My tiny four pound Maltese/Poodle cross has been coughing and I was wondering if someone has any ideas. He is about 8 1/2 and has had issues with his behavoir. He won't let us have him groomed without him trying to bite us or get his nails trimmed, so every four months or so we have to have him knocked out to have this done. I wasn't sure if this was some of his problem from the stuff they give him or what, but he does it alot especially at night.
Actually we are currently out of town however I did contact our Vet and she also said it could be kennel cough, which is odd since our dog is an indoor dog and is never around other dogs. She also said it could be a nasty cold... since we cannot make it in right now she recommended I get some Benadryl and give her 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day. Ever since we begun to give her the medicine she seems to have gotten much better.
My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.
I'm so sorry to hear about you losing your Duke. They become a fixture in your life and it takes time to adjust to their absence, doesn't it? I'm glad Duke got to be with responsible, loving pet owners. I'm sure he had a really good life with you.
Did the vet explain Porter's coughing? Buddy didn't cough and I just looked up the most common symptoms of Cushing's and coughing isn't among them.
She showed improvement while on the medication, but the symptoms returned as soon as the course of medication ended. Eating Diamond dog food naturals lamb and rice formula. She had been on this type of dog food all of her life.
-Month 2 – The coughing got a little more violent still, and she produced a white foamy substance with it - was prescribed more antibiotics and a little more strength of steroids. She had a series of x-rays which showed some mucus in lungs, but no signs of pneumonia.
My 12 yr. old pug has been coughing for 3 months. I have been to two different vets and together they have ruled out collapsed trachea, kennel cough, pneumonia and heart disease. He has been on several different antibiotics and steriods. He is still eating as usual and the coughing seems to be worse at night. They are not productive coughs just dry hacking coughs. On about Page 4 is a post entitled, "My dog has been coughing for..." and it's an old post. HIS dog, it turns out, did eat some burrs that got caught in his fur... and MY dog has been coughing and he also ate some burrs. Since it was an old post, he did not come back about it.
Have there been any other symptoms -such as vomiting, diarrhea, coughing or retching, unusual tiredness?
Any dog who normally has a good appetite and isn't too faddy with food, will eat. A sudden change in appetite usually means your dog isn't feeling well. He could have some pain somewhere. Pain can cause a dog to lose his appetite.
If he doesn't start eating within 1 day or if there are any other symptoms at all, I would take him for a good check up with the vet.
My dog is constantly licking his paws and body. Every time he does this he hacks and coughs like he has a hairball in his throat. He has recurring skin problems that present as scabby, slightly smelly places on his back, left side, stomach and chest. I have combed/brushed these areas and hair always comes out with the scab. I give him Brewers Yeast w/garlic every day in his food. He gets glucosamine (sp) twice a day.

I live in California and I recently ate something that my dog got into by accident. And my throat started itching like 30 minute after. (it could be from a really salty food) And I started coughing like a day after. Is that Rabies?? My dog doesn't seem to have any symptoms of rabies. She hasn't gotten her shot.
Spunky is a 15 year male that has developed the same exact symptoms described here! A coughing that seems to be accentuated when he drinks and boy he drinks. Seems like he wants to hack something out of his trachea but nothing comes out. Sometimes some mucous fluid does come out but the vet hasn't been able to pinpoint the cause.
But they should definitely look closely at her trachea. She is likely exhausted from the wheezing and coughing which would affect her appetite. Our dog used to gag a bit at first when she was eating but we started her treatment very quickly so she got better very quickly. I hope you find out soon what it is so your girl can be properly treated and comfortable again. Please post updates to let us know how she is doing.
As for the heart murmur, the treatment depends on exactly what type of heart defect is causing the murmur. Since your vet predicted that the dog would start coughing, and the dog has in fact started coughing, I take it that it is not a benign murmur. In my nonprofessional opinion, most likely the murmur is due to valve disease, and the cough is a symptom of congestive heart failure.
