Effexor vs ssri

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor vs ssri

effexor

Avatar n tn Hi. I'm on tamoxifen so I can't take any meds which inhibit cyp2D6 enzymes. I've been on almost ALL SSRI ( Effexor, lexapro, celexa, nortriptyline, fetzima, & viibryd) & my depression worsens with them (suicidal thoughts, etc). The only one that has helped is remeron but every time I've had to return to remeron I gain weight. I'm usually 110-112 and eat very well & workout almost everyday.
Avatar m tn In fact many people take an SNRI like Effexor, Pristiq, or Cymbalta along with an SSRI as a regular treatment. The two meds will not collide with each other. Thus, simultaniuosly tapering "SLOW" off the Effexor while ramping up the Zoloft is perfectly safe in almost every case.
Avatar m tn I have been using Cymbalta for alomost four years, I am very concerned that my Doc wants to start me on 40mg of Prozac when I have been on 120mg of Cymbalta. Can I have your thoughts about 40mg vs. 120mg and what side affects I will have to go though.
Avatar n tn The antidepressant included in tramadol is close in chemical structure to the antidepressant effexor which is generally accepted as the hardest AD to withdraw from, hence the difficulties many have getting off tram. The problem arises from the metabolites of both drugs which have long half lives making withdrawal a non-linear drawn out process.
Avatar f tn hi do u think that the prozac (snri) may not help or even not work as it's an snri and not a ssri like the effexor. what is the best ssri to have a try if the effexor didn't work for me. why would my doctor swtich me from an ssri to an snri if he knows it may not help with my anxiety. iv never been depressed just had a panic attack in 2008 which caused me to have sleep problems.and thats when i was put on an anti depressant which sum people think they shouldn't have done.
Avatar f tn m currently taking 150mg effexor xr after uping it from 75mg 5 weeks ago and have gone down hill over the last cover of days is that just my body getting used to the 150mg and i will get bk to being ok again or does this mean the effexor isn't working for me thats why iv been looking up other meds to try and have come across fluvoxamine which i think relates to my symptoms. any info would be great.
Avatar f tn in the case of Effexor (Venlafaxine) it is ok to start most SSRI meds (Including Paxil) without first tapering down on the Effexor. In fact many people take Effexor along with an SSRI med as part of their treatment. Effexor is different enough from Paxil that the odds of an adverse interaction is very uncommon. Now you would not be able to do the same with another SSRI like Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac, ect.
5203459 tn?1373367904 I've read that you cannot take this if you are on a SSRI, but Effexor XR is considered a SNRI. I just wanted to make sure before I start this regimine. Starting it to help come off of Tramadol.
Avatar f tn I tried Pristiq in an attempt to help with menopausal symptoms. I was (and am) on Effexor XR, and Pristiq is almost identical to Effexor XR. I think the only difference is in their molecules. I didn't find Pristiq any better (for me) than Effexor XR, so I went back to Effexor XR. I wish you the best of luck with it. I hope it works for you.
1770281 tn?1315399993 Yes, you should NOT go off Effexor, along with other SSRI/SNRI antidepressants. It's unfortunate patients are told they are not "addictive", but they are in a sense of our brain chemistry and neurotransmitters get used to them. Effexor and Cymbalta are hard to get off of. I have been on and off 8 different SSRI's over the yrs. so I have experienced these withdrawals.
Avatar n tn Hi clydo , yes , sweating profusely is a recognized adverse effect of Effexor. For more information check out the product information on the leaflet in the pack , or their website - there's a whole host of possible side effects.
Avatar f tn I had anxiety which got treated with effexor xr. I was on effexor for two years normal. I went to my psych and said that I am normal taper of seroxat and I want to be medicine free. He suggested me not to do that. On my request again and again he tapered off effexor. Last month I was on 50mg effecor and suddenly started to get all the anxiety symptoms back. The doctor put me on Zoloft 50 mg 2 tab day and 2 tabs evening starting from one tab and tappering off effexor plan.
Avatar f tn I'm taking SSRI with tramadol 100mg. Anyone have any advice about how this drug works?
Avatar f tn My own advice is to taper down very slowly on the Paxil if you want to stop taking it before taking another med. Effexor will not necessarily substitute for Paxil, so you could find yourself suffering Paxil withdrawal and thinking it's a side effect of Effexor, nor should you be taking both at the same time since that could lead to an overload of serotonin. Do you have a psychiatrist or a regular doc?
622511 tn?1373571503 s started a few hours later but I was in Bigeminy and Trigeminy and without a doubt in my mind, I am certain it was the effexor and NOT just a coincidence. If one has to be on an SSRI/SNRI (and god knows I tried them ALL) which one is LESS likely to affect the hearts conduction system? Does anyone know from their own experiance?
Avatar m tn I am not familiar with Effexor but I do know with any SSRI you shouldnt just stop cold turkey you need to taper off of it. I take Paxil and if I miss more than one day I start getting those brain zaps. Perhaps you can speak to him about tapering to eleviate your discomfort. Best of luck!
Avatar f tn I've been on Effexor XR for 3 weeks. One week at 37.5 , 2 weeks at 75 mg. I did take 112.5 for 1 day but went back to 75. My doc told me to increase to 112.5 when I told him it wasn't helping my anxiety and was making me shaky. Not sure why an increase would help, but he's the doctor. The increase made it all worse. These tremors are too much. He seems to think they will go away with time but I don't want to wait too much longer.
Avatar m tn I took Effexor for almost a year and stopped it last May. I had slight problem with erection, when I stopped it. However, around a couple of Months from stopping, I had serious soft erection and still wondering if this is due to Effexor or the stress associated with my work, which increased a lot in the last two months or me masturbating 4-6 times a week.
Avatar f tn at this moment I stopped the effexor and the doctor gave me cortisone because I have exams and it takes about 6 weeks for the effexor to kick in.. and it would have been too long.. the cortisone helps a little bit more on short term.. but in two weeks I'm gonna start effexor again.. I can't wait now that I have seen your post.. I have the same issues.. neurocardiogenic syncope.. pacing heart... high blood pressure.. low blood pressure.. damnn.. It's like going through hell..
Avatar f tn I wanted to try Zoloft but the doc was insistent on Effexor. He seems to think since my former ssri pooped out after so long that another one isn't the answer. I told him about my hesitation but he seems to think this will work. I plan to try it for another month. If it doesn't work I want off. He says after that he still wouldn't try another ssri but a tricyclic. I just hope this works. I'm tired of feeling like crap.
Avatar n tn I just tried Wellbutrin because I read that it had fewer side effects than others and may help lose weight (and I had just tried Cymbalta and Effexor and didn't like the side effects)...I was a little hesitant to try Wellbutrin since I had success with Prozac in the past, which works on Serotonin (like Zoloft) and Wellbutrin works on Dopamine (a completely different drug)...
Avatar f tn Certain drugs could be responsible like metoclopramide, prednisone, effexor, an antidepressant, paxil, an SSRI, wellbutrin, an antidepressant, Zoloft an SSRI and dextroamphetamine, a CNS stimulant. Consult a neurologist soon who will evaluate you for these symptoms and investigate these appropriately. Take care.
Avatar n tn Most SSRI antidepressants are considered safe and appropriate for interferon-induced depression and emotional lability. Are you currently on therapy for the HCV?
Avatar m tn I was on Prozac - 20 mg for about a year and it seemed to do nothing to help. Prior to that I was on Effexor - 37.5 mg for about 4 years. It seemed to do ok but I still cried every day, often multiple times a day. I am back on Effexor XR - 75 mg for about 5 weeks. I am still crying every day, often multiple times a day. I am in therapy twice a week. It seems like the drug is not working.
Avatar n tn Does Effexor xr promote weight gain or loss? Also, it is sooooooooo expensive, is there an alternative?
Avatar m tn I am currently on Effexor XR 150MG twice a day. I also sometimes have to use Clonaxepam 1/2 mg before bedtime in order to try and get to sleep. Also Aprazolam once a day as needed. The issue is I was just laid off and I need to fine a generic alternaive to Effexor XR the current generic for it it still too expensive for my budget. I there anything in the SSRI class that you would recommened that i can start transition to?
Avatar f tn Did you taper off slowly or quickly? This is a tough med to quit -- any doc should know this by now. But the intensity and duration of withdrawal is very individual. Prozac is sometimes used to help people withdraw from ssris, but Effexor isn't an ssri, it's an snri, which means it also targets norepinephrine, not just serotonin.
