Avatar f tn I was thinking about trying st. John's wort for depression. I take tramadol for a knee alignment issue. I currently take 100mg-200mg about 3 times a week. I know there is an interaction with st. John's wort due to the seratonin increase they both cause. Am I able to take the st. John's wort on days I don't need the tramadol? If not, how long should I wait to take the St. John's wort after taking the tramadol and when would I be able to take the st.
6861995 tn?1385501475 Buspirone is a very strange medication -- it hasn't done particularly well in studies and it's been around a long time, but some people find it effective. St. John's Wort is used for depression and nobody really knows why it works when it works -- theories have differed as to which neurotransmitters are affected. Generally it is not advised to take St. John's Wort with serotonin targeting drugs, as it might affect serotonin, and buspirone does have an effect on serotonin.
Avatar n tn This is one of the most common physiological components of anxiety, but that doesn't mean that's always the cause. But it often is, especially when combined with something like alcohol consumption. Did you stop the St. John's Wort, and if so, did that bring any improvement?
Avatar n tn St. Johns wort is usually very mild, but maybe you just had an allergec reaction to the herb. I would find it almost impossible for anyone that was only taking St John's wort to develope Serotonin Syndrome. Now if one was combining St Johns Wors with an SSRI medication then, yes there is a risk of Serotonin syndrome. This is why the Wort must never be taken in tandem with any prescribed antidepressant drug.
Avatar f tn Has anyone taken St John's wort to treat depression? Does it work? I'm considering taking it, but I'm not sure of how effective it is... I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Are you on medication? There's no problem with St. John's Wort and evening primrose, but there might be a problem with medication and St. John's Wort. Evening primrose should be taken with meals that contain some fat, as it is mostly fats. And yes, you can also take Omega 3 oils. Evening primrose primarily contains omega 6 oils. As for dosing herbs, which would include St.
782550 tn?1333484257 I am traveling to Ghana on monday and have to take Malarone to prevent malaria. I have some anxiety problems, but not currently insured so i was wondering is it safe to take St John's wort with the malarone? Or is there a different supplement for anxiety that may work with malarone.
Avatar m tn What is everyones thoughts on St John's Wort? Does it really work? I know that it takes about 2 mos to feel the efects of it.
Avatar f tn I never tried it but the results are scientifically valid. It is not fully understood how it is acting but it is very likely that it is affecting you serotonin reuptake (along with more complex phytochemical reactions) just like another SSRI like Prozac. I mean, we didn't invent chemistry and nature do have a lot to teach us and it taught us. ''An analysis of twenty-nine clinical trials with more than five thousand patients was conducted by Cochrane Collaboration.
Avatar f tn Unless you're talking vitamins, St. John's Wort, or the like, there is technically on OTC medication for depression, just supplement-type things. If you take St. John's Wort, however, do check with your healthcare professional. It interacts with A LOT of medication, so you want to make sure it's safe before you take it.
4380186 tn?1355930258 From what I know, St Johns Wort can help some people with mild depression. I think it's best to talk about this with your Dr if you're wanting to get off of your meds. You may need to taper and your Dr can help with the tapering schedule.
Avatar m tn I'm 3 years post OC Stage 3C treatment (surgery/18 weeks dose dense chemo) and my CA125 is rising (consistently over past year, small increments), just now hitting 47 (was 2056 at diagnosis, nadir of 10 after surgery/treatment). My CA 19-9 is also high at 89. Recent CT shows small spot on liver - but nothing conclusive so I'm on Watch and Wait (purgatory for cancer patients).
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about natural remedies such as St. John's Wort, Fish Oil, and other things which have been said to help with depression. See how he views the idea of tapering off your meds and maybe keeping the anti-anxiety meds around just in case if you promise to make your regular appointments.
Avatar f tn My psychiatrist just prescribed Lemectal to me for major depression. She chose this med because I have experienced debilitating side effects with most SSRI and SSNI meds, and she said Lemectal has few reported side effects. I have taken St. John's Wort for 18 years to treat my chronic, low-grade depression, and when I stop taking it, I slide into a real funk and become easily angered and irritated by ordinary situations.
Avatar f tn Actually, the above statement is partly correct and partly incorrect. First, St. John's Wort isn't an OTC med -- that's something like aspirin or Robutussin. St. John's Wort isn't a med, it's a plant, one that comes in many forms such as tinctures, capsules, teas, standardized extracts, etc..
Avatar m tn I haven't seen the research, but neither of these are primarily anti-viral so I'd doubt they would work. I repeat, I haven't seen the research. But when I was in the natural medicine biz managing health food stores, my training from herbalists, nor the herbals I've owned, did not use either of these as anti-virals. Astragalus is primarily used for boosting the immune system and Pao D'Arco as an anti-fungal, particularly against candida albicans.
Avatar n tn You'd have to taper slowly off the Celexa first, as St. John's Wort shouldn't be used along with an ssri. And as with medication, nobody can tell you if St. John's Wort will work or not. It also doesn't really address anxiety unless the anxiety is caused by the depression. What you would want to do is combine the St. John's Wort with 5htp and other remedies.
1243620 tn?1274790697 Who has tried St. John's Wort? Did it work for you? Were there side effects? How long did it take to take effect?
