Boniva and jaw bone loss

Common Questions and Answers about Boniva and jaw bone loss

boniva

Avatar m tn Her primary issue is the loss of bone in her jaw, leaving some teeth loose. But her bone density tests (I think) are fine. One physican gave her Synthroid, another told her to stop. One perscribed Boniva, another said no, cause she is a young lady. Here are her labs. Any comments? Bone Marker Tests: TP1NP: 26.57 (Range: 20.00 to 100.0 ng/ml) Vitamins D: 42.27 (Range: 50.00 to 100.0 nmol/l) Osteocalcin: 19.49 (Range: 11.00 to 43.00 ng/ml) B-CTx: . 265 (Range: ???
Avatar f tn It is recommended to take calcium supp and to do low impact exercises to min bone loss. Foamax comes in syrup which can help you with the gastro problems. However, it can create more facial bone issues. Talk to your docotor-good luck!
1026267 tn?1257591273 I'm glad you've decided to wait. The bisphosphonate drugs (all of them, Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, etc) have black box warnings required by the FDA. The FDA has also recommended that these drugs be taken 5 years or less. (my OBGYN confirmd) After that, they just make the bone hard & brittle. There is concern about osteonecrosis of the jaw (bone death), esphogal cancer , and more recently reports of increased femur fractures in patients taking it long term.
Avatar f tn I heard yesterday that Boniva would cause eye disorders called uveitis and sleraderma? Does this bone medicine cause eye problems? I have an eye disorder called Fuchs cornea dystrophy and have recently had cataract surgery in both eyes ;however one eye keeps feeling irritated.
Avatar f tn I was told that it would worsen after the chemo (carbo/taxoterre), and it did. Not terribly, but a decrease in bone mass just that same. I started on Boniva and my cholesterol shot up about 120 points. I just stopped that recently and my numbers dropped by 80 points. Seems there are downsides for everything. Now taking Viactiv with vitamins D & K, 3 chews a day. Will have another bone density next April. I also am fairly physically active and hope that will help.
Avatar n tn swings of hashis the elevated thyroid hormones could very well have accelerated the bone loss. Some bone loss is natural as we age. We all cannot maintain the bone density of a medium framed 25 yr old (what they base the test scores on) I just received the results of a recent Dexascan. My hip density actually improved but my lumbar L1-L4 had some minimal loss - go figure! I was happy to see some improvement but also bummed about the lumbar. Drat!
Avatar f tn Thyroid hormone does not cause bone loss, it simply increases metabolism and therefore the rate of the current bone formation or loss. Most older women are losing bone due to their combined sex steroid, DHEA, Vitamin D, and growth hormone deficiencies. The solution is not life-long hypothyroidism, but the correction of their other deficiencies". What is DHEA? Thanks!
Avatar f tn I lost 2 teeth over 10 years ago and have heard when teeth are missing the jaw will start to lose bone, does the whole of the upper and lower jaw start to lose bone or just the area were the teeth are missing?
Avatar n tn in order to treat osteo you need to be on fosmax/ boniva or like substances and have hrt. your doctor you should sue.... because he perscribed it while having the knowledge of your bone health knowing it decreases the amount of calcium in your bones.
717272 tn?1277590780 When I looked bone loss up in reference to TX meds I was shocked to see that ribavirin can cause bone loss and that protease inhibitors (took one for 6 mos. of TX) also cause it. Anybody else happen across bone loss after they finished TX? Anyone happen to have a bone density scan before and after TX to compare? My question is "Is it reversible after the meds all finally get out of your system"?
Avatar n tn clinic that apparently specializes in bone disorders such as osteoporosis. I have thought about this long and hard since getting my DEXA result. I've never used any of the biophosphates such as Boniva or Actonel and the reason is my doctor put me directly on to the Prolia as soon as my DEXA went from Osteopenia into Osteoporosis. So, now, I am going to ask if it would be beneficial to do 6 mon. of Boniva and then, resume the Prolia.
Avatar f tn Is there a way to treat bone loss if it is horizontal in nature in the front of the jaw only (specifically between the 2 canines on the lower jaw)? Could bone grafts or distraction osteogenesis work? Or could a fixed bridge on implants work? I saw a procedure called distraction osteogenesis to add height to the jaw and I'm wondering if this could be used to allow room for implants or a bridge. I'm curious to know the treatment options and would like to avoid a denture.
Avatar n tn The biophosphonate drugs have been known to cause osteonecrosis (infection causing loss of bone) of the jaw. A disease you do not want to get. The lecturer said she would never recommend anyone taking them. Having an extraction or even a root canal after taking these drugs can initiate the infection in the bone.
Avatar n tn She says my jaw bone loss is extensive at this point. If I am getting a partial plate that will cover this area, is the graft really necessary? Thank you.
Avatar n tn They are given generally prescribed orally and include Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva. They can cause some severe stomach distress as they did for my father. When this happens there are injectable forms of bisphosphonates. Ibandronate (Boniva injection) is injected into your vein once every three months, and zoledronic acid (Reclast) is injected once a year. If approved by your physician these treatments do not cause stomach distress and you do not have to remember to take a tablet.
Avatar f tn Hi and I can so relate to your doubts on the mentioned medicines, I have given up on taking any of them and least of all any bisphosphonates the side effects are simply terrible specially Boniva, there is a site about these meds and all the posters are those women who have taken them, you can look it up under "Boniva side effects" or http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=21455&name=BONIVA, this is a forum where patients detail the side effects they had.
Avatar m tn What do you mean by shrinking? As in the bone around the teeth is shrinking away and the teeth are getting looser? You should get a dental checkup and find out what's causing the bone loss and to remove the broken tooth which could be a potential abscess site. The continued bone loss is worrisome and can accelerate and be more difficult to keep under control the longer its neglected.
Avatar n tn Please advise how long term use (5 years) of anti-depressants and anti-psychotic meds like venlafaxine, olonzapine, zoloft, and prozac, even high stress, can create gum disease and jaw bone degeneration. Thanks. boxcar.
294425 tn?1288528395 The biggest issue with these meds is you are at risk of dental problem called osteonecrosis of the jaw. It means the jaw bone dies and often starts when you have a dental treatment like an extraction. so you need to be on top of dental things, I go every three months for a cleaning. I think you are also at greater risk from a certain type of broken hip. I took the med for 2 years, which is the sort of benchmark for myeloma treatment.
Avatar n tn Ask you doctor to perform a cephalometric xray, which shows the bone and the soft tissues, and this will show if the implant is sitting too high (the bottom of the implant should be sitting level with the bottom of your chin bone) and if you have any sign of bone erosion below the implant (bone resorption). If the implant appears to be sitting back more than before then this may indicate bone loss in the softer bone in the upper part of the chin.
Avatar f tn also i seem to have multiple clacifications thoughout my body and bone pain lt.wrist and hand especially my knees and legs . my tsh level for the past yr are high and recently vit d deficiant . i take 112mcg of levothyroxine now .what bothers me the most is the bone pain that limits activity and the fatigue i feel at times . in my heart i feel tsh meds have side effects that really need to be addressed ! IS THERE A CORRELATION FOR WE WOMEN REALLY HAVE TO KNOW.
Avatar m tn My first visit the dentist told me I have severe bone loss and they want to remove all my teeth and add bone grafts from a cadaver to my jaw line and fit me with dentures. This is totally shocking, as I have no issues with my teeth at all. She said they should be loose, but I cannot move them by hand. I take Prevacid daily and have heard it contributes to bone loss. Does anyone have information on this, or on alternative treatments - or affordable treatments in other countries.
Avatar f tn I monitor this site for info on my eye condition. I do not know if the papilloma specifically is related, but Boniva and drugs like it can cause swelling around the eyes as you describe. Just read any website discussing adverse effects of Boniva. I think it worth discussing with your doctor. You should be very aware and cautious of any facial swelling while on Boniva.
Avatar f tn I wrote you a long reply, and now when checking back, do not see it here.Did you receive it? If not I will have to write again when I get a chance. We have several things in common. In the meantime, you might want to research " bite collapse" and "collapsed dental arch" I think either thing can happen with the movement of teeth. I am 54 and was recently prescribed Alendronate for osteopenia found on a bone scan.
Avatar n tn Paid $3500, for root canal treatment that seeminly went well but have now had tooth removed due to perforation of jaw bone by post (extensive bone loss). Dentist assured me was not my fault as I did nothing wrong nor did he ??????????
Avatar f tn It is now diminishing in size and I am hopeful it will vanish but I hesitate to continue on Boniva.
Avatar f tn After two more visits to a different dentist, and the loss of my dental insurance, and an xray, they determined the implant was infected in my jaw bone. So they removed it in Nov and here it is Dec and I have now a secondary infection and am on 2nd bout of Amoxillian after Clandamiason. I am at my wits end.
