my 4yr old golden retriever is constantly sniffing where my 13yr old bengal cat has been. They are both males and the cat has been spayed. My cat has had a cough or asthma for over a year now. Last year I took him to the vet where they did all sorts of tests, bloodwork, xrays & scans etc. It was very expensive & my cat was petrified over the few days they did all this. The vet said his heart looked unusual but it was fine. He gave me theophylline for the cough which did help.

But the last 3 weeks or so one of the starts to wheez as if something was stuck in their throats (much like a cat sounds when they cough up a hairball). They do this for a few seconds and then they are fine. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

NO! Especially at that age. Stay away from the cats and if it were my grandchild? I would get rid of the cat. Dogs can sometimes be worse than cats too. Now that I am older I will take an antihistamine and I'm usually okay if I don't stay too long, but as an adult I know the cues and know when to leave. A four year old is much too young. I remember spending summer weekends at my friends house and being up ALL night long coughing and coughing and coughing. I'm allergic to dogs!

I live in California and I recently ate something that my dog got into by accident. And my throat started itching like 30 minute after. (it could be from a really salty food) And I started coughing like a day after. Is that Rabies?? My dog doesn't seem to have any symptoms of rabies. She hasn't gotten her shot.

My tiny four pound Maltese/Poodle cross has been coughing and I was wondering if someone has any ideas. He is about 8 1/2 and has had issues with his behavoir. He won't let us have him groomed without him trying to bite us or get his nails trimmed, so every four months or so we have to have him knocked out to have this done. My 8 year old cat recently started coughing, not the ususal hair ball stuff, and I can hear him breath. His lung sound "wet" . I started giving him some over the counter hairball remedy and think he may have aspirated some liquid. Today is Sunday. My vet is not open today but will take him to emergency if I have to. He is drinking and eating, his gums are pink. Should I go to emergency?

I am reluctant to have surgery done on such a small and young dog. She only weighs 6.8 lbs and is eight weeks old today. Can it eventually go away on it's own? Other than the cough, she seems normal.

t know that coughing is NOT NORMAL till i took him and found out he had pneumonia. What I was told is unless your cat is coughing up a hairball, coughing is not normal; and the impaired breathing definitely sounds like something is not right-please bring your cat to the vet right away.

The vet is at a loss as to what caused this. There has been no disruption to routines or major changes in food, the other dog and the cat are both fine. She wanted to eat but when you fed her she walked away. It seems like she was just refusing food altogether. Please know that coughing (unles it's a hairball) or panting is NOT ok in your cat. We had an upper resp, virus go through our house and 2 cats were fine. The 3rd I thought had mucus in his throat or trouble breathing due to stuffy nose like the rest and didn't realise his distress till he coughed up a frightening gob of green phlegm. My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.

But they should definitely look closely at her trachea. She is likely exhausted from the wheezing and coughing which would affect her appetite. My dog seems to like other animals. He does well at the dog park unless another dog challenges him. If he sees a cat, he wags his tail and only barks or chases if the cat comes at him. I was thinking, maybe a young cat or a kitten that would not mind a dog? Anyone have both and what animal did you get first? Should I get an outside cat?

I have been coughing for about 7 years. I have been to 3 doctors and been on meds for post nasal drip, asthma. I had my thyroid out in Oct; because it was enlarged and closing up my trachia but that didn't help. Have had xrays and cat scans and everything looks good. It seems to coming from my throat area. sometimes i cough so hard that i almost pass out. I'm really at wits end. Any suggestions?

My 12 yr. old pug has been coughing for 3 months. I have been to two different vets and together they have ruled out collapsed trachea, kennel cough, pneumonia and heart disease. He has been on several different antibiotics and steriods. He is still eating as usual and the coughing seems to be worse at night. They are not productive coughs just dry hacking coughs. I am running out of ideas and am desperate for answers.

My cat recently was spayed. Next morning she was coughing (like hairball cough). No fever. Not eating. She was put on pencillin. She is still coughing 3 days later and is barely eating. Could she have aspiration pneumonia and was this caused by the anesthesia? Should I worry?

Dear Pug Dad, On about Page 4 is a post entitled, "My dog has been coughing for..." and it's an old post. HIS dog, it turns out, did eat some burrs that got caught in his fur... and MY dog has been coughing and he also ate some burrs. Since it was an old post, he did not come back about it.

Whose cat was it? Was it an indoor cat or an outdoor cat? Did you know the cat? The reason I ask is because if you did not know the cat and or see the cat leaving the feces (in the event that it was an outdoor cat) it might not have been cat feces at all, but raccoon feces or some other wild animal. If this happened indoors or if you know the cat, there's not really anything to worry about. Dogs LOVE browsing through cat boxes, they think they're in a deli!

I bet the folks on the dog forum would be able to help even more as the real problem is the dog, not the cat. My Belgian Shepherd would put my cat's head in her mouth during play time. No hum ping.... Good Luck!

Your cat may have been around a female dog in heat or exposed to some of her secretions. Even after grooming himself the secretions can be still be smelled by the male dogs. Have your cat bathed at the vet or by a groomer several times to eliminate the smell.
