm beginning to loss weight.
I too was on Effexor for over a year and put on approx 100lbs before the dr took me off. I'm on Cymbalta right now and one of its side effects is weight loss, so I've taken off 65 of the 100 so far. I'm not sure of the withdrawal since I took an OD and came off it in one nite. But otherwise I can certainly relate.
You are asking if there is an anti-depressant that is the less likely to cause weight gain than Effexor. As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above.

So , I have been on celexa for about 5 years and went off that because of my crazy weight gain.. Went on Effexor for about 6 months and I am gaining more weight!!! I have cut my calories, cut my sugar , went to a Nutrisionist , ate exactly how I am supposed to, exercised everyday, cardio and weights .. I have always been skinny ..
I have had trouble maintaining my weight since menopause. I lose weight very easily now. Over the last couple of years I have had a CT, MRI, and all sorts of bloodwork. My doctor is convinced it is just one of those things. Said she has a handful of patients that have the same thing after menopause. I take effexor for hot flashes, cholesterol medication and advair. I can't imagine any of them making me lose weight so easily. I was never heavy, but watched what I ate.
When a patent for a brand name drug expires, pharmaceutical company can make a generic form of the drug. Effexor patent expired in 2006, since then several generics are available. Those generics are usually cheaper but they must contain the same active ingredient(s), the same dosage form, at the same dose or concentration, and for the same route of administration. The generics are usually cheaper and can use different inactive ingredients and preservatives which can sometimes cause trouble.
I have been taking Effexor XR for years and I am in the process of weaning off this drug. I am down to 37.5 mg and am experiencing rapid weight gain and bloating. Has anyone else had this problem while withdrawing from Effexor? I have not changed my diet and exercise routine one bit yet still gain weight. Help!
t find out I was pregnant till I was 11 weeks when I stopped the effexor and was admitted for re-feeding via NG and IV lipids. Could the effexor and restriction been the cause of my sons conditions, or is it something that just happens? Or genetics? I have always been afraid to ask that question.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good anxiety drug other than Paxil, Effexor or Lexapro. I was on Paxil for years and it worked well for me but my doctor switched me to Lexapro which made me extremely sick as did Effexor. Anyway, now I am about to go back on Paxil because it was the only drug that really worked for me and didn't make me sick but I have one problem.
I agree because when was on Effexor XR my theraputic dosage was 300MGs a day.
Pristiq is (Desvenlafaxine) and Effexor is (Venlafaxine) that just goes to show you how much alike the two drugs are. In fact at the molecular level the two drugs are 99% exactly the same active compound.
You might ask why the makers of Effexor would release a drug so much like Effexor.
