What blood cholesterol carrier is of greatest concern in atherosclerosis

Common Questions and Answers about What blood cholesterol carrier is of greatest concern in atherosclerosis

blood

Avatar f tn It appears that you may have cardiovascular disease based on the numbers provided. You are at risk for a stoke, heart attack etc. Bad" cholesterol is the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the major cholesterol carrier in the blood. High levels of these LDLs are associated with atherosclerosis.
Avatar f tn During the summer of 1999 I developed Type two diabetes which, in spite of my medical background I failed to recognize. In one year of uncontrolled diabetes I developed major lipid obstructions in three of my coronary arteries, which eventually resulted in coronary by-pass surgery. You asked a number of other questions about diabetes, cholesterol and other subjects that the following website mighthelp with: http://www.healthline.
Avatar f tn However, cholesterol particles can not mix with the blood. They are like drops of oil in a glass of water. To get mixed in the blood, they have to be coated by a layer of protein complex named lipoprotein. As you said, there are two types of lipoprotein: the low density lipoprotein (LDL) and the high density lipoprotein (HDL). The first one moves the cholesterol to the body cells while the second one brings it back to the liver.
Avatar n tn You have to remember though that cholesterol is not the primary stage of atherosclerosis. Cholesterol is used by the body to repair damaged arteries, usually through long term high blood pressure damaging the inner lining. If you are very fit, I would have thought that your arteries would be in great shape and it certainly helps a massive amount if you don't smoke.
Avatar m tn If LDL is kept under 70 (as mine is), is an HDL of 25 a concern? Or is progression of my atherosclerosis more likely at the lower HDL? Three tests showed my HDL in mid to upper 30s from Sept through December, 2012 TG around 110, TC around 120. Two test since then showed a drop in HDL, 29 then 25, and rise in TG, 200 and 150. TC stayed low, under 130. I am looking at my diet for changes to account for this, and the only thing seems to be bread and pasta and potatoes increased recently.
1475202 tn?1536270977 CHOLESTEROL BLOOD TL: 136 mg/dL (<=199) TRIGLYCERIDES BLOOD: 60 mg/dL (=41) LDL CHOLESTEROL CALC: 87 mg/dL (1-129) TC:HDL: 3.7 EKG and Stress Echo NORMAL FINDINGS. Questions: What is your interpretation of these tests and is it fitting to begin treating atherosclerosis with a statin “Lipitor” per the suggestion of my cardiologist. I have expressed my concerns regarding the use of the statin and would like to try diet and exercise first. Does this seem feasible?
Avatar m tn Many factors more important than cholesterol—such as stress, smoking, hypertension, insulin resistance, high triglycerides, diabetes, and low testosterone (in men)—contribute to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.17-19 Despite this, the theory that cholesterol is the dominant villain responsible for atherosclerosis has been promulgated for over 60 years, making the pharmaceutical industry’s anti-cholesterol campaign the most profitable medical myth of all time.
Avatar f tn Most likely your symptoms could be due to injury to a nerve, pressure on spinal/peripheral nerves (neuropathy), vitamin deficiency, lack of blood supply due to cholesterol plaque from atherosclerosis in the extremities, viral infection and use of certain medications. In addition, few diseases like atherosclerosis can also cause pain, numbness, and tingling while walking and they can also reduce blood supply and lead to numbness.
Avatar m tn What are your thoughts with vitamin C deficiency being thought of as a big contributor to atherosclerosis?
Avatar n tn While aortic calcification likely signifies that you have some atherosclerosis in your aorta, you should feel reassured to know that aortic calcification is almost uniformly present in all individuals aged beyond their middle years. Atherosclerosis is an inevitable process of aging, and aortic calcification merely reflects this process. Managing cardiovascular risk factors is the most effective way to reduce the severity or worsening of aortic atherosclerosis.
Avatar f tn it is pretty much the hardening of the arteries. or in this case.. of the aorta.. http://www.mamashealth.com/atherosclerosis.asp at that web site.. it describes atherosclerosis pretty well.. I think that it will probably be able to answer most of your questions.. let me know if this helps!
Avatar f tn I think your symptoms may be due to injury to a nerve, pressure on spinal/peripheral nerves (neuropathy), vitamin deficiency, lack of blood supply due to cholesterol plaque from atherosclerosis in the extremities, viral infection and use of certain medications. In addition, atherosclerosis can also cause pain, numbness, and tingling while walking and they can also reduce blood supply and lead to numbness.
Avatar m tn My triglyerides are 35, LDL 96 and HDL 54 and I am now 44 in age. Diet definitely does reduce Cholesterol. Organic Red rice is suppose to be good for your heart.
Avatar f tn It sounds that your toes numbness symptoms could be due to injury to a nerve, pressure on spinal or peripheral nerves (neuropathy), vitamin deficiency, lack of blood supply due to cholesterol plaque from atherosclerosis in the extremities, viral infection and use of certain medications. In addition, atherosclerosis can also cause pain, numbness, and tingling while walking and they can also reduce blood supply and lead to numbness.
Avatar f tn If it is just once in a while, I would not worry about it. If it is daily and/or lasting all day long I would consult a Neurologist; could POSSIBLY be peripheral neuropathy. Are you parents aware of your problem?
Avatar m tn While I am NOT, repeat NOT an expert i would assume outside of stenting and bypass this is the most advanced form of treatment of corronary artery disease http://my.clevelandclinic.org/heart/disorders/cad/tmr.aspx. It's a procedure known as transmyocardial laser revascurilazation. The procedure sounds pretty innovative but it sounds like a last resort.
Avatar m tn I am a 46 yr old male who has just been diagnosed with atherosclerosis and im terrified of the result of what they find after using the angiography on me . what if they find a bad blockage, does this mean open heart surgery or is it a simple fix. Im just too young to be going through this. Is anyone else out there in this situation and what has been your outcome? thank you for anyresponces.
Avatar n tn A very small percentage of vein grafts may become blocked within the first two weeks after CABG surgery due to blood clotting. Blood clots form in the grafts usually because of small arteries beyond the insertion site of the graft causing sluggish blood run off. Another 10% of vein grafts close off between two weeks and one year after CABG surgery. Use of aspirin to thin the blood has been shown to reduce these later closings by 50%.
Avatar f tn Most likely your symptoms could be due to injury to a nerve after surgery/chemotherapy, pressure on spinal/peripheral nerves (neuropathy), vitamin deficiency, lack of blood supply due to cholesterol plaque from atherosclerosis in the extremities, viral infection and use of certain medications. In addition, atherosclerosis can also cause pain, numbness, and tingling while walking and they can also reduce blood supply and lead to numbness.

Avatar f tn My symptoms are a severe stabbing pain in the right side of my head and now pains on the lower left side of the head. What can this be and what treatment would be best?
Avatar m tn Just adding to above and only because I have the same problem. How can they conclude you have Atherosclerosis when it refers to: "The buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on your artery walls (plaques), which can restrict blood flow." by definition. The only thing they can see with a CT-Scan is what is referred to as "other substances" namely Calcium Phosphate depositions.
