Coughing dog allergy

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing dog allergy

coughing

Avatar n tn My 12 yr. old pug has been coughing for 3 months. I have been to two different vets and together they have ruled out collapsed trachea, kennel cough, pneumonia and heart disease. He has been on several different antibiotics and steriods. He is still eating as usual and the coughing seems to be worse at night. They are not productive coughs just dry hacking coughs. I am running out of ideas and am desperate for answers.
Avatar m tn well, unless Mom cant afford more medical costs, I would suggest trying for a second opinion from a different vet. TWO, it could be food allergy related. If the dog is eating anything that has corn, soy, or wheat in it..it can be an allergy. Alot of cheaper dog foods have corn and soy. both being exceptionally bad for any dog. same goes for looking at any treats that may be given. elliminate these three ingredients and see what happens. you should be about to tell within a week or so.
Avatar n tn Actually we are currently out of town however I did contact our Vet and she also said it could be kennel cough, which is odd since our dog is an indoor dog and is never around other dogs. She also said it could be a nasty cold... since we cannot make it in right now she recommended I get some Benadryl and give her 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day. Ever since we begun to give her the medicine she seems to have gotten much better.
Avatar f tn The three types of underlying allergies are parasite (fleas, mites), food allergy, and pollen/dust allergies. If your dog is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely. Options to treat allergies are to continue to treat symptoms with medications such as antihistamines, fatty acids, bathing, antibiotics, occasional steroids, etc, or to identify and treat the underlying cause.
Avatar f tn Hi there, I just read your comments. You say you suffer from AF. What is this ? You say your GP doesn't think allergy testing is necessary. I think maybe it's time for allergy testing. Out of curiosity, how long have you had your GP ? Just wondering. You could ask your GP for a referral to an allergist. If you are allergic to a particular thing, this can cause coughing , for example house dust in your lungs, sometimes perfume can cause coughing. I have asthma.
3181540 tn?1344550924 My dog is coughing a lot, sometimes it wakes him up too, but mostly he sleeps well. He eats normally, even more than usually. He's 2,5 years old and was just recently in a pet hotel, in contact with a lot of dogs. It might be kennel cough, but I'm not sure. What should I do?
Avatar f tn I know this is not normal to have these coughing fits for 3 years and I am wondering if her migraines and dark circles under her eyes have something to do with it. She had been diagnosed with migraines but her cough no matter what the dr's have given her - never work. I get the feeling her dr thinks I am making this up. He has never even referred her to a Ear Nose and Throat Dr or Allergist. What should I do?
Avatar f tn i had to take zofran for the gagging....
Avatar f tn Hi i have a 12 year old male staffie who has had 4 seizures over the past 4/5 months other than this and a few fatty lumps he eats well runs around and is very happy but for the past few days has started coughing normally first thing in the morning and when excited cough sounds like he has some thing stuck in his throat any advice ??
Avatar f tn Ask your vet about the dosage for an allergy med and maybe try that? Is your dog overweight? Our vet said this coughing/gagging may be due to fatty around the trachea. Has your dog had an exam besides the $$$ xray? Wondering if the thyroid gland is enlarged and putting pressure on the throat? Just some thoughts. Hope you figure this out.
Avatar n tn MY 7 YEAR OLD CHIHUAHUA MALE DOG HAS BEEN COUGHING FOR THE LAST WEEK AND A HALF SOUNDS LIKE HE HAS SOMETHING STUCK IN HIS THROATH AND I HAVE INJECTED ANTIBIOTICS FOR THE LAST 5 DAYS
Avatar m tn There are many possible causes here. Food allergies and allergies in general being my top two suspects. My Australian Cattle Dog turned out to be allergic to a high quality dog food that we'd used for years. We now feed a grain free diet of venison. No more coughing. You milage may vary here. Try switching up your dogs diets and see if it helps.
796974 tn?1237688273 I'Why is it that everytime that I wash my hair I get allergy? I also get allergy without washing my hair but it only last for 1 or 2 days .
Avatar n tn We took her to the vet and she was given one shot of cortisone, anti-histamine, more Frontline down her back and a booster shot of vitamins. The next morning my poor dog was panting and coughing internally (much like kennel cough but without the gagging). She was also a little restless and had a swollen tummy. In a panic I phoned our vet and was told 'hang in here - she will calm down'.
Avatar n tn I live in California and I recently ate something that my dog got into by accident. And my throat started itching like 30 minute after. (it could be from a really salty food) And I started coughing like a day after. Is that Rabies?? My dog doesn't seem to have any symptoms of rabies. She hasn't gotten her shot.
Avatar n tn Sounds like you might have a mild case of allergy related athsma. Try taking an allergy medicine for a week and see if that helps. It doesn't sound like you have any mucus, so the cold medicines wouldn't work. My children have allergy related athsma. They rattle when they sleep and mostly just when sleeping or exercising. They also have a cough. I even had one child who always sounded like her nose was stuffy and had bad breath, that went away with the allergy medicine.
Avatar n tn Barbara533 Have you tried an antihistamine? rushtyyyyy green and yellow flem should not be coming up from allergy unless it is stomach acid. Usually allergy is clear mucus. I'm not a doctor but I wonder if it is a bacteria infection. Sorry I don't know the correct answer. Maybe the doctors are correct too. I just personally haven't heard of colored mucus from allergy. Allergy can cause mucus that can lead to bacteria infection too. See another doctor.
Avatar f tn My tiny four pound Maltese/Poodle cross has been coughing and I was wondering if someone has any ideas. He is about 8 1/2 and has had issues with his behavoir. He won't let us have him groomed without him trying to bite us or get his nails trimmed, so every four months or so we have to have him knocked out to have this done. I wasn't sure if this was some of his problem from the stuff they give him or what, but he does it alot especially at night.
Avatar n tn So we are now at 1/4 pill daily of prednisone and theophylline twice a day. coughing getting worse. Does anyone have any ideas?
Avatar m tn I had a dry and itching throat, so it makes me coughing for about 3 weeks, what should I do?
Avatar f tn A few backs back, my dog was coughing and gagging (just like you are describing). It was random throughout the day and night. Almost seemed like he was gasping for air. The vet dx as kennell cough. Please take your dog to the vet!! Kennell cough if not treated can be fatal in dogs. Even if he has been vaccinated, he can certainly contract the virus (there are numerous virus's out there of this!
Avatar n tn My 14+ year old female Jack Russell was on heart medication, fortekor for 7-8 years and recently she has developed mild coughing (coughing frequency about 2-3 times a day) since last month and the vet prescribed her additional medicine such as pred syrup and prodin syrup for 5-7 days. But after taking the steroid for 4 days, she started panting more and shiver on off the whole day especially more on morning and night. She was normal (except coughing) before the pred syrup till the 4th day.
Avatar m tn t have a runny nose or cough while awake. It could take some time for the drainage to pool and cause the coughing. Taking out the tonsils won't help with this either. ( I am a chronic allergy sufferer and this is what my doctor told me as a child). Unfortunately, doctors seem reluctant to test and diagnose allergies in young children. My poor son had to wait until he was 12 before I could give him some real help even though he suffered from age 2 and up.
