Pristiq is kind of a funny SNRI. Remember it was released just before Effexor XR ended it's 7 year patent protection. Effexor and Pristiq are 99% the same drug in terms of active chemical. Pristiq being Desvenlafaxine and Effexor being Venlafaxine. In fact if you look at the molecular chart for the two drugs they even bind the same. Funny thing is you know why Weith pharm released Pristiq?

Now wants me to get off of Elavil 25mg and Adderal 15mg. Doctor says take the Neurontin for sleep. The Elavil works best for pain, but I can hardly get up in the mornings and it has made me gain 10 plus pounds and counting. I take Clonapin 0.5mg twice a day. Getting off the Elavil, I am having cold feet and hands and a very unsettling feeling and absolutley no energy. Is this withdraw and how long do i suffer?

I am on elavil for supposed acephalgic complicated migraines--I started on 10mg and am now on 25mg--and the dr wants to up it to 50mg. I have gained 6lbs in the last 2 weeks after upping the meds to 25mg. Plus, my vision is still not right. I haven't had another migraine, but the one I had was without headache (I got the numbness, loss of vision, etc.). Are there any meds out there that would work for being proactive with the migraines, but not cause the weight gain???

Dear Paxiled, I stopped taking paxil last year, and almost loose my mind, Tried to take Paxil after 2 months, i felt terrible for thefirst 3 weeks, since i was thinking about getting pregnet in teh future, doctor switch me to lexparo, for 6 months i was taking thsi drug and everytime doctor increase doseage i was loosing my mind. I tried remeron & effexor only for a week, remeron- gave my hard palpitation and effexor high blood pressure 180/120.

I then took Effexor and later ther Effexor XR. Effexor XR allowed me to live a reasonably normal life raising a child and having a career. For at least 3 years my depression has slowly gotten progressively worse. My counselor and I believe it is time to add an additional medication, possibly welbutrin or change to a different antidepressant. Currently I take 300mg of effexor XR. This is the same level I have taken for the entire time I've used effexor. I would like input and advice.

i have never taken wellbutrin but my daughter does, i have taken effexor. for me the effexor was terrible, but some people on this site do very well with it. it made me extremly tired, heart palpitations, raised my blood pressure, jaw pain and many other problems. my daughter says the wellbutrin helps her depression but makes her anxiety worse so if you have anxiety you may have to take something for that on top of the wellbutrin. in my opinion, effexor is horrible, i hated it.

This is my case and it is difficult to understand what I am suffering from most now as the effects of being on effexor are much like a thyroid gone bad. And since I stopped effexor and all antideppresson drugs almost 7 months ago. However now I feel effexor withdrawls are worse. I am aware of this happening and am trying to deal with both problems. Not true that people find Effexor more effective. They all affect each individual differently. Effexor tends to have far more side effects than Zoloft, and is known to be much more difficult to quit. On the other hand, are you sure Zoloft is any safer during pregnancy? Whatever the case, you'll have to taper very carefully off Effexor before you start Zoloft so you can tell which is a side effect of Zoloft and which is a withdrawal effect of Effexor.

I mentioned about switching from Effexor Xr 225mg (which on my own I lowered to 150mg) He said that Effexor XR affects two different areas of the body whereas Zoloft only affects one area. Now he mentioned NOTHING about keep taking the Effexor Xr in lower does while I make hte switch to Zoloft. Am I supposed to just switch right over to Zoloft and discontinue the Effexor Xr??

You are asking if there is an anti-depressant that is the less likely to cause weight gain than Effexor. As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above. It is unclear why anti-depressants cause weight gain.

Never rush coming of psych. meds. I'm on Effexor, as Citalopram didn't help.Am on it for life, as I've relapsed several times, only to end up in Psych. Hospital. Consultant insisted that it is in my best interest to remain on Effexor 150 mg as a 'maint. dose. All of these can cause digestive problems. Effexor could have, too. You just never know. Keep in mind, Zoloft is very different than Effexor, it's a different class of drug. s was put on antidepressants to cope with severe mood swings , anxiety, etc. I have found that effexor xr to be helpful to calm me from outburst of anger but I stay at a too layed back level, no emotion I don't cry as often but never laugh etc. I have researched ADD and wonder if I have ADD. The symptoms are so similar. I think I will ask my Doctor to try me on some of the meds to see if I can see a difference but am afraid because i have high blood pressure.

Looking back over your many posts, I see that you have been on a sort of merry-go-round with medications. And in many cases, you consult with us about efficacy, safety, side effects, etc. which suggests to me that you're NOT getting the info you need from the doctor or some medical professional. In this LATEST post, you "have been given" effexor XR but are considering consulting with a psychologist before taking it. Who gave you the Ef XR? A doctor, I hope.

If you want to know why it this works, a big part of it is the half-life of the medicine (Effexor is 3 hours vs. Prozac 70 hours....short half life means far worse withdrawal). Second is the receptors that Prozac hits vs Effexor which ends up reversing the withdrawal effect. Then when you finally get off Prozac it just slowly fades away over a 7 day period out of your body without any withdrawal.

My doctor put me all the way up to 150 mg of effexor and it made me worse. I've only tried xanax once recreationally so I don't really know the side effects. But my doctor reduced me to 37.5 mg of effexor and 20 mg of celexa (citalopram) plus 5 mg twice a day of clonazepam. I have found that the clonazepam has helped a lot, although I have been feeling extremely tired. But at least I don't have a constant knot in my stomach or get panic attacks.

I have been using Cymbalta for alomost four years, I am very concerned that my Doc wants to start me on 40mg of Prozac when I have been on 120mg of Cymbalta. Can I have your thoughts about 40mg vs. 120mg and what side affects I will have to go though.

Hi. I'm on tamoxifen so I can't take any meds which inhibit cyp2D6 enzymes. I've been on almost ALL SSRI ( Effexor, lexapro, celexa, nortriptyline, fetzima, & viibryd) & my depression worsens with them (suicidal thoughts, etc). The only one that has helped is remeron but every time I've had to return to remeron I gain weight. I'm usually 110-112 and eat very well & workout almost everyday.

After that medicine started working, I tried several more, hoping to get the relief again. I tried Zoloft, Cymbalta, Zyprexa, Valium, Elavil, Xanax (made me more nervous), Klonopin, Ativan (currently on), Abilify and Seroquel. None of these medicines, on any dose took away my panic or anxiety. I recently had a 24 hour urine collection to test for tumors on my adrenal glands, as well as my dopamine level, etc. But it came back normal.
