Avatar f tn PS your doc sounds like s/he is on the ball -- that's good! If you would share with us what you learn about whether amoxicillin is as effective as doxy, that would be very interesting -- It sounds like your doc is quite observant -- excellent!
Avatar m tn My St. Bernard was diagnosed with Lyme Disease Monday evening. She was limping for a few days and then it stopped and came back. We gave her an aspirin and it made her very sick, so we took her to vet and the the vet did a blood test that came back positive for Lyme. He gave us Amoxacilin and a med to settle her stomach. My problem is this, She is limping much worse today then she was on Monday. She is eating but not as much previous to Lyme.
Avatar m tn s son had the same rash and his doctor prescribed him amoxicillin 3x/day and said it had to be AT LEAST 14 days for lyme treatment. I looked online and that is what I found also. I am concerned my son was not on antibiotics long enough and that symptoms will show up later when it is harder to treat. Should I call the doctor back and try to get him on another 14 days of treatment or would that be too late at this point? Please any advice would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn Quite interesting, indeed! This article reads to me as trying carefully to reframe the current so-called 'mainstream' view of why those who are supposedly cured (after a few weeks of doxycycline) continue to have symptoms of Lyme. The so-called 'mainstream' view held by the CDC and IDSA is that after the standard treatment for Lyme, any continuing symptoms are due to an over-active immune system reacting to a now-gone Lyme infection.
Avatar f tn With joint pain. My doctor tested me for Lyme disease and it was positive. I took doxycycline For 12 Days till I developed a mild rash on my face. My doctor took me off and put me on amoxicillin for 2 more weeks. My question is if I have contacted syphilis from this exposure would all these antibiotics cure it? And would an 95 day hiv negative oral swab be considered conclusive? Please help put my fears behind me.
Avatar f tn If this is true, it is significant that some physicians follow a protocol for treating Lyme disease that allows just two to six weeks of antibiotic therapy. Based on the above scenario this may be inadequate. "If either of the above examples are true, this may mean that physicians who are acting in good faith by using conservative treatment protocols may actually be prolonging and thus complicating Lyme infection in their patients. However, much of this theory is speculative.
Avatar f tn *Augmentin -- Standard Augmentin cannot exceed three tablets daily due to the clavulanate, thus is given with amoxicillin, so that the total dose of the amoxicillin component is as listed above for amoxicillin. This combination can be effective when Bb beta lactamase is felt to be significant. *Augmentin XR 1000 -- This is a time-release formulation and thus is a better choice than standard Augmentin. Dose -- 1000 mg q 8 h, to 2000 mg q 12 h based on blood levels.
Avatar m tn I had Lyme disease 10 years ago, and had 2 months of doxycycline. The symptoms gradually went away over the next 6 months. My western blot and ELISA Lyme disease blood tests are still positive, even though I do not have symptoms. Do I still have Lyme disease? An allergy doctor I had been seeing last year told me I still have Lyme disease, and he said that's why my allergy is bad. He convinced me to take antibiotics again, but the blood tests are still positive.
1138687 tn?1548643978 Doxy is the usual approach when it's a very recent bite, as yours seems to be. Biaxin is the same as clarithromycin, Dr Burrascano's 'treatment guidelines' posted on the ILADS website say: "First-line drug therapies for Lyme disease may include (in alphabetical order): oral amoxicillin, azithromycin, cefuroxime, clarithromycin [=Biaxin], doxycycline, and tetracycline. These antibiotics have similar favorable results in comparative trials of early Lyme disease.
Avatar m tn Patients treated with appropriate antibiotics in the early stages of Lyme disease usually recover rapidly and completely. Antibiotics commonly used for oral treatment include doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil. Patients with certain neurological or cardiac forms of illness may require intravenous treatment with drugs such as ceftriaxone or penicillin. In a small percentage of cases, these symptoms can last for more than 6 months.
Avatar n tn Doxycycline ("doxy") is often used to treat Lyme and other tickborne illness. It was prescribed for me, but due to some other problems, I have not tried it. It can be hard on some people's digestive systems, but that doesn't happen to everyone, and I think it's considered one of the more effective treatments. I don't think it matters whether the infection is new or not; doxy is still effective if tolerated, so I have read. Another good question for your MD.
Avatar f tn It's good to hear that you caught the infection early -- I would say if you have further symptoms after treatment is completed, to go back to the docs for retesting and perhpas further treatment. Lyme can be difficult to stamp out sometimes, and vigilance is the key. Retreatment can be done, with hope for success the second time around. It's a good question you ask about pregnancy.
7954400 tn?1395710806 Likely diagnosis is Lyme Disease. Antibiotics commonly used for Lyme include doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil.
1691275 tn?1322327507 I've been taking amoxcillin for a suspected Lyme infection for the last week (of a 3-week course), but my new doctor showed me some research that indicates doxycycline is better antibiotic for Lyme and its attendant infections - so he gave me a 3-week prescription. What he forgot to tell me was whether I should finish the amox first or if I can just switch right over to doxy. Anyone have experience with these two antibiotics? Thanks!
Avatar f tn This is so frustrating for many reasons-they say an autoimmune disease can cause a false positive Lyme and because I am a medical assistant and work with some of these doctors that can't figure this out. I am educated enough to know what the bloodwork is showing, but unable to know the cause. The one LLMD we had in our area recently closed his practice so I am on a search for a new one. Thank you for all your info and best of luck to you.
1067297 tn?1255030564 ve read about patient experiences, amoxicillin is a popular choice for treating Lyme, especially in younger patients. Doxycycline is also widely used in treating Lyme. I've taken neither of those two. Depending on if/what co-infections the patient has, other meds/combinations can be effective. I've been on several different antibiotics, including minocylcine, azithromycin, and factive.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have had lymes disease for a few years now. I've constantly had back pain and problems with my back for a long time now, but I didn't know why. A few months ago, i started feeling feverish, but never had a fever when i would check and my whole body just felt drained of everything to the point where I could barely work.

Avatar f tn Gerald W Zaidman, MD; Chief Editor: Hampton Roy Sr, MD === Treatment of Lyme Disease === Difficulties can arise in choosing the appropriate antibiotic treatment regimen, especially in children or potentially pregnant women. Again, an infectious disease consult is helpful in these situations. Finally, if one decides to become actively involved in the management of these patients, stay abreast of the literature, especially in the rapidly changing areas of diagnosis and treatment.
Avatar f tn Hi. I'm still being treated with antibiotics for a clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease. I'm just wondering if there are others out there who experience a large amount of tingling and numbness in hands, feet, face, scalp and sometimes even my tongue. I don't have any pain in my joints, it all seems to be neurological. I also have a lot of pressure in my head and dizziness/lightheadedness. It's as though I can't move my head fast or I'll have an "off" feeling.
Avatar f tn There is a certain antibiotic that is used to kill the Lyme bacteria which is doxycycline. The fact that this medication was not used, could have caused the Lyme disease. Swollen lymph nodes, joint pain and stiffness is a sign of Lyme and perhaps one of the co-infections that come along with it. I would suggest going to our association website ILADS.org and email them to ask them for an LLMD (Lyme literate doctor) closest to where you live.
Avatar f tn I am not medically trained, but to my knowledge it's possible 14 days of Doxycycline was not long enough to eradicate the infection. The tests for Lyme Disease are not 100% accurate. If you are having symptoms, you may want to see a physician who is knowledgable about Lyme Disease (referred to as a LLMD). If you google "Lyme Disease Association" and go to their website, I believe they have a referral function to locate a LLMD.
1580703 tn?1651904887 If you are lyme positive you should follow up with a western blot to check if the bands are correct for lyme. If so They they treat you with Doxycycline for about two months and see how you do. You could have some of the co-infections that go with a tick bite such as Erlichia, Bartonella, and babesiosis.
216175 tn?1226095585 im suffering from chronic lyme right now and we think ive bee undiagnosed for a solid 5-6 years. my doc put me on zithromax too, as well as doxycycline and tindamax for anitbiotics. with such high doses of antibiotics you more than likely will herx.. which is a pretty sucky good thing ya kno. but one thing i noticed that helped was my doc also put me on cholestyramine. its a cholesterol lowering medicine but in the case of lymes it acts as a binding agent.
Avatar f tn t leaving until it was removed and a nurse flushed a dead rotten tick out with a water pick! I was then tested for Lyme and came back positive for Lyme and erlichiosis. I switched drs of course, he proceeded to tell me mo. Had no Lyme disease, he tested me again... Positive! I was put on 6 weeks of doxycycline. That was in 2001 and I have never recovered and am on disability and STILL being told I never had Lyme disease!!!! HELP!!
147426 tn?1317265632 Does this mean there is no DNA for Lyme, but you still carry the spirockete that causes Lyme disease and you will never get rig off it? I was tested for lyme twice having these results: Lyme Western Blot Results for first one =0.67; for second one= 0.15 (Negative results) Do you have any idea why the number went down? I have many symptoms, and I asked my infectious disease doctor why he does not prescribe me antibiotic, if there is a probability of infection.
