Im getting married by the end of this year and someone advised me to stop donating blood as it can lead to irregular periods and problems in conceiving (this lady had similar problems and was advised by her gyn to stop blood donation). Is ths something which happens to a lot of women?
Hi Bud, and welcome! Sorry to hear that you've had a relapse. From what you've said, it sounds like you're pretty confident donating blood has had at least somewhat of an impact on your symptoms, and I would probably agree. However, there could have been other factors as well, such as the running/exercise. Maybe next time you should try 2 weeks of resting after donating blood, before running.
our system of blood donation isn't perfect but they do do the best testing possible. If everyone who had recently had unprotected sex with a partner who's std status they aren't aware of didn't donate blood, we'd have even less supply than we do now.
if it was a high risk partner who you think could have hepatitis or hiv and it was unprotected sex then avoiding donating for 3 months is a good idea and they do ask questions covering those bases when you donate.
The blood transfusion service tests donors for anemia before each blood donation. This test will exclude a thalassaemia carrier with mild anaemia. If you have anemia, then you cannot donate blood.

A follow-up question from my original post answered by Dr. Hook: I had given a whole blood donation 7 days after a last possible exposure. I didn't have the information at the time that made me worry about getting tested and the service I donated through was able to recall my donation and not give it to someone. I had the PCR DNA test at 28 days, and antibody tests at 55 days, 69 days and 85 days - all negative.
Consequently, air got in the line and they stopped the donation saying that it was now contaminated. I noticed the last time I gave blood that it seemed to take longer for me than for others. (Several people who started their donation after me left before me.) What may cause this? Should I be concerned? Thanks for any insight you can provide!
I have been told to get off Enbrel for needed gallbladder surgery. My problem is that when I get off Enbrel, every joint in my body swells, turns red, hurts unbearably and locks up. I become completely bedridden and cannot get dressed or go to the bathroom without help. My blood tests show that, even with the Enbrel, my c reactives and other immune response numbers are very high. They tell me that they will give me prednisone to help with the reaction.

I have to have a c-section and my husband and I are the same blood type so he did a directed donation on my behalf. So if I need blood I get his. You have to ask the blood lab at the hospital for their suppliers phone number and inquire about it. They need a certain amount of time to test the blood an store it so it usually has to be at least a week ahead if time. Something to think about since you already know you might need a blood transfusion.
Hi. I've had RA for 17 years, on Enbrel for the last 8.5. I never wanted to go on MTX because the side effects scare me, and I enjoy a few drinks with friends. A new doctor has put me on it in conjunction with Enbrel because I have couple joints which have been causing me problems. Otherwise, I've been great on Enbrel. I am now in my 3rd week on MTX, and seveal joints are really flaring. I find this very depressing.
