Avatar n tn For example, eighteen percent of people with high blood pressure can reduce the pressure by taking simple calcium supplements. That study was funded by a company manufacturing calcium-channel blockers, for whom I worked briefly two decades ago. A long, long time ago, when Obama was a gleam in his father's eye, I worked in college in a behavioral science lab and we experimented with use of conditioning to reduce blood pressure.
Avatar f tn Carb Blockers are diet pills that work by inhibiting the metabolism of carbohydrates into stored fat. Brand names include Carb Intercept, Anatril,C Block and Carb Cutter.
Avatar n tn I would like to know if MCT OIL ( from coconut) any good for losing fat and for a diabetic diet? It has lots of CV benefits as well as anti- inflammatory fungal anti bacterial and antiviral . Avatar n tn Here is another article on the benefits of counting carbs that may help you. We are working on developing more articles on carb counting as well! http://www.medhelp.
Avatar n tn Before I was on beta blockers, marijuana did not help because it raised my heart rate making my symptoms worse. But on beta blockers, I find that using marijuana helps so much! I smoke a little bit when I need to have energy and it is amazing what a difference it makes. Coming down can be a bit rough sometimes, but honestly, I don't think I could go on every day without my medical marijuana supply. Does anyone else find marijuana helps?
Avatar f tn And I have basically continued to watch what I eat. Has this happened with anyone else? Do other beta blockers have this effect as well? My husband is on a beta blocker, and he does not have this problem.
Avatar f tn IST is exceptionally hard to manage, and often is either just tolerated or managed with medications such as beta blockers (which if the asthma is very severe, can be exacerbated by beta blockers). Ablation of the sinus node is rarely performed and done and if so, only in the most severe cases. This is because the sinus node is smaller in size, and management of IST often means that the entire sinus node can be damaged.
Avatar f tn ve been on them for a month or so.
Avatar f tn m taking beta blockers. My PACs respond well to beta blockers but sometimes they break through the beta blockade. It typically happens if I'm on a low carb diet (for some mysterious reason I haven't yet figured out) Lifting weights is notorious for provoking premature beats. The adrenaline levels in your blood can increase 100 times from baseline, and the heart rate isn't as high as during aerobic exercise.
Avatar f tn It happened again last night, and the only explanation I have for it is a very heavily carb-laden meal late in the evening. A couple of weeks ago, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I think eating a very large pomegranate late in the evening caused it. Same MO...heart rate upper 80s/lower 90s sustained for hours.
Avatar n tn Timing of bolus dose prior to eating can help with post eating highs and lows. Low carb eating can also help greatly with reducing insulin dose and reducing those swings. With very low carb eating and insulin i can mostly keep my sugars in range of 70 - 110 range. Monitor closely as you eat low carb as your insulin requirements may drop dramatically. Dr richard bernstein book diabetes solutions, presents his teachings on low carb and diabetes management.
Avatar n tn The post eating numbers should guide you on adjusting your meals. Typically most people find that eating low carb meals will help in lowering blood sugars. Are you on insulin? IF you are, then it is also important to check before meals to see if you are back to normal numbers, or too low, or too high before you ate. You may also use blood sugar results to gauge the effects / benefits of exercise on your blood sugar levels.
225237 tn?1333138999 There is a book I recommend it is called sugar blockers, you must take care of your self now and try your best. I wish I would have had that advice when I told I was prediabetic. You know there is something you can start taking now to control it. It is called Mulberry leaf vitamin all natural. Also cinnamon, and there are other natural herbs that can help. If you are over weight it is best to get rid of that extra weight.
Avatar n tn Hi there. Beta blockers are known for causing a good lot of side effects. Most of the BP meds have side effects, but its a bit of a price that has to be paid for the benefits of lower HR and lower BP.
976897 tn?1379167602 Those I believe are calcium channel blockers? not beta blockers, they are very different. It has basically been agreed by my regular Doctor and Cardiologist that I do not have spasms, so I was allowed to stop taking those. Calcium channel blockers work in a different way. When arteries want to narrow, they use the layer of muscle along the wall to constrict it. To do this, the muscle obtains calcium from the blood, by drawing it through tiny channels in the artery lining.
865758 tn?1285952904 Hello and welcome!! Beta blockers are used frequently in the treatment of anxiety, especially in people with a concurrent diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse (heart murmur)....or when there are a lot of anxiety-related "cardiac" type symptoms (racing pulse, palpitations). It can also used to help with "stage fright"...or for people who are giving a large presentation, for chronic bothersome facial "blushing" as a result of anxiety etc.
Avatar n tn Has anyone had PAC/PVC that have turned into a more dangerous rythmn. Or do they always stay the same. I have also heard about calcium channel blockers how do they differ from a beta blocker are there more side effects?
Avatar m tn I wouldn't buy into any 'magic cures' like that- it's probably true that there could be benefits to something like that (although off hand, I don't know about this one specifically)- but it's not going to cure medical issues like diabetes. It would be nice if it were true though, wouldn't it?
1124887 tn?1313754891 I should mention that I immediately stopped my low carb diet when the PACs were at the worst. I also tried to take some rapidly acting beta blockers (propranolol) which had always been effective in the past. It didn't help. I keep having this nagging fear that my PACs will return, because 1) I have no idea what really triggered them, and 2) beta blockers did not help.
739294 tn?1235689667 Mine went from 140 to 109 on beta blockers. I ran marathons and other races. I figure meds like this are like oral pacemakers in that they limit heart rate and rhythm so the heart maxs out at a lower level. Right now I am taking a time out from flecainide after two years and see what happens to my exercise numbers. Very few cardiologists are runners, at least the ones I know so when I bring it up to them, all I get is, "Its still a good thing to exercise." I will keep you posted.
Avatar n tn Even for high risk thyroid cancer patients, under .05 TSH is very low. I think your GP was right in changing your dose. It can take up to 6 weeks to feel the effects of the higher dose. If, once your TSH is in the target range (I'm not positive, but I think between .1 and .5) if you still are having a fast resting heart rate, the doctor can put you on a beta blocker. In the 23 years I've been taking Synthroid I've been on beta blockers at various times and it is very helpful.
Avatar m tn I am 76, had only one episode of tachycardia at 74 1/2, was medicated with two beta blockers, weaned off one with no problem, have weight-trained and run (now jog) for 35+ years, have large right atrium, take cozaar with no problems, and accepted the operation for a pacemaker set on at 60 (it was 40 to 50 bpm from years of running) with no problems. I have not had any further problems since the original flutter was easily stopped by cardioversion. Blood pressure is well controlled.
Avatar n tn I was recently put on a beta blocker for my hypertension. I also starting exercising again after 5 years. I am 43 years old with a 4 yr old and a 18 month old. I can't get my heart rate up enough to see any benefits of the exercise after 1 month. I sweat, but I never get to the 'fat burning' level. Do I need an alternative medication? What are my options?
