Boniva and bone fractures

Common Questions and Answers about Boniva and bone fractures

boniva

1026267 tn?1257591273 I'm glad you've decided to wait. The bisphosphonate drugs (all of them, Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, etc) have black box warnings required by the FDA. The FDA has also recommended that these drugs be taken 5 years or less. (my OBGYN confirmd) After that, they just make the bone hard & brittle. There is concern about osteonecrosis of the jaw (bone death), esphogal cancer , and more recently reports of increased femur fractures in patients taking it long term.
Avatar n tn Not long ago a report was released about a possible link between these drugs and esophagal cancer - and also femur fractures because long term use of these drugs can actually cause brittle bones. The new recommendation from doctors (including my new primary care) is to not use them more than 5 years. Sorry to throw some scare out there - but I've spent 5 years reading all I can about osteoporosis, and those drugs would be the very last option for me. I stress, for "me".
Avatar f tn I heard yesterday that Boniva would cause eye disorders called uveitis and sleraderma? Does this bone medicine cause eye problems? I have an eye disorder called Fuchs cornea dystrophy and have recently had cataract surgery in both eyes ;however one eye keeps feeling irritated.
Avatar f tn Are you on any meds for your recently diagnosed condition?
Avatar f tn I was told that it would worsen after the chemo (carbo/taxoterre), and it did. Not terribly, but a decrease in bone mass just that same. I started on Boniva and my cholesterol shot up about 120 points. I just stopped that recently and my numbers dropped by 80 points. Seems there are downsides for everything. Now taking Viactiv with vitamins D & K, 3 chews a day. Will have another bone density next April. I also am fairly physically active and hope that will help.
Avatar n tn in order to treat osteo you need to be on fosmax/ boniva or like substances and have hrt. your doctor you should sue.... because he perscribed it while having the knowledge of your bone health knowing it decreases the amount of calcium in your bones.
Avatar n tn clinic that apparently specializes in bone disorders such as osteoporosis. I have thought about this long and hard since getting my DEXA result. I've never used any of the biophosphates such as Boniva or Actonel and the reason is my doctor put me directly on to the Prolia as soon as my DEXA went from Osteopenia into Osteoporosis. So, now, I am going to ask if it would be beneficial to do 6 mon. of Boniva and then, resume the Prolia.
Avatar m tn Her primary issue is the loss of bone in her jaw, leaving some teeth loose. But her bone density tests (I think) are fine. One physican gave her Synthroid, another told her to stop. One perscribed Boniva, another said no, cause she is a young lady. Here are her labs. Any comments? Bone Marker Tests: TP1NP: 26.57 (Range: 20.00 to 100.0 ng/ml) Vitamins D: 42.27 (Range: 50.00 to 100.0 nmol/l) Osteocalcin: 19.49 (Range: 11.00 to 43.00 ng/ml) B-CTx: . 265 (Range: ???
Avatar f tn The technician looked at my med list and asked if I am taking Boniva and Synthroid. I answered yes. I take other meds other than those two she mentioned. I told her that I understood why she asked about the Boniva but I didn't understand why she asked about Synthroid. She told me that thyroid meds take from the bones and causes osteoporosis. WHAT??? How come no doctor ever told me?
Avatar m tn In 2011, the agency voiced concerns that taking the drugs long-term may actually make bones weaker and increase the risk of rare but serious side effects such as atypical fractures of the thigh bone, esophageal cancer and osteonecrosis of the jaw, a rare but painful condition in which the jaw bone crumbles. To investigate, the FDA reviewed data from women who had taken the drugs for six to 10 years.
Avatar f tn Do fractures in bones containing Bone Mets increase the spread of the cancer cells?
Avatar f tn But your question really caught my attention, because I am dealing with the same topic right now, stress fractures, but mine is in the spine. I had a bone density scan done 2 years ago, and it came back with slight osteopenia, not unusual for a woman my age, 2 years post menapausal. After a stress fracture occured 6 weeks ago, another bone density scan was done, and in 2 years it shows just my spine has progressed to osteoporosis.
Avatar f tn also i seem to have multiple clacifications thoughout my body and bone pain lt.wrist and hand especially my knees and legs . my tsh level for the past yr are high and recently vit d deficiant . i take 112mcg of levothyroxine now .what bothers me the most is the bone pain that limits activity and the fatigue i feel at times . in my heart i feel tsh meds have side effects that really need to be addressed ! IS THERE A CORRELATION FOR WE WOMEN REALLY HAVE TO KNOW.
Avatar f tn I have personally evaluated patients for osteoporosis with prior overuse pelvic fractures who ultimately had normal bone density on their DXA scan. Stress fractures themselves are not indicative of osteoporosis. Fragility fractures-- which include a fracture of the hip, pelvis, wrist, spine, or shoulder sustained during a fall from standing height-- are concerning for osteoporosis.
Avatar f tn I monitor this site for info on my eye condition. I do not know if the papilloma specifically is related, but Boniva and drugs like it can cause swelling around the eyes as you describe. Just read any website discussing adverse effects of Boniva. I think it worth discussing with your doctor. You should be very aware and cautious of any facial swelling while on Boniva.
1200310 tn?1265322110 Some times a fracture, hairline or not will not be apparent on an x-ray. However as the bone begins to heal itself calcium is deposited along the fracture line and they are more easily seen. Hope this has been helpful.
Avatar f tn I'll try and condense this as much as possible. Had tib/fib fractures- including malleolar fractures-16 months ago.I had ORIF w/insertion of tibial nail within 48hours. 5months later had bone graft done on my fibula. I have always had pain in my ankle and have some numbness on the dorsom of my foot. Through routine xrays it was noted by a radiologist that I may have signs of AVN of the talus.-CT scan was ordered Talar AVN confirmed.
Avatar f tn My  20 year son has severe chronic bone pain, osteoporosis and has had multiple fractures.  We have also had bone biopsy with showed a mineralization defect(focal osteomalacia) and high turn bone turnover but these do not lend themselves to a diagnosis.  His blood levels of calcium and vit D are normal.  He received a Pamidronate infusion in October 2004 and that is when the pain began.  He was completely debilitated at that time as he is now.
Avatar f tn Fractures are not a common thing to happen with vaginal births. If a women fractures her ribs it would more likely be caused a big increase in pressure or maybe she has some kind of bone problem. The only other kind of fractures that occur are pelvic or tailbone fractures & that is from the baby being large in size or the women is of small stature.
Avatar f tn It is now diminishing in size and I am hopeful it will vanish but I hesitate to continue on Boniva.
Avatar f tn hello doc, i got a fracture of cuboid bone on 28 July. I went to the hospital and they applied a back slab and a POP.. I wants to know approximately in how many months my foot will be alright as it was before?? and in how many months wil i be able to wear my heel shoes??
Avatar f tn The mri showed no issue with ligaments or tendons and confirmed no fractures or growth plate concerns. He has been in an immobilizing walking brace for two weeks now, going on three.....How long does something like this typically take to heal up in a child? There is minor swelling on the outside of the ankle bone and minor tenderness currently.
Avatar f tn ORIF of tibia w/insertion of an IM nail was done within 48 hours. Fibula did not heal so had bone graft and plate put in 5 months after accident. The fractures are now healed but I'm left w/severe pain and 0 dorsiflexion. Radiology reports said I had avascular necrosis of talus (after CT ) Foot/Ankle specialist disagrees. My original Orthopod wants to take hardware out and thinks my pain is RSD.After researching RSD I have a hard time agreeing w/that diagnosis. I am at a loss.
Avatar n tn Autograft is the one where in bone pieces are taken from patient itself. Allograft is the one where in another human bone pieces are taken i.e. from bone bank and synthetic you know is one which is similar material like bone pieces. The optimal bone graft material or bone morphogenic protein is unknown. Factors to consider with the use of autograft include the need for a 2nd incision and the relative quality of the patient's bone.
Avatar f tn My PA who ordered my bone DEXA scan (since I have osteopenia), had ordered it because it had been 2 yrs since my last one. I had it done on Tues. and they called me today saying that my bone density had worsened and now I'm considered advanced osteopenia 'right before osteoporosis'. They want me to come in to talk to her about further treatment, more aggressive treatment'. My husband thinks that since I just had the 3 mon.
Avatar m tn This retrospective study included 127 patients who received a first LT between July 2010 and July 2011. Outcomes measured included re-admission rates, fractures, and functional status post-LT. 25-hydroxyvitamin (OH) D deficiency was stratified as: mild 20-30 ng/mL, moderate 15-19.9 ng/mL, and severe 400,000 IU total) supplementation (P=0.004). We found no association between vitamin D deficiency at LT and functional status, fractures, or readmissions post-LT.
