Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera and thyroid

depo-provera

Avatar m tn I just went to the GYN and got my annual pelvic exam and my first shot of depo and so far everything has been okay. However, once I didn't get my period I started to worry and I took a pregnancy test just in case and it did come out negative. But I'm still freaking out since I am only 18 and really do not want to be pregnant. So is it normal to be late for your period after getting the shot? or should I take another test? Thanks.
Avatar n tn I have been on Depo Provera for 13 years. I have not had a period in probably 10 years or longer. I got the flu and started taking flu medicine and two days later all of the sudden - a period. I am freaking out. What would cause a sudden period after such a long absence? I want it to go away NOW. Did the flu medicine kill my depo shot?
4069776 tn?1349521984 Hello, I was on depo provera for 9 years, I had my last shot in Jan 2012 and was suppose to come get my next shot April 2012, My doctor informed me that it would be fine for me to just stop taking it because I did so well while I was on it and that I should be fine coming off of it, well I didnt. I had horrible side effects from July and they are still happening now, I have had every test done (ultrasounds, blood test, endoscopes, ect.) and everything came back normal.
987844 tn?1256852969 Hi there, My question is, although I have hypothyroidism and quite frequently have heart palpatations, and this is not necesserily due to my eltroxin levels being to high, Can Depo-Provera create a situation whereby you mimic all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, Lately my heart palpatations are more frequent and my levels are in normal range at the moment, This does no happen all the time though only seems to be when I should be on a cycle. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn Hi. I had my last depo shot in august and I just finnished my first 10days of provera on oct. 4 and I still havent had a period yet. I know sometimes it can take up to 14 days after but Im well over my 14 days. So my question is why havent I had a period yet? And could it be that the shot is still in my system or is the provera meant to over-power it? Please Help?!
432411 tn?1206475709 I found this thread after googling "Depo Provera thyroid". Why? Because I was starting to join some dots in my head and wondering if the conclusions I was drawing had merit. It seems they have some. I have tears in my eyes reading so many stories above. God I know that frustration, judgement, self-flagellation, depression and desperation! I know what it feels like to be the "living dead".
Avatar n tn I did have ulcers, but why did they flare up during my time of month? I went to a gyno. They said try Depo-Provera shot. I did and gained a ton of weight. My periods were constant and I still got sick. Then I got real sick again, was in the hospital, and lost the weight shortly after my release. Since then, I haven’t gotten my period (3 years now), nor have I gotten sick. About a year ago, I started eating more (holiday times) and gained more weight than before.
Avatar n tn I have always been told I could never have kids. Kidney problems as a child and thyroid problems as a teenager. At 18 decided I should get on Depo anyways because I am lucky like that. Was on Depo for 2 years, was supposed to get my shot mid January of 2005. Lack of time, forgetting whatever the reason I delayed the shot. WIth everything I read about the turn around time to get pregnant I wasn't really worried about it.
Avatar f tn TSH is a pituitary hormone and does not provide the full picture. FT3 and FT4 are actual thyroid hormones, so they will tell you what the thyroid is actually producing. Your symptoms are consistent with hypothyroidism. Once you get those tests done, post the result with reference ranges, which have to come from your own report, here and we can help interpret them.
Avatar n tn You girls have to discontinue Depo Provera at once and I highly recommend never putting any hormones into your bodies ever again. I have experienced a living nightmare from Depo Prover for the past three years. After I got the Depo shot I went home and researched on the web about the drug. I cried for three hours in fear that that could happen to me. What happened was worse. Five days after the shot a menstrual cycle started that would not cease. It wasn't a normal cycle.
Avatar f tn I can tell you that I went to the doctor numerous times and they always did a pap and said everything is normal sometimes women dont have periods on depo some women do. I can also say that I have been off of depo for now a year and three months and barely got my period!!! That med. really is weird!
Avatar n tn I was supposed to receive my last shot of depo in July and I didn't receive the shot in hopes that I would get back to a normal period but nothing like that has happened yesterday was the first day I had any abnormal discharge n it wasn't spotting it was like creamy. Brown in color and had no smell help! Wats goin on?
Avatar f tn Hi there, Once you are off depovera it may take some time for your periods to return to normal. Depo-Provera is a hormone shot which is a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy, and a woman needs six to eight months to let the hormone clear before she will be able to conceive. It may take some time to conceive but depo does not inhibit fertility .Do not worry. In case you do not conceive in next few months consult a gynecologist.
Avatar n tn here is my web site and depo group web address. please feel free to take a look and ask me questions!!! love...kimmie http://health.groups.yahoo.
Avatar f tn I will never go on Depo Provera again. My daughter was on Depo Provera at college, and discontinued the shot and has lost that weight and is thin again. Fitday.com's free site has helped me keep up with my carb intake, and also tells me how many calories, how much fat etc. I use. It does this automatically when I put my food in for the day. Also Magic Bus has a forum where you can learn how to lose weight quick and even post on a challenge to keep you honest and responsible.
Avatar n tn I have been seeing a specialist who prescribed provera and clomiphene which have done nothing. My periods are extremely irregular now (either not having one or having one every 2 weeks). Should I be worried that I won't be able to conceive? I never had any problems before the Depo Provera. Dear Evie: The average time to return ovulation and menses following DepoProvera is 5 months from the last injection.
Avatar n tn because im due for another depo shot in 2010 should i get it or just dnt take anything and let my body regulate?
Avatar f tn I know it sounds crazy but my hair was really thinning from hormones and my thyroid and the Bioten supplements reallly helped me. Everyone is different and their body chemistry is different so there is no definite answer if you will have horrible side effects or not. Myself I remember gain a few pounds and having a few hot flashes. I totally agree with ticked that brown blood sounds like old blood. Have you ever had any type of ovarian cysts?
Avatar n tn I was on depo for about a month after my son was born, and I said never again. I'm now having alot of problems and I'm not sure if its from that or just other things. I would say go get checked out to be safe. I have my period that last me for 2 months straight but this time it lasted 2 months straight took 1 week off, started back up and now its still on an every other day routine.
497047 tn?1210002233 52 and he did start me on Synthroid, 25mg. I called back and asked the doctor to go ahead and run the full thyroid and those results will be in Monday. That was before I realized that I had all those old lab reports. I don't understand all the other numbers though...the T3, T4 and all that. I'm sure the lithium had an affect on the thyroid, just by looking at these old labs. What effect...if your thyroid is messed up...does it all play on your hormones?
Avatar f tn She never informed me why my thyroid but I assume because I had been off of Depo Provera for almost 2 years and had only had a few random periods, she did state that I was ovulating when I went in. Never had a period after or since. I was also experiencing fatigue and had told her of that and had gained 10 lbs. Which was strange because I hadnt changed my diet and have always maintained my weight.
Avatar n tn She told me to never eat anything white (except chicken). Well her advice worked. It's something about the Depo Provera and and inability to metabolize carbs while Depo is still hiding in your tissues. She told me to eat this way until I lost the weight I want, and that then I could eat bread, salad, and the foods I love again. She also said the weight will not come back, as the depo will be gone. So I look forward to that in another month or so. I have already lost 45 lbs!
Avatar f tn Dysfunctional ovaries as in PCOD, thyroid gland problems, and starting and stopping birth control pills or any other birth control method can all affect your hormone balance. Depending on your detailed symptoms and medical history your doctor may recommend a pelvic examination and tests like urine examination, pregnancy test ,pap smear and other cervical screening tests. Only after a detailed clinical evaluation the cause can be determined. Hope it really helps. Do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn There's a very similar thread on this site re Depo Provera injections and thyroid issues. I have similar concerns. I've had Depo and now on my second Implanon and am being treated for hypothyroidism. I am very much questioning whether there is a causal link.. My first instinct was that the Depo caused my thyroid issues.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have been gaining weight after discontinuing depo provera and adderall 30mg. I have been gaining wait rapidly, it's really quite scary. I was 122lb in December and after weighing in on October 15th I am not 182lb! A few months ago I was 153.. Doctors I've seen tell me to "eat healthy and exercise." Well, I already do that. I always have been healthy and involved in sports. My weight is getting to be very uncomfortable.
Avatar n tn Also check thyroid status and perhaps go to a OBGYN that specializes in fertility
Avatar f tn That is why my docs missed my thyroid disease, because they used my TSH to check my thyroid, and it was a 2.74, which was normal to them. WRong!!! I have Hashimoto's. In the early stages of Hashi, our bodies swing from hypo to hyper, so TSH may also swing from low to high. When we swing, we go from hot to cold, tired to wired, constipated to diarrhea, depression to anxiety.
Avatar f tn I also had a thyroid uptake scan and that came back normal too. Somedays I will be fine and think that I am better and then it will just hit me all of a sudden and I will have the anxiety again for days. I just don't know if it could be my hormones messed up from the miscarriage causing this or still possibly a thyroid problem like postpartum thyroiditis. Well these last couple of days I have had my anxiety feeling really bad again. I keep feeling like I can't catch my breath.
