Depo provera estrogen

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera estrogen

depo-provera

Avatar f tn If you were my patient, I would advise you that depo provera is not thought to increase the risk of blood clots dramatically like estrogen does, but it is possible that it could have contributed somehow.
Avatar f tn Hi Dr. Goodman, I wonder if you have any information about how Depo-Provera can change the symptoms of ovarian cancer v. ovarian cysts? I have been on Depo-Provera for two years and it seems that it would mask all the symptoms that are most likely to identify a cyst vs. a tumour. Do you know anything about how the two would look different in the presence of Depo-Provera?
Avatar f tn I tried doubling up on the nasal spray since I was prescribed the wrong strength, but it did not help. I had my second Depo Provera shot on December 7. I thought it would help make the bleeding stop, but I am still bleeding. I have also tried a estrogen pill I was prescribed, but it has not helped. I know I will have light bleeding on the Depo Provera, but is it normal to be bleeding for 37 days? I have not felt like myself lately and I am having trouble doing my everyday activities.
Avatar n tn To re-hash, I was put on Depo-Provera for endometriosis. I'm at the end of the second month of its three month effective range, and everything's been fine so far. (I had surgery on 5/17, light bleeding until about the beginning of the second week of June, then nothing since *yay*). For the past 3-4 days, I've been getting that 'pre-period' feeling (slightly *ugh*, little crampy on the side where the cyst was, and mucousy discharge.
Avatar f tn He told me that he was going to try the Depo Provera shot, because that would be a more effective pain reducer and would help the endo from not coming back. I took the shot in the middle of December 2013, and started bleeding the beginning of January. I was not due to take the next shot until March, but I was still bleeding in February consistently. I called the doctor again and said that I was still bleeding, and they told me that I could either come and take the 2nd shot early or wait it out.
Avatar n tn I was given a shot of depo-provera yesterday...and when I asked about side affects all I was told was nausea, headache, and dizziness. After reading quite a few articles online, it seems there are a lot more serious side affects than I was led to believe. I've been having lots of chest pain and shortness of breath, but the doctor doesn't seem to think it's related to the shot.
Avatar n tn I was on depo for 1 year. (I'm 25 now, 23 at the depo time) I gained 50 pounds, had terrible mood swings, depression, bone loss, fatigue and some minor other problems. I suffer from knee/joint pain now because depo causes you to loose calcium in your bones. If you choose to go with it, make sure you start a calcuim supplament right away. I honestly would suggest researching into any drug before you commit to it. Some people I know have had really good luck with it.
432411 tn?1206475709 I was on Depo Provera for BC for 8 years with no side effects but headaches, which were manageable. Also had no periods, which was great! However, I became ill when I stopped having the injections at age 45. I experienced fatigue, joint pain and swelling, and depression. I was tested for everything from Lyme disease and Lupus, to thyroid conditons - all negative. My Dr. finally gave up and diagnosed me with Chronic Fatigue syndrome.
Avatar n tn Hi, I am 17, I am on Depo Provera and am having side effects such as constant bleeding (1 month and half) and the common mood changes. I was told that if I take estrogen I can minimize the bleeding or even stop it...However I was informed by a nurse that due to breast cancer running in my family if I starting to take an estrogen pill so early it can potentially make my risk of breast cancer even higher for the future.
Avatar n tn After being on depo provera for 1 year, I decided to discontinue use and switch to the pill. I decided to be single (and not sexually active) for a while, so I decided to wait until I got my period to start taking the pill. The only problem is that I STILL haven't had a period! It's been 6 or 7 months since I stopped getting the shots. I had normal periods while on the shot, and before I was on the shot, but once I stopped getting it my periods vanished...
Avatar f tn When i was receiving the depo shot the only thing it made me do was gain weight!! The doctors say that not all women gain weight on it!!
Avatar f tn Ive heard that the depo is the best out there. except the fact that it can weaken your bones and make you gain weight. but if you havent stopped your period in 4 months you should deff. call your dr cause that doesnt sound right at all.
Avatar f tn I have been taking the Depo-Provera shot for over a year now. I am a 33 year old. I have 2 children, 10 years old and 7 years old, and have hot flashes during the day, and worse at night, along with cold sweats. The reason the doctor insisted on the depo was because of maternal family history of estrogen-fed breast cancer. My question is whether the depo shot is inducing menopause hot flashes, or do I need to be concerned about other things, such as cancer.
Avatar f tn You had started with Depo provera shots in late June and have got prolonged bleeding since July. I assure you that there is no need to panic. Heavy and prolonged bleeding are common side effects of starting Depo shots and usually it takes 3 months for such menstrual irregularities to settle down.Depo shots are to be given every three months, so for the first shot this kind of menstrual irregularity can occur.
Avatar f tn I usually respond terribly to hormone treatments but I'm in such a terrible and desperate position right now that I just started taking the Depo provera shot. Last Tuesday to be exact. Still in excruciating pain and have searched the net high & low for days for the answer to this question. Has anyone here tried this treatment for endo pain and gotten relief? Was wondering how long it usually takes to start working for pain.
Avatar n tn I have been on depo for 11 years. I would be due for my next shot on 9/27 but my Doctor has advised that I stop having it. She has been treating me for migraines and depression with Imitrex (when needed) and a daily dosage of Prozac of 10mg. The Imitrex thankfully, works, and the migraines have also been lessened by the Prozac.
Avatar f tn I wonder what the difference between the two depo shots are and I wonder why my gyno recommended the other depo shot if the depo-subq provera 104 shot is specific for endo ?
Avatar f tn I've just turned 18 and I've been using the depo shot for at least 7 months because the pill was making me sick. When I asked my Nurse about depo she just told me about the positives which left me very much in the dark about this contraception.Since starting my shots I have gained 14LBS in just SEVEN months!!I have gone back to the nurse since and explained that my diet and exercise hasn't changed but I'm gaining weight, she wasn't exactly sympathic and insisted I eat less!
Avatar f tn Knowing that Depo-provera ( the birth control shot) has provera in the name, can that also cause breast cancer?
Avatar n tn It can take 12-18 months for Depo Provera to be completely out of your system. But probably much less since you only had once shot.
Avatar n tn Well I didnt have AF and most likely it was due to me previously being on Depo Provera in 2004 and BC pills. So in December 2005 my Dr gave me provera. I took it for 7 days 10mg and I got AF 2 days later...usually you get AF anywhere 3 to 10 days after the last pill. Well in Jan 06 still no AF since the one in Dec. So I again took Provera, same dosage. Well in Feb still no AF and I took a HPT and got a BFP!
Avatar n tn No form of birthcontrol has worked for me to regulate my periods, and the side effects from these pills were awful. I am currently on Depo provera, and am having a hard time. I have been bleeding for several weeks, rather than not. It may be that our body due to the hormone irregularities is not affected as it should be by these drugs. So far I have had only one treatment work, but that was to stop my periods completly.
Avatar n tn The medication is often given to women who do not ovulate on their own and Provera interrupts the estrogen-stimulation of the endometrium to cause menstrual bleeding. This bleeding can be very small in amount or it can be heavy. I assume the bleeding and the spotting on the 10th day of Provera are linked in time. An isolated episode of bleeding following intercourse can be from local irritation.
Avatar n tn I've read that if you do not bleed in response to Provera, you have low estrogen, and should be given estrogen along with the Provera. My doctor gave me something else instead, so that would make me believe my estrogen level was ok, if that's the case, shouldn't I have bled after Provera? I just don't want to waste my time taking medication I don't need.
Avatar f tn I do not want to start treatment on the Depo Lupron because I do know that when you lower your estrogen levels although it helps the endometriosis.. It hurts the growth of hair, substantially, I compare it to when woman are pregnant they have a lot of estrogen in their bodies with hormones raging, most woman's hair grows during pregnancy. Then when they have their baby some woman start to notice hair shedding, this is because the hormone levels are not as high.
Avatar n tn I have been on depo-provera for 2 years for treatment of stage 4 endometriosis with secondary cpp and ibs. I recently visited my first endometriosis specialist in Vancouver. She told me to talk to my doctor about changing my birth control as i was taking 150mg every 2 months. the risks of bone loss are very high. she also suggested a birth control low in estrogen. a week after my visit with her i made an appt to see my gp.

Avatar n tn But everyone is different and reacts differently to depo. Some people even get pregnant while on depo or once they stop it. Usually it stays in your system from 12-18 months. I stopped depo in Nov 04 and started BCP's to regualte my periods. Then in Aug 05 I stopped BCP's to TTC. Because the depo was still in my system and I just got of BCP's I didnt have a period without the help of provera until Dec 05. I now am almost 21 weeks pregnant.
