Common Questions and Answers about Boniva osteonecrosis of the jaw

boniva

Avatar m tn If she has ever taken Boniva, she should worry. Google Osteonecrosis of the jaw, many drugs like Fosomax have bad side effects. A friend lost several teeth and parts of her jaw due to this. She eventually had to have cadaver bone to replace the bone she lost, then implants. She should take other types of calcium supplements.
Avatar n tn ] ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND THE WORK THAT NEEDED TO BE PERFORMED, SO HER DENTISTS HAD TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO DO HER DENTAL WORK. THE DENTIST EXPLAINED THAT THE CONDITION OF HER JAW WAS THE EFFECT OF PROLONGED USE OF FOSAMAX. SHE COULD NOT THOROUGHLY EXPLAIN WHAT WAS GOING ON. CAN YOU GIVE ME A CLEAR EXPLANATION OF HER SITUATION..I AM INTERESTED AS I HAVE BEEN TAKING FOSAMAX FOR MANY YEARS. I DON'T NEED TO HAVE ANY INVASION DENTAL WORK, BUT I'D LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.
Avatar n tn There are reports that link people taking IV fosamx to osteonecrosis of the bone having oral and maxilofacial surgery. Treatment really depends upon degree of severity. Most of the time patients are advised hyperbaric chambers.
Avatar f tn Bisphosphonates like Boniva have been associated rarely with uveitis. You would experience ocular pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, loss of vision and possibly glaucoma if you had uveitis. Your ophthalmologist would be able to tell you right away if you had any uveitis and the Boniva could be discontinued if that were the case.
Avatar f tn Is boniva a possible cause of papilloma virus on the eyelid going into the conjunctiva? This discussion is related to uveitis of the eye caused by Boniva.
Avatar f tn I noted that for the last several months whenever I took Boniva I had significant swelling swelling under both eyes. I wondered if this was due to the salt content of the Boniva, The swelling reduced in 24 hours. This has occured every time I have taken the Boniva, which is once monthly.
Avatar n tn I recommend checking out the website "Save Our Bones". It is an alternative to using bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, et al) These drugs interrupt the remodeling of bones by adding a "sheath" or layer of hardening to the outside of the bones in an effort to prevent bone "loss". Bones remodel (replace) naturally every few years. One of the problems with bones is our diets are often highly acidic by processed foods.
Avatar m tn I had about 9 surgeries where they cut and released my Achilles tendons so I could walk again without the braces they had to make when I got out of the hospital, they had to break and fuse all of my toes straight, etc. I had horrible pain in them and will forever, so my pain doctor that I have had since the coma had decided we were going to do a Spinal Simulator that would numb my legs from mid-calf to the tips of my toes.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and have noticed that recently I have a lot of pain in my teeth and jaw. This has prompted me to wonder if osteoporosis affects the teeth in general as they are inbedded in bone? And how so?
Avatar f tn There definitely is a connection between bisphosphonates like Fosamax and osteonecrosis of the jaws. This has been well established and documented in medical and dental journals. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is the type of doctor that most commonly diagnoses and treats this condition.
Avatar n tn The biophosphonate drugs have been known to cause osteonecrosis (infection causing loss of bone) of the jaw. A disease you do not want to get. The lecturer said she would never recommend anyone taking them. Having an extraction or even a root canal after taking these drugs can initiate the infection in the bone.
Avatar f tn com/arthritis/avascular-necrosis-osteonecrosis-symptoms-treatments#2. And here is an overview of the type of surgery that she had https://nyulangone.org/conditions/osteonecrosis/treatments/joint-preserving-surgery-for-osteonecrosis. I do hope it wasn't useless to have the surgery but I would question that doctor about what is next if they feel that way. There are other treatment options. And it's very important to find the core cause of why it is happening to begin with.
Avatar f tn I had mild osteopenia prior to my OVCA dx in Mar. 2004. I was told that it would worsen after the chemo (carbo/taxoterre), and it did. Not terribly, but a decrease in bone mass just that same. I started on Boniva and my cholesterol shot up about 120 points. I just stopped that recently and my numbers dropped by 80 points. Seems there are downsides for everything. Now taking Viactiv with vitamins D & K, 3 chews a day. Will have another bone density next April.
212161 tn?1599427282 does anyone take Boniva and how bad were the side effects
294425 tn?1288528395 The biggest issue with these meds is you are at risk of dental problem called osteonecrosis of the jaw. It means the jaw bone dies and often starts when you have a dental treatment like an extraction. so you need to be on top of dental things, I go every three months for a cleaning. I think you are also at greater risk from a certain type of broken hip. I took the med for 2 years, which is the sort of benchmark for myeloma treatment.
Avatar m tn hi there, I have ficat stage 2 ON of the femoral head - will buying a TENS / EMS machine such as neurotrac help to arrest the disease?
Avatar n tn My doctor may be thinking of spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee but he does such a poor job of communication with the patient you fee like he is just setting appointment after appointment hopping it gets better. Which I gather is a valid treatment of osteonecrosis. But he needs to communicate more. He may not be thinking anything and is just hoping things will get better. Sorry venting. Thank you for your response It may be correct or not but it is very useful information.
Avatar n tn when I speak to my patients and explain the interconnectivity of the mouth and specifically the lower jaw to the Cervical (neck) spine and the more they ususally have a blank look on their face. The simple answer is that it could be both ways, meaning yes your scoliosis could have effected your jaw position and/or the other way, the jaw position could have caused your scoliosis.. How to treat it.. stay away from surgery. Find yourself a good Chiropractor, and a Neuromuscular dentist.
Avatar f tn I suggest that you take the time to read this article, written by a good thyroid doctor, to send to patients that have been consulting with him from a distance. The letter is sent to the PCP of the patient, to help guide treatment. I think you will find paragraph 4 to be very insightful for you on this subject. http://hormonerestoration.com/files/ThyroidPMD.
1118724 tn?1357010591 t write down the name of the bacteria sooo.. the maker of the pads is Triad. They also make pads under different names, like Topco .. Did anyone else get a similar notice?
Avatar n tn I have had very little problems with Prolia. I've done 4 injections over the past 2 years. Just a little bit of bone pain for the first 2 wks after the injection then, it goes away. That said, unfortunately, for me, my DEXA did not improve and my osteoporosis in my spine (the T-score) did not get better. Now, my doctor is sending me to a 'bone' clinic that apparently specializes in bone disorders such as osteoporosis.
Avatar f tn extremely swollen right leg especially around knee joint - could not even bend knee, terrible hip pain and two days later a tooth abscess. What are the chances I can tolerate Boniva once a month? My Endocrinologist wants me to try it.
Avatar n tn They just removed my submandibular gland last week, along with a lymph node that was piggybacking on it, and a calcified ligament that runs from the back of the right ear to the bottomw of the jaw line. There was not any blockage in the submandibular gland to cause it to enlarge or be painful, to be honest they do not know what they removed. They removed it for two reasons; very painful, and the complex nodule had grown in size. What size is the nodule?
Avatar f tn I think I have avascular necrosis of the jaw. More or less, the jaw is deteriorating. The dental hygienist said she wished she had my bone level in my jaw. Yeah right, what does she know. The xray did not show what the oral surgeon could see when he yanked the wisdom teeth. Have you been or oral biophosphonates? You know, like Boniva? Or corticosteroids? This is a stretch but have you heard of amyloidosis? I am being biopsied on Friday for Amyloid and Sjogrens Syndrome by an ENT at HUP.
Avatar f tn You're in the hyper range. Call your doctor or go to her ASAP and let her know what happened at the pharmacy. My doc gave me a sample of Synthroid to get me through a month until I could get to a pharmacy. Docs usually carry sample packs. From what I've read, consequences vary by person. We are all different, but I don't suggest you take chances.
Avatar n tn because he perscribed it while having the knowledge of your bone health knowing it decreases the amount of calcium in your bones.
