Common Questions and Answers about Boniva bone metastases

boniva

Avatar f tn I have been on Boniva for bone helath for about two years. I heard yesterday that Boniva would cause eye disorders called uveitis and sleraderma? Does this bone medicine cause eye problems? I have an eye disorder called Fuchs cornea dystrophy and have recently had cataract surgery in both eyes ;however one eye keeps feeling irritated.
1026267 tn?1257591273 Boniva is perscribed both ways and I have neglected to ask the doctor why she perscribed the daily one. When I asked pharacist about the price (last year) it was $200/mo regardless of whether it was taken daily or monthly. Now that I have a different perscription plan, Endo thinks I should check the price again. It isn't just the price that is making me anxious, it is the fact that I wonder if it is a sure preventative.
Avatar f tn I was told that it would worsen after the chemo (carbo/taxoterre), and it did. Not terribly, but a decrease in bone mass just that same. I started on Boniva and my cholesterol shot up about 120 points. I just stopped that recently and my numbers dropped by 80 points. Seems there are downsides for everything. Now taking Viactiv with vitamins D & K, 3 chews a day. Will have another bone density next April. I also am fairly physically active and hope that will help.
Avatar n tn What is the method to look for a bone metastases from breast cancer? I have had awful pain in my right arm/shoulder for 4 months. MRI showed torn biceps tendon and other small bursal tears and tendonitis, and a rotator cuff tear. Would a bone metastases have been revealed on the MRI of my arm and shoulder? Should I ask for a bone scan? I am 57 years old and have been cancer free since a stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis 8 years ago. I am worried that the pain does not go away.
Avatar n tn Adding a moderate amount of calcium, (around 500 to 600 mg of calcium citrate) a day improves bone mineralization. A number of other nutrients also improve bone mineralization, including vitamin K, magnesium, zinc, green tea, and curcumin. Exercise plays a major role as well, especially resistance exercises. It is critical to avoid high protein diets, since proteins increase acid levels in the body, and this demineralizes the bones (causing osteoporosis). Exercise drives calcium into the bone.
Avatar m tn Her primary issue is the loss of bone in her jaw, leaving some teeth loose. But her bone density tests (I think) are fine. One physican gave her Synthroid, another told her to stop. One perscribed Boniva, another said no, cause she is a young lady. Here are her labs. Any comments? Bone Marker Tests: TP1NP: 26.57 (Range: 20.00 to 100.0 ng/ml) Vitamins D: 42.27 (Range: 50.00 to 100.0 nmol/l) Osteocalcin: 19.49 (Range: 11.00 to 43.00 ng/ml) B-CTx: . 265 (Range: ???
Avatar n tn t until April, so there would be enough of a space to be able to start Boniva is the bone doctor thought it was a doable plan. I don't want to be on biophosphates for a long chunk of time because of the side effects long term with them. The hormone therapy is not something that I will even entertain. I have had a hysterectomy and have no ovaries ever since age 37. I was on hormones until age 50.
Avatar f tn The technician looked at my med list and asked if I am taking Boniva and Synthroid. I answered yes. I take other meds other than those two she mentioned. I told her that I understood why she asked about the Boniva but I didn't understand why she asked about Synthroid. She told me that thyroid meds take from the bones and causes osteoporosis. WHAT??? How come no doctor ever told me?
Avatar f tn Are you on any meds for your recently diagnosed condition?
Avatar m tn My husband sadly died of protate cancer with bone metastases this year He went to GP in Feb 2111 with urinary problems At that time he had PSA of 5. and a rectal examination showed slight enlargement He was told he was fine By 2113 after a fall and Xrays showed extensive metastases and PSA of 10.
Avatar f tn Metastases to the opposite breast can be determined by physical examination or by mammography. Liver metastases can be checked by means of a liver ultrasound or CT scan. Brain metastases can likewise be detected by CT scan. Cancer spread to the bones can be seen on whole body bone scan, but this procedure may be dispensed with if your mother does not complain of any bone, hip or low back pain.
Avatar n tn Hello, Prostate cancer is a relatively slow-growing type of cancer. Bone metastases are more common with prostate cancer. Almost 70% of people with advanced prostate cancer have bone metastasis. The involvement of skeletal metastases may indicate poor outcome. If you are doubtful and anxious it is best to discuss your concerns with your doctor. I sincerely hope it helps. Best wishes and kind regards!
Avatar n tn in order to treat osteo you need to be on fosmax/ boniva or like substances and have hrt. your doctor you should sue.... because he perscribed it while having the knowledge of your bone health knowing it decreases the amount of calcium in your bones.
Avatar n tn swings of hashis the elevated thyroid hormones could very well have accelerated the bone loss. Some bone loss is natural as we age. We all cannot maintain the bone density of a medium framed 25 yr old (what they base the test scores on) I just received the results of a recent Dexascan. My hip density actually improved but my lumbar L1-L4 had some minimal loss - go figure! I was happy to see some improvement but also bummed about the lumbar. Drat!
Avatar f tn So if the bone scan is clear, it may be that the 3-4 mm lesions detected on CAT scan are soft tissue metastases adjacent to the bone, but not yet invading the bone itself. If those lesions are accessible, it might be wise to have a biopsy done to confirm that these are indeed cancer metastases, before proceeding with any kind of treatment.
Avatar f tn Early results from this study indicate that Zometa in combination with endocrine therapy (goserelin plus tamoxifen or goserelin plus arimidex) lowers the 5-year risk for breast cancer recurrence by 36% compared to those women who were being given endocrine therapy alone. Zometa apparently not only prevented bone metastases, but metastases to other body parts as well. It also decreased recurrence risk in the unaffected breast.
Avatar f tn Is boniva a possible cause of papilloma virus on the eyelid going into the conjunctiva? This discussion is related to uveitis of the eye caused by Boniva.
Avatar n tn Hi. Has your mom been previously diagnosed with cancer? If not, I just find it hard to believe that a finding of possible liver metastases on CT scan would not prompt her doctors to look for the possible source (the "primary" lesion) of those metastases. If those liver lesions are indeed metastases, her upper back pain could indicate metastatic lesions to the spine as well, which should warrant further investigation (i.e. bone scan).
Avatar n tn Is this a normal prominence of the bone after radical mastectomy or is it some kind of metastases?? Do metastases occur during chemotherapy? cant the drugs penetrate the bone to kill the cancer cells? We havent consulted the oncologist yet but if he suggests us to take a chest x-ray or bone scan, will it be okay to do so when she's on chemo?? Kindly offer your advice sir.
Avatar f tn I noted that for the last several months whenever I took Boniva I had significant swelling under both eyes. Thus, when this past Sunday, 5/23 I developed the papilloma on my left lower eyelid (center) which at first seemed to have a point on top & next day became more elongated I thought Boniva. I would appreciate any feedback as to cause & what possible treatment. It, not very large & seems to be same size this first week.
Avatar n tn Hi. Some doctors order a bone scan as routine part of the staging work-up for breast cancer, while other oncologists prefer to have the bone scan done only if the patient manifests with symptoms (e.g. hip and back pains) which would make one suspect the presence of bone metastases. You can ask your friend's doctor the reasons why he has ordered a scan. I'm sure he'll be more than willing to explain things to you.
Avatar n tn Hi. It would be hard for me to say what those lumps are without actually having seen them, but from your description, they don't seem to me to be bone cancer, whether primary or metastatic. Metastatic bone cancer usually doesn't present as protruding lumps. They're usually seen on x-ray or bone scan as areas of thinned out bone. Primary bone cancer, on the other hand, would have grown considerably over a couple of years and not remain the same size.
Avatar f tn A Lytic Bone Lesion is anything that destroys the bone. These lesions can be benign as well as caused by cancer. A person's age is one clue as to the nature of a lytic lesion. Evidently the Radiologist feels that the lesion discovered on your Mother's Bone Scan is caused by something other than cancer. It's entirely possible that this lesion has been present for some time and has no connection to her breast cancer. You might discuss this is detail with her Oncologist. Regards ....
212161 tn?1599427282 does anyone take Boniva and how bad were the side effects
Avatar n tn They are given generally prescribed orally and include Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva. They can cause some severe stomach distress as they did for my father. When this happens there are injectable forms of bisphosphonates. Ibandronate (Boniva injection) is injected into your vein once every three months, and zoledronic acid (Reclast) is injected once a year. If approved by your physician these treatments do not cause stomach distress and you do not have to remember to take a tablet.
