Effexor vs elavil

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor vs elavil

Avatar n tn Can anyone give me an idea of how long it usually takes for your metabolism to recalibrate after stopping Effexor and/or Lexapro? I've gained significant weight while on these drugs (despite an intense exercise program and careful diet). My nutritionist and MD told me that the drugs likely altered my metabolism, but no one can tell me how long it will take to correct that. Most frustrating, I've noticed that since I stopped taking both, my weight gain has accelerated.
Avatar f tn Drugs made me feel better and trying to live without them just feels like a long dark tunnel with nothing to look forward to. I have been on paxil, celexa, elavil, doxepin, effexor, abilify, prozac, wellbutrin, seroquil and god knows what else, too many to count and nothing helps. If it weren't for my kids I wouldn't even want to live any more, just not worth the fight.
Avatar n tn I would recommend that you get an EMG of the upper and lower extremity and a SSEP (somatosensory evoked potential) to assess the degree of problems that are coming from pinched nerves vs spinal cord compression. I would also recommend that you switch pain medications. Each person responds a differently, and if one is not working you should give others a try. Medications such as neurontin, elavil, effexor, cymbalta, tegretol, etc.
607502 tn?1288251140 I know this is an old thread, but Elavil is Elavil so here goes: I have been on this drug for 27 years. Originally for migraines that started 10 days after my 3rd son was born, but looking back, I had other issues that it took care of. The main problem I had, that it fixed and still fixes, were sleep disturbances. What a problem to have with a 10 week old baby! After the first couple of weeks, any unwanted side effects disappeared. I started on 25 mg an hour before bed, and am now on 75mg.
415867 tn?1323369103 See below a quote from a Today health article Antidepressants Some years ago, I did some studies that showed that tricyclic antidepressants (like Elavil and Tofranil) caused a drop in metabolic rate of up to 10 percent. Translated into calories, this is a pound every seven to 10 days, if you don’t change your diet. These older types of antidepressants affect neurotransmitters, causing a broad range of side effects including significant weight gain.

Avatar n tn Treatment also includes medications for neuropathic pain including Neurontin, Lyrica, Elavil, Cymbalta, Topamax, Effexor, etc. Given your history of suicidal thoughts, I would also recommend that you see a mental health profesional to help you cope with the stress this has placed on your life. I hope this has been helpful.
5079728 tn?1365553589 Anti-depressants such as Celexa, Cymbalta, Elavil, Effexor, Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac, Seroquel and Zoloft have black box warnings because they can increase the risk of suicidal behavior. Bupropion, also known as Wellbutrin (as an anti-depressant) and Zyban (as a smoke cessation aide) has a black box warning for suicidal tendencies and suicide completion.

Avatar f tn I had a very bad reaction of mania with anorexia with the Effexor-XR and same thing happen with the Pristiq and the Cymbalta... Also, my autonomic nervous system tend to be overstimulated easily by all the meds who touch the NE receptors... Maybe that's why I have a problem taking the Paxil cause it's the only one SSRI who affect the NE (noradrenaline)?... But anyway, I try the Celexa again in january and even at 1 mg I had a very fast pulse rate...
