Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa bipolar

zyprexa

Avatar m tn Zyprexa (olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication. Exactly how it works is not known. It is thought to work by changing the actions of certain chemicals in the brain. Zyprexa is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Zyprexa is sometimes used together with other antipsychotic medications or antidepressants.
Avatar n tn what is Zyprexa commonly used for?and it side effects. How much should be taken?
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed w/ BiPolar ten years ago and have since been taking a small dosage of zyprexa. I'm trying to wean myself off it, but am having sleep withdrawals. Is it wise to completely go off the medication or better to lower the dosage? Currently, I'm taking 5 mg at bedtime. I don't suffer manically or have depressive states anymore. I have tried this for two weeks and have had a few sleepless nights. What should I do?
Avatar m tn I have taken Zyprexa 5mg for the last 11 years. It puts you in a state of moderate depression. I took SAM-e 400mg and went hypomanic I the cut out wheat grains.dairy and sugar from my diet and no depression,no chronic fatige asthma allbut gone, motivation back, productivity restored, food intolerances masquerading as mental illness. 58 years of my life wasted !
Avatar f tn I'm currently taking 5 mg of Zyprexa for over a year now. It really helped mellow me out as I am bipolar 2. I don't have my highs anymore but was severely depressed from Oct to August, when my depression started lifting. I've gained 45lbs on Zyprexa and I'm thinking about switching to something similar without weight gain being a side effect.
Avatar n tn A week ago, my psychiatrist increased my Neurontin and prescribed 5mg Zyprexa at bedtime to help resolve a psychotic episode triggered by (we think) extreme stress. Within two days, my thinking became unusually clear and sharp, but without the racing thoughts, etc., that usually accompany hypomanic/manic episodes. I've also become highly productive and motivated to complete projects that remained unfinished for months (but am not restless or hyperactive).
Avatar f tn Dizziness, btw IS a common side effect of the Zyprexa...you had asked about that previously. As for stopping the Zyprexa, check with your doctor of course, but just stopping should not be a problem at all after only a few days. You shouldn't have any adverse effects stopping it abruptly at this point. Zyprexa takes at least 3-4 weeks to really start doing its thing. Let us know how you're feeling, and again....give your doc a ring....it doesn't hurt to be cautious. Take Care.
Avatar f tn However, anti-depressents especially SSRI's can sometimes worsen depression in people with bipolar. I did not respond to Zyprexa until 7.5 mg. and I believe that might be a subclinical dose but your psychiatrist would understand this in full. Did they ever try more standard mood stabilizers such as lithium, Depakoate or Lamictal and if not did they explain why?
Avatar f tn I HAVE A 10 YEAR OLD SON, HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH POSSIBLE BIPOLAR DISORDER, ADHD AND ODD. HE HAS BEEN GOING TO A PSYCHOLOGIST SINCE HE WAS 3 YEARS OLD AND IS ON A MED NAMED ZYPREXA. MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE TRIED PARENTING CLASSES AND NUMEROUS OTHER TACTICS WHICH DIDN'T WORK. AS HE GETS OLDER, EVERYTIME HE IS TOLD NO ABOUT SOMETHING HE GETS VERY VIOLENT WITH MY HUSBAND AND I. I WANT TO KNOW HOW I SHOULD DISCIPLINE A CHILD THAT GETS THAT ANGRY SO IT DOESN'T GET TO THAT POINT?
Avatar n tn I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder. i take lithium ER 450mg BID, Mirapex 1mg for RLS, and zoloft 100mg to treat depression. I can usually fall asleep, however i wake and stay up for a few hours every night. i have tried benedryl, klonopin, trazadone, serequil, and elavil for relief however every one of these meds has a paradoxical effect on me. Any suggestions?
222267 tn?1253305810 Once I was off that drug, I was just fine. Zyprexa is an anit psycotic... I no longer use Zyprexa, but use Seroquel when I get ill but as soon as I am better I discontinue. I encourage you to look up your meds and be proactive with your healthcare. There is no proof that staying on that anti psycotic long term is of any benefit to you.
Avatar n tn But as I suspected, the Dr. decided it was BiPolar and prescribed Zyprexa. The first night on (1) 2.5mg pill he slept 22 hours. Dr. said this is good. He hasnt shown any improvement yet, but we are hopeful. He "acted up" at school Friday & they wouldnt let him attend the Kindergarten end of the year party. I hope times like this are coming to an end. Thanks for your help.
Avatar f tn I do not think that I am bipolar. Doc said that the panic attacks may be manic symptoms and so she told me to take zyprexa 2.5mg at night, stop the prozac and take 37.5 of effexor until she gets back in town. She told me that she thinks that I am bipolar but I don’t understand why. She said that she thought my panic attacks were manic episodes that manifest as irritability and panic. I don’t get it. I do have ups and downs but just like anyone else I think.
352941 tn?1197499422 Hello, I was diagnosed with Bipolar when I was 15 years old, following a hospital stay for suicidal thoughts. I am 21 now and have taken: Paxil - which worked for about a year, then I became increasingly violent. Seroquel - worked well for the short time that I was on it. Depakote - worked pretty well, but wasn't helping after being on it for about a year. Celexa - made me real dizzy, so my doc took me off.
709415 tn?1229284553 My son was given the diagnosis of bipolar by a psychiatrist on his first visit. He has depression, anxiety, panic attacks and hears auditory voices which want him to hurt himself or others. He has lost the ability to feel the cold and complains of a constant tingling and burning sensation all over. He has been given ct scans, blood tests, etc when at the emergency room or at his pediatrician.
Avatar n tn Have been taking Zyprexa 20/mg once per day and due to cost having to come off of it cold turkey. Feeling very nerourvous and stressed and its only been two days. My doctor is out of the country and will not be here until saturday. Also taking Prozac 40 mg, topamax 200 mg, klonopin 1mg for bipolar disorder. Any suggestions out there?
Avatar m tn I had a drug problem and did not admit to it at time and was put on Anti-Depressants,the SSRIs made me manic and was put on Zyprexa. After years of jail and hospitals and finally getting clean(now almost 6 motnhs) I realized my problem is drugs...not bipolar. I say this because it is hard to diagnose a teen with BiPolar when they are on cocaine,so anyway I am off EVERYTHING now. I have been on a variety of antidepressants, but always stuck with Zyprexa for almost 7 YEARS!
Avatar m tn My son is stopping zyprexa because he said it has never helped his depression. He is on 2.5 mg a day. He went off each pill one week at a time because he gets dangerous withdrawl symptomsms. He is off a pill on friday, saturday and monday. He is still on the 2.5 mg of zyprexa on tuesday, wednesday, thursday and sunday. Which would be the next pill to get off of? The program he is on refuses to take him off the medicine now and he went to the hospital to get off it.
Avatar n tn I was put on Zyprexa for insomnia I was suffering after surgury. The doctor felt it was anthesia induced mania and usually lasts about a year. Its been 2 years now and I have been on Zyprexa for 18 months. Ive been trying to get off this stuff, however before I even get completely off I cant sleep, feel dizzy and have eradicate pulse and blood pressure. I currently have had the medication compounded at 31mg per Ml and I am reducing by one Ml every 2 weeks. Iam currently only taking .62mg.
Avatar n tn But I don't remember it being this strong before. So yeah, I just wondered if Zyprexa was making me more bipolar rather then helping.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with bipolar 2 and BPD. I take Prozac, Zyprexa and Trileptal. I'm wondering if anyone else has had severe break outs because of the medication. I have never had bad acne. Now I have it on my back, face, shoulder, arms and chest. As if I wasn't depressed enough. The weight gain isn't great, either.
Avatar n tn Also, is there any other reason why Risperdal can be better than Zyprexa? (he may have bipolar disorder or may have schizo-affective disorder of bipolar type). Is it possible that some people simply don't respond to a particular medication in the long run, but respond to it in the beginning? Any light on what may be happening, or what we should do will help! Thanks!
Avatar f tn After the third day of being off Zyprexa I experience a buzzing or tingling in my frontal lobes. But I can't sleep without it. Is this dangerous? I am bipolar with chronic thyroidytis.
Avatar f tn I've been on Zyprexa for over a year now. I don't have bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, but I do have very subtle manic-depression. Yesterday I smoked weed after a very long time - the first time I'd ever smoked since I got on the Zyprexa. It was a good trip, and for once I wasn't paranoid or anything of the sort. It was actually really enjoyable.
Avatar m tn Can anyone give me some info. on zyprexa? Has anyone been given this to help stabalize their mood, during withdrawal? If so, please share with me if you benefited from this, and is this addictive as well?
