If you have visited a malaria-risk area, continue taking your antimalarial drug for 4 weeks (doxycycline or mefloquine) or seven days (atovaquone/proguanil) after leaving the risk area.
With regards to these medications interacting with your Tamoxifen, I can only tell you that there isn't a reaction listed between Tamoxifen and Mefloquin ( for anti- malaria). I would suggest you contact your oncologist with this list and ask him or her to discuss this with you.
Based on your history of gastrointestinal problems, I would not recommend doxycycline. Doxycycline works well but can cause sun sensitivity and can cause esophageal reflux (~ heart burn or indigestion). Now, we are down to two choices. First, malarone (atovaquone + proguanil). Malarone is taken daily, begun one day prior to arriving in a malarious area, taken every day while exposed to malaria, and then for one week after you leave the malarious region.
A review of mefloquine use in pregnancy, from clinical trials and reports of inadvertent use of mefloquine during pregnancy, suggests that its use at prophylactic doses is not associated with adverse fetal or pregnancy outcomes. Because of insufficient data regarding its use during pregnancy, atovaquone-proguanil is not recommended to prevent malaria in pregnant women. (Updated October 26, 2011)

She has spent extended periods of time in West Africa (most recently in 2004), and has taken mefloquine as a profalactic for a total of approximately 16 months during her lifetime. She contracted uncomplicated malaria in 1998 which was successfully treated with Fansidar. So far her symptoms remain undiagnosed. A test for mononucleosis was negative. Is it possible that this is a recurrence of malaria, or a reaction to the mefloquine? What additional tests would you recommend?
By the way for anti-malaria prevention, I have been taking mefloquine pills (one a week over 6 to 8 weeks on average) during the last 4 years when I go abroad to Africa. Can that regular intake of Mefloquine can affect my eye vision ?

Our pediatrician recommended the Hep A vaccination as well mefloquine to prevent malaria. Should I be concerned about her taking both of these during the same week (this week) or in combination in general? Are there any additional health precautions we should be taking in visiting this country?

I am on a 30 cycle of doxycycline for an unrelated matter. Wouldn’t this kill chlamydia & gonorrhea?

Problem started while I was taking minocycline for acne. Went in to student health. NP RXed 10 days doxycycline, 100 mg PO BID, sent me to ER. Had an ultrasound, confirmed it was epididymitis plus a hydrocele. They gave me a shot of ceftriaxone and told me to continue with the doxycycline. The ceftriaxone helped a great deal (swelling went down almost immediately) but as I continued the course of doxy the problem began to get worse again.
I followed up with a urologist.
My dermatologist has given me a prescription for Doxycycline as well as Epiduo Gel, which was not covered by my insurance and so i was not able to get that. It seems to me that there are some similarities between this antibiotic and Accutane. Maybe not as severe side effects but the overall impression I am getting is that Accutane is more effective and if closely monitored, safer. Is this true? My doctor didnt give me the impression that there was much I needed to be worried about.

I took Doxycycline for 10 days to treat a sinus infection. A week after finishing the Doxy I developed a sore throat and sore tongue. I'm assuming it is a reaction to the drug. How long will this stay in my system and is there anything I can take to alleviate the reaction?

Mefloquine, (Lariam) is a prophylaxis medication for malaria, which makes total sense if one is going to S. Africa.
Now he has been placed on one of the Fluoroquinolones (an Antibacterial) and is having the same reaction of anxiety.
It is good that he is being followed by a doctor and having tests done, which would have been my first recommendation.

ve read where cold symptoms can be now considered an outbreak. I had a dull headache for a couple of days I think it was due to the doxycycline I was taking but I guess it technically could have been an OUTBREAK right?
